Book excerpt: Available again in time for election season, Eleanor Roosevelt's most important book—a battle cry for civil rights As relevant and influential now as it was when first published in 1963, Tomorrow Is Now is Eleanor Roosevelt's manifesto and her final effort to move America toward the community she hoped it would become. In bold, blunt prose, one of the greatest First Ladies of American history traces her country's struggle to embrace democracy and presents her declaration against fear, timidity, complacency, and national arrogance. An open, unrestrained look into her mind and heart as well as a clarion call to action, Tomorrow Is Now is the work Eleanor Roosevelt willed herself to stay alive to finish writing. For this edition, former U.S. President Bill Clinton contributes a new foreword and Roosevelt historian Allida Black provides an authoritative introduction focusing on Eleanor Roosevelt’s diplomatic career. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Book excerpt: In today's interconnected world, most people have acquired knowledge of producing the best result but are still stuck in the how do I start phase. You don't want your big dreams, if you have one, and plans fade away like it never existed just because you don't have the resources. This book will do justice to that in a very simplified way such that by the time you are reading the last chapter, you have already started. The subtitle of this book is "Start Now". That's because I believe that achieving any height of success or milestone can only be possible if, against all odds, you started. You will remember back in school when our instructors ask us questions and we are supposed to answer, maybe after someone has answered it, but we are like, "that is what I wanted to say". Funny memory, right? The truth is, the world will recognize who does it first, not who has it in mind first.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have read before. "Delightful and absorbing." —The New York Times • "Utterly brilliant." —John Green One of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century • One of the Best Books of the Year: The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, TIME, GoodReads, Oprah Daily From the best-selling author of The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women who shaped our world—in their own words. The Wisdom Library invites you on a journey through the lives and works of the world’s greatest thinkers and leaders. Compiled by scholars, this series presents excerpts from the most important and revealing writings of the most remarkable minds of all time. THE WISDOM OF ELEANOR ROOSEVELT “We must join in an effort to use all knowledge for the good of all human beings. When we do that we shall have nothing to fear.” John F. Kennedy described Eleanor Roosevelt as “one of the great ladies in the history of this country.” A role model for generations of women, Mrs. Roosevelt made an indelible mark as First Lady. Although painfully shy, she never hesitated to publicly champion the poor, minorities, women and other victims of discrimination. She was among the twentieth century’s most active civil rights pioneers, compelling her husband to sign a series of Executive Orders barring discrimination in the administration of various New Deal projects, and supporting desegregation of the armed forces. Her groundbreaking column, “My Day,” ran in national newspapers for twenty-six years. During her tenure as U.S. delegate to the United Nations, she was the principal author of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also maintained close friendships and correspondences with notable statespeople, including her husband’s successor, Harry S. Truman, who declared her “First Lady of the World.” With revealing excerpts from her letters and published work, The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt delves into the passions and concerns that drove this exceptional humanitarian. Here is a fascinating and essential tribute to a woman ahead of her time, whose actions truly conveyed her words, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Book excerpt: Written in narrative form, tells the Kingston Woman's History Club's story through the eyes of four generations of altruistic women who weathered war, fire, financial obstacles, and even General Sherman's occupation. In 1861, an unspoken vow to make tomorrow better than today catapulted a group of Kingston, Georgia women to achieve several historical "firsts." They established the Confederacy's first hospital and held the South's first Confederate Memorial Day. Today, the group, known as the Kingston Woman's History Club, continues the Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies honoring both Union and Confederate dead. Their ceremony is credited with being the longest running of its type in the United States. Loyal to their mission of service, the ladies have served soldiers in every American war since 1861. During peacetime, they turned to community service and became the second chartered women's club in the state. They named the state's flower and established the town's park that is home to the club's two-building museum complex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-nineteenth century through at least the first half of the twentieth, the southern code of appropriate feminine behavior required that women depend on sources outside themselves for sustenance, direction, and expression. The