Book excerpt: Although soil vapor extraction (SVE) is well established as an effective method of removing volatile organic compounds from soil, the spatial extent of extraction influence is often poorly understood. Typically, the limit of a detectable vacuum response in vadose monitoring wells is used to define radius of influence without regard for the pneumatic conductivity, vacuum measurement limitations, or barometric pressure effects. Vapor flow conditions are often assumed to be confined, but even beneath surface pavement or clay layers, vertical leakance of air is usually a dominant influence.

Book excerpt: Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is a proven tecnnology that can remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the subsurface effectively if the conditions are favorable. However, most systems are designed by empirical methods or engineering judgement based on results of pilot tests. An attempt is made to develop a mathematical model for the technology so that optimal operating parameters can be obtained. The pressure distributions induced by multiple-well extractions are obtained by superimposing an existing analytical solution. Concentrations of VOCs as a function of time and space are obtained by numerical simulation of the migration and fate of VOC. The effectiveness of SVE systems using different operating parameters is evaluated on the basis of the quantity of contaminant removed. The developed mathematical model provides the necessary engineering design tools to evaluate different operation scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely used techniques for treating soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds, soil vapor extraction (SVE) can also be applied to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) if the soil is heated, by applying electromagnetic energy in the radio frequency (FR) range, to increase the vapor pressure of the contaminants. Although RF-SVE systems used in previous field demonstrations have had varying degrees of success, questions remain concerning its viability and cost-effectiveness. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration covers detailed scientific and engineering information that answers these questions. The book includes the necessary databases, equations, and example calculations for RF heating. The theoretical and practical information included will facilitate future testing of RF-SVE treatment of soils. Additionally, the book provides information for a full-scale engineering design of potential RF-SVE applications. The authors use this information to examine predicted performance, magnitude of costs, and modifications to the design that may decrease cost. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration gives an economic analysis of this innovative technology and considers other possible applications for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil vapor extraction (SVE) and bioventing (BV) are proven strategies for remediation of unsaturated zone soils. Mathematical models are powerful tools that can be used to integrate and quantify the interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring in field scale SVE/VB systems. This report describes the conceptual and mathematical formulation, numerical implementation, and application of a multiphase, multicomponent, biodegradation model designed to simulate physical, chemical, and biological interactions occurring in field scale SVE and BV systems. The model, the Michigan Soil Vapor Extraction Remediation Model (MISER), is two-dimensional and may be run in a cross-sectional or axisymmetric mode. Phase and constituent mass balance equations are discretized with a standard Galerkin finite element approach using linear triangular elements. A modular, set-iterative solution algorithm is employed. Features of the model include: the ability to simulate multiphase gas and aqueous fluid flow; the simulation of multicomponent transport processes, incorporation of rate-limited interphase mass transfer for volatilization and dissolution of an entrapped organic liquid, volatilization and sorption of aqueous phase constituents, and biophase update; and the simulation of multicomponent biodegradation kinetics and microbial population dynamics. A complete description of the computer code, implementation procedures, and example SVE and BV simulations is included.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.
