Book excerpt: ''This exhibition includes works placed directly on the floor, suspended from the ceiling or applied to the windows or walls of the gallery. In her catalogue essay, Laura Richard Janku compares Feher's sculptural practices to the improvisational virtuosity of Ella Fitzgerald, "Like the legendary scatters, Tony Feher intuitively uses familiar pattern, variation, allusion, and quotation to produce transcendent artworks that are anchored formally, but soar with innovation, personality, humor, and catharsis."--

Book excerpt: A cornucopia of rarely seen drawings, full of delicacy and wit, from the acclaimed sculptor American artist Tony Feher (1956-2016) was best known for his sculptures and site-determined installations made of ubiquitous, everyday objects such as plastic bottles, glass jars, marbles, twine, cardboard boxes and other mass-produced items. It is less well known was that he was also a prolific draftsman who drew incessantly throughout his career. At the time of his death in 2016, Feher had assembled an archive of nearly 1,000 drawings--on napkins, discarded correspondence, restaurant menus, lined paper--which are now in the collection of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. In hasty arrays of image and text, these drawings reflect the same singular wit and aesthetic sensitivity that underpinned all his work. This monograph presents for the first time a selection of Feher's drawings: full of jokes, poems, schematic illustrations and the repeated images (such as a jug of water hung on cord) that would later populate his sculptural installations.

Book excerpt: A book of dualities, probing the small spaces between lucidity and madness, desire and ambivalence, the living and the absent. Both an evocation of her love for her husband David Foster Wallace and an act of defiance in the face of devastating loss, Bough Down is a lapidary, keenly observed and composed work, awash with the honesty of an open heart.

Book excerpt: Few Americans are aware that Washington is the country’s largest single patron of art. Every year a group of unelected federal bureaucrats and congressmen spends millions of taxpayer dollars on monuments, sculptures, buildings, plays, and exhibitions, largely without public knowledge or involvement. Frank Gehry’s outlandish memorial to President Eisenhower, an installation that blinks quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt in Morse code at a cash-strapped Veterans Administration hospital, a giant $750,00 wood sculpture whose fumes sickened workers in an FBI building in Miami, FL, and funding for research on the visual cultures of tea consumption in Imperial India are just a few of the hundreds of unwanted and wasteful projects supported annually by the General Services Administration, the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities, and their enablers on Capitol Hill. In this book, Bruce Cole, the longest serving chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, exposes the programs and policies responsible for this glut of unsupervised bureaucratic pork and offers suggestions for their reform or elimination.

Book excerpt: With references to the Bible and 17th-century Dutch still-life painting, Vanitas links the works of fourteen contemporary artists to the age-old theme of life's transience. At the same time, it presents these artists in their 20th-century context while exploring the related themes of beauty and death, pleasure and fear, love and loss. The book focuses on contemporary sculpture and installation art using non-traditional forms, materials, and processes. The artists included--from Warsaw, Paris, New York, London, Sao Paulo--are Miroslaw Balka, Chris Boltanski, Willie Cole, Leonardo Drew, Tony Feher, Robert Gober, Felix Gonzalez, Mona Hatoum, Jim Hodges, Anish Kapoor, Jac Lairner, Zoe Leonard, Gabriel Orozco, Rachel Whiteread, and Yukinori Yanagi.
