Book excerpt: We report on the measurement of top production and decay properties obtained by the CDF experiment with[ital p[anti p]] collisions at[radical][ital s]= 1.8 TeV. the analyses presented here refer to[integral][ital Ldt][approx] 110[ital pb][sup -1] collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. About 85% of the possible[ital t[anti t]] decays have been studied in different channels according to the number of high-[ital p[sub T]] leptons found in the final state. Combining the results from the channels with at least one[ital W] decaying leptonically into an[ital e] or[mu] we measure[delta][sub[ital t[anti t]]]= 7.5[sup+1.9][sub -1.6][ital pb]. We report also on the observation of[ital t[anti t]] production in all of the hadronic decay channels using kinematic selection and[ital b] identification, and in the channel containing one hadronically decaying[tau] lepton. Finally we discuss the kinematics of top events and measure the matrix element[vert-bar]V[sub[ital tb]][vert-bar]= 1.12[+-] 0.12.

The production and decay properties of the top quark are being examined in most of the t {anti t} decay channels, and many of these results have recently been published. The study of the top quark has moved beyond measurements of its mass and production cross section, to detailed studies of W polarization in top decays, single top production, branching fractions, the W - t - b coupling, and search for rare decays.

A certain visitor to the area (Hurricane Bertha) arrived unexpectedly early in 1996. It was the first hur ricane in memory to menace the Caribbean in early July! Fortunately, it passed St. Croix several days before our meeting, and left very little damage. (The Altar ellis survived the eye of the storm in the in the British West Islands!) The meeting was held once again at the hotel on the Cay, on that spec of land in the harbor ofChrirtiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. After the first two days of, at times, outrageous downpour, the 71 participants from 26 coun tries began to relax and enjoy the lectures and the lovely surroundings of the In stitute. The primary support for the meeting was provided by the ~cientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. department of Energy, by the Fermi National Accelera tor Laboratory (Fermi-lab), by the U. S. National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. In addition, the International Science Foundation con tributed to the support of a participant from Russia. As in the case of the previous ASIs, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent Ph. D. recipients in experimental parti cle physics.

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a variety of recent results on heavy quark production and decay. Considerable progress has been made by CDF and D0 in measuring top quark production and decay properties. The top quark mass been measured with an uncertainty that is less than 3%, a relative precision that is better than has been achieved for other quarks. Measurements of the top production and decay properties are consistent with the Standard Model predictions, but are generally limited in precision by the small number of top quark events in the present data samples. ALEPH and CLEO have measured the branching ratio for the flavor changing neutral current decay b→s[gamma] and find good agreement with the standard model. Measurements of B-quark production cross sections in p{anti p} collisions by CDF and D0 and in ep collisions by H1 continue to show discrepancies between theory and experiment. CDF and DELPHI have measured the b-quark fragmentation fractions with better accuracy than previous measurements. Finally, measurements of charmonium production by D0, E771, and L3 are consistent with predictions of the color octet model.

S. Virgin Islands. This time, the ASI brought together a total of 73 participants, from 21 countries. The primary support for the meeting was provided, as usual, by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), by the U. S. National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. In addition, the International Science Foundation contributed very generously to the support of a participant from Russia. As in the case of the previous ASls, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures, although, unfortunately, short of three contributions, should complement the material published in the first seven ASIs, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting.

Book excerpt: The authors report preliminary results on top quark decays and measurements of the top mass recently obtained by the CDF collaboration, using a data sample of about 110 pb[sup[minus]1] collected at the Tevatron collider. Upper limits for non Standard model top decays into W+ q (non b quark), Z+ q and[gamma]+ q are given. Top mass measurements are obtained in three topologies for t[anti t] production and decay into W b: lepton+[ge] 4 jets, di-lepton and all hadronic final states. The most precise measurement is obtained in the lepton+[ge] 4 jets topology using 34 events which have at least one jet tagged by the SVX or SLT b-tagging algorithms and a good constrained kinematics fit.
