Book excerpt: Don't limit your fiction - LIBERATE IT All too often, following the "rules" of writing can constrict rather than inspire you. With Story Trumps Structure, you can shed those rules - about three-act structure, rising action, outlining, and more - to craft your most powerful, emotional, and gripping stories. Award-winning novelist Steven James explains how to trust the narrative process to make your story believable, compelling, and engaging, and debunks the common myths that hold writers back from creating their best work. • Ditch your outline and learn to write organically. • Set up promises for readers - and deliver on them. • Discover how to craft a satisfying climax. • Master the subtleties of characterization. • Add mind-blowing twists to your fiction. When you focus on what lies at the heart of story - tension, desire, crisis, escalation, struggle, discovery - rather than plot templates and formulas, you'll begin to break out of the box and write fiction that resonates with your readers. Story Trumps Structure will transform the way you think about stories and the way you write them, forever.

Consumers remain easily overwrought by complex buying situations that involve buying complex products or services, such as laptops or insurances. In such situations, consumers find it difficult to make a decision and must spend high levels of cognitive effort on it. Prior consumer research has addressed the complexity of buying situations in several research streams such as in choice complexity or product complexity literature. However, previous researchers have not reached consensus on what constitutes the complexity of a buying situation. Furthermore, they have mostly concentrated on cognitive constructs and emotional constructs have been rather unexplored. To close these research gaps, this dissertation provides an in-depth conceptualization of complex buying situations by developing a comprehensive reference framework. Furthermore, this dissertation differs from prior research by examining in detail negative emotional responses to complexity (NERCO). A reliable and valid NERCO scale is developed that consists of two factors, emotional resignation and fear of post-purchase dissonance. An experiment investigates the influence of two input variables of the reference framework (1. the number of alternatives in the consumer’s price class and 2. the perceived expertise of the salesperson who provides a recommendation in a buying situation) on perceived choice complexity and on NERCO. This dissertation paves the way for numerous directions for future research on the complexity of buying situations by providing theoretical fundamentals in the form of a detailed conceptualization and by precisely defining the research gaps.

Book excerpt: Certain things should never be known about one’s best friend. How they rate as a kisser is at the top of the list. Turning thirty wouldn’t be a big deal if Aleen hadn’t been given bad news about her future fertility potential. Now the clock is ticking and she needs to find a man who can not only get her body and heart buzzing, but who is also husband and father material. She hasn’t had a date in years, but finding a man shouldn’t be so hard to do in this age of internet dating, right? Finding an adequate man in thirty days is a challenge she has no choice but to accept. Luke tried the relationship thing for the sake of his dying mother. It didn’t work out. When his best friend, Aleen, starts searching for love in all the wrong places, he offers to step up to the plate. What the heck—they already love each other, why not commit to being more than friends? Her response? Laughter. She doesn’t believe he’s capable of deviating from his quest for the next bright and shiny thing in life, and thus would not make a good life partner. But after a staged kiss in the bar, she’s the only woman he can think about. And he wants to get to know parts of her he hasn’t yet known. Aleen is trying to hunt down a man. Luke is chasing after her. With their emotional wires crossed and burning, does their friendship stand a chance of survival?

She was so bitter that it had destroyed her whole life. She could not find no peace. Her anger and hurt destroyed her life. She almost destroyed Elijah, but his dad showered him with the one thing that heals love. Watching the pain his mother experienced, Elijah vowed to stay with the mother of his child, but things don't always work out the way we want them to. Elijah found out that things can get complicated, and he had to settle for being a good father and to make sure that he stayed in his child's life. Meanwhile, Elijah meets the love of his life--a woman that takes his breath away--but she introduced him to God. He finds peace, contentment, and, most of all, love. Finally, he thinks that everything will be all right, but she has three children. One who has been badly wounded which makes the situation complicated. She wants her dad back at all costs. She never healed from her parents' divorce, and she only wanted her original family together. Her mother is so in love with Elijah, but she is concerned for her children. It's hard for Mom; she found real love but it's complicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the new knowledge economy, traditional modes of thinking are no longer effective. Compartmentalizing problems and solutions and assuming everything can be solved with the right formula can no longer keep pace with the radical changes occurring daily in the modern business world. It’s Not Complicated offers a paradigm shift for business professionals looking for simplified solutions to complex problems. In his straightforward and highly engaging style, Rick Nason introduces the principles of “complexity thinking” which empower managers to understand, correlate, and explain a diverse range of business phenomena. For example, why some new products go viral while others remain unnoticed, how office cliques develop despite collaborative work policies and spaces, how economic bubbles form, and how an unknown retiree foiled one of the most carefully planned product launches ever with a single letter to the editor of his local newspaper. Rather than consider complicated and complex as interchangeable terms, Rick Nason explains what complexity is, how it arises, and the errors in solving complex situations with complicated thinking. It’s Not Complicated provides managers with fresh, counterintuitive, and actionable models for dealing with challenging business problems.