chivalric ideal that placed the southern lady on a pedestal often created within her gracious and gentle exterior a turmoil of frustration, confusion, and resentment. This concept of upper middle-class, white southern womanhood forms an important part of the imaginative expression of the southern women writers whose works and lives form the subject matter of this book. All seven—Augusta Jane Evans, Grace King, Kate Chopin, Mary Johnston, Ellen Glasgow, Frances Newman, and Margaret Mitchell—were themselves products of this genteel tradition. Anne Goodwyn Jones explains that her aim is not to link biography and art but to seek, in the lives and works of these seven southern women writers, common patterns that can lead to ways to discern the mind of the southern lady. Tomorrow Is Another Day shows that, by writing themselves and their characters into being, by expressing their voices—however variant in tone—“these seven writers wrote themselves into another day.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, the term 'medieval philosophy' conjures up the figure of Thomas Aquinas, and is closely intertwined with religion. In this Very Short Introduction John Marenbon shows how medieval philosophy had a far broader reach than the thirteenth and fourteenth-century universities of Christian Europe, and is instead one of the most exciting and diversified periods in the history of thought. Introducing the coexisting strands of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish philosophy, Marenbon shows how these traditions all go back to the Platonic schools of late antiquity and explains the complex ways in which they are interlinked. Providing an overview of some of the main thinkers, such as Boethius, Abelard, al-F?r?b?, Avicenna, Maimonides, and Gersonides, and the topics, institutions and literary forms of medieval philosophy, he discusses in detail some of the key issues in medieval thought: universals; mind, body and mortality; foreknowledge and freedom; society and the best life. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not very surprising that it was no less true in antiquity than it is today that adult human beings are held to be responsible for most of their actions. Indeed, virtually all cultures in all historical periods seem to have had some conception of human agency which, in the absence of certain responsibility-defeating conditions, entails such responsibility. Few philosophers have had the temerity to maintain that this entailment is trivial because such responsibility-defeating conditions are always present. Another not very surprising fact is that ancient thinkers tended to ascribe integrality to "what is" (to on). That is, they typically regarded "what is" as a cosmos or whole with distinguishable parts that fit together in some coherent or cohesive manner, rather than either as a "unity" with no parts or as a collection containing members (ta onta or "things that are") standing in no "natural" relations to one another. 1 The philoso phical problem of determinism and responsibility may, I think, best be characterized as follows: it is the problem of preserving the phenomenon of human agency (which would seem to require a certain separateness of individual human beings from the rest of the cosmos) when one sets about the philosophical or scientific task of explaining the integrality of "what is" by means of the development of a theory of causation or explanation ( concepts that came to be lumped together by the Greeks under the term "aitia") .

Book excerpt: Tomorrow is Another Life is a thrilling, satirical adventure story, which takes you into an African wonderland called Mutabe where nothing makes sense and the truth reinvents itself daily, if not more often. Leon, a 30 year old Mutabese refrigeration engineer, was brought to the UK as a baby by his aid worker parents. He’s just been left by partner. He’s broke. He’s lost his job, he’s lost his furniture and he’s about to lose his flat. A knock on the door heralds an unexpected visitor; the immaculately dressed Mr Bankole. Bankole tells Leon that his adoptive parents were British agents who kidnapped him, and that he is, in fact, the grandson of Chief Onagaku, leader of the Tribal Lands, and first president of Mutabe after independence from the British. Now Mutabe is suffering under the yoke of the despotic Oblanga. The people are primed to revolt and free themselves. All they need is a figurehead. All they need is Leon. Bankole asks Leon to accompany him back to Mutabe without delay. Bankole doesn’t know it, but there could be a problem. Leon is gay and homosexuality is a capital offence in Mutabe.

Book excerpt: For Alan Carter the greatest personal sacrifice of the Great War of 1914-18 is being called-up after only one week of marriage. Leaving his new bride is even more painful than the wound that, months later, interrupts his war at sea and sends him to Cornwall to convalesce. For, there, he has time to think about Dora and about the career as a writer that he secretly nurtures. A career that seems possible when he finds himself accepted by the established colony of Newlyn artists. There is one artist in particular - Vicky Hazleton - who encourages Alan's leanings towards the arts. And she stirs other feelings: inappropriate and impossible ones. For Vicky and her set inhabit a different world from Alan. He, as one of Vicky's friends makes clear, belongs to London's East End - and to Dora . . .
