Book excerpt: Press Release : The gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Tom Uttech's recent paintings. The show will include fifteen paintings dating from 2005-2006. This will be his first exhibition since his 2004 retrospective at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Uttech constructs a world imbued with notions of the sublime. His panoramic views use deep perspective with the minutest details coming into sharp focus, creating a dreamlike sense of the infinite. While the scenes of verdant northern forests are familiar, Uttech uses otherworldly elements to suggest this is not the forest you think you know. This play shifts the work back and forth between realism and a mythical interpretation. A narrative is present, but ambiguous. Fauna, which is usually hidden, is visible. Sometimes in flight, othertimes in confrontational acknowledgment of the viewer - the zoomorphic elements evoke turbulence. The migration scenes are especially suggestive of imminent catastrophe. Also, there is no trace of the modern world,no power-lines, candy wrappers - no humans. It is an untouched ancient world from the past. Lucy Lippard writes in her essay, Magnetic North, the catalog essay for the Milwaukee Art Museum's retrospective: "Metaphor has always been a way to confront the depths. Uttech does not paint 'scenery' somuch as he offers metaphors for his exalted experience of nature. Nature confronted on her own turf is always potentially dangerous, and no amount of beauty can erase that undercurrent of anxiety and exhilaration we feel when we sleep alone outdoors or take risks in the wilds in the name of adventure or love of nature. Some lands seem inherently more menacing than others."

Book excerpt: Magnetic North: the Landscapes of Tom Uttech presents a survey of more than thirty years of Tom Uttech’s art. Uttech – one of the most widely admired landscape painters in America – reestablishes the wilderness as a mystical place where the colors of nature flourish and the various forces of nature are played out. He is inspired by the northern woods and prairie of Wisconsin and his numerous camping and canoeing trips to Northern Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada.

Book excerpt: Abrams' colorful series of useful, charming books celebrates the essence of each of the 50 United States. Each delightful book pictures and describes what is exceptional about a state -- its natural wonders, historical and cultural milestones, and industrial innovations -- and profiles the explorers, artists, writers, and personalities who shaped each state's distinctive heritage. Illustrated with fine and folk art, architecture, maps, memorabilia, and photographs of people and places, every book presents: -- Official state symbols -- Native American arts -- Musical traditions -- Roadside attractions -- Indigenous recipes -- Perennial calendar of statewide events -- List of museums and historical societies -- List of important tourist destinations The dairy state where idiosyncracies flourish and picture-perfect farmlands abound, Wisconsin is where you come for beer and bratwurst and where hamburgers are fried in butter. From Liberace to Spencer Tracy, from the sandstone canyons at the Dells to the log cabin that inspired Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic Little House in the Big Woods, from native son Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin to the nation's only whooping crane preserve -- here is a tribute to Wisconsin's singular delights for tourists, armchair travelers, and Packer-rooting cheeseheads alike.