Many people dream of living simple lives on small islands, but few are aware of some of the unique challenges that accompany this distinctive lifestyle. From negotiating surrounding waters to creating a sustainable home and making a viable life away from urban conveniences, small-island living can be rewarding or difficult (or both), depending on myriad circumstances. Complicated Simplicity: Island Life in the Pacific Northwest draws on a variety sources to contextualize peoples' enduring fascination with islands worldwide, including the author's own experiences growing up on Bath Island (off Gabriola) and her interviews with over twenty intrepid figures who live on the San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands, the Discovery Islands, and in Clayoquot Sound. Ingenuity, tenacity, and a passion for living in these special places shine through in the personal stories, as does a shared concern for safety, sustainability, and thoughtful stewardship. Engaging, inspiring, and often funny, Complicated Simplicity offers readers honest and useful insights on the joys, perils, and rewards of island life.

Book excerpt: A “provocative and seductive debut” of desire and doubleness that follows the life of a young Palestinian American woman caught between cultural, religious, and sexual identities as she endeavors to lead an authentic life (O, The Oprah Magazine). On a hot day in Bethlehem, a 12–year–old Palestinian–American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother’s response only intensifies a sense of shame: “You exist too much,” she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East—from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine—Zaina Arafat’s debut novel traces her protagonist’s progress from blushing teen to sought–after DJ and aspiring writer. In Brooklyn, she moves into an apartment with her first serious girlfriend and tries to content herself with their comfortable relationship. But soon her longings, so closely hidden during her teenage years, explode out into reckless romantic encounters and obsessions with other people. Her desire to thwart her own destructive impulses will eventually lead her to The Ledge, an unconventional treatment center that identifies her affliction as “love addiction.” In this strange, enclosed society she will start to consider the unnerving similarities between her own internal traumas and divisions and those of the places that have formed her. Opening up the fantasies and desires of one young woman caught between cultural, religious, and sexual identities, You Exist Too Much is a captivating story charting two of our most intense longings—for love, and a place to call home.

Book excerpt: USA TODAY bestselling author Trish Morey brings readers a multi-generational, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy about second chances, the importance of family, and later-in-life romance. Maggie Halloran’s life is finally perfect. For recently retired Maggie Halloran, life in her renovated two-bedroom St. Ives fisherman’s cottage is picture perfect. With her daughter in London and her mother in Penzance, Maggie is free to enjoy the odd sleepover with her boyfriend, Nigel, visit galleries, or do her beloved sudoku. When Maggie’s reserved mother falls giddily in love, Maggie takes it in stride. At the wedding, Maggie’s daughter, Alice, announces she’s pregnant and needs somewhere to live. Oh, and she has a new puppy, too… Alice and Maggie have never been close, and Nigel’s allergic to dogs, but blood is thicker than your average Saturday night sleepover. Suddenly Maggie’s humouring her demanding daughter, fielding visits from her nostalgic ex-husband, and accommodating Alice’s baby daddy. And then Maggie’s mother arrives on the doorstep in tears, suitcase in hand, because she’s left her new husband. The only one keeping Maggie sane is Mitch, the builder converting the loft into another bedroom. Maggie’s three-level terrace is now home to three generations—soon to be four—and her perfectly quiet, drama-free life is gone. The question is…does she want it back?

Will adolescence allow her to stay in a relationship with a possessive guy for a long time? Will she find someone better? Or will she keep tolerating everything because she thinks that what they have is love? Everybody has a different idea about love, and most of the time it is not what you think it to be. Infatuations, attractions and a lot more can be considered love, but these ideas change over time. Priorities change over time. Life has to be taken seriously and life teaches you that at some point through various incidents. That is when you realize and you change. The people in your life play an important role as well. It doesn’t always turn out the same way for everyone. It has a different route and a different pace for everyone. This book is about the route that Alina’s life follows, about the role of her dear ones in this path, about the changes that are incurred in her life and the things that she learns out of them.
