Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Mark Twain: Tom Sawyer; Abroad In this volume of Mark Twain's are gathered tales and sketches covering a period of no less than twenty-five years. "The Legend of Sagenfeld" was written during his early days on the Buffalo Express, as far back as 1870, and was first published in that newspaper. Tom Sawyer, Detective, was written in Paris, during the winter of 1894-95, after Mark Twain's business failure and when he was contemplating his lecture tour around the world. The other items were scattered through the years between. It is an entertaining volume, regardless of its lack of order. Probably its chief features are the two longer tales, "Tom Sawyer Abroad" and "Tom Sawyer, Detective." Ever since the success of Huck Finn, Clemens had been tempted to do more with his favorite characters and environment, particularly as he was being urged by Mrs. Mary Mapes Dodge, of St. Nicholas, to do something for that magazine. He began the purely fanciful tale of "Tom Sawyer Abroad" during the summer of 1892, in Germany, and finished it later in the year. It appeared serially in St. Nicholas the following winter. It would seem to have been an easy story for him to write, and, though by no means as great literature as the earlier adventures of Tom, Huck, and Nigger Jim, it proved a popular St. Nicholas feature. Book excerpt: Following on from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884-5) Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894) became one of Mark Twain's most popular books. Again we meet his world famous characters: Tom Sawyer, Nigger Jim, and Huck Finn - together now on a fantastical balloon journey across the Atlantic to meet lions and Bedouins in the Sahara and retrace something of Twain's own expedition to the Holy Land in his best-selling The Innocents Abroad (1869). Later, in Tom Sawyer Detective (1896), Twain returns us the banks of the Mississippi and a murder mystery involving identical twins and stolen diamonds. The author is back in his formative territory, the region his imagination could never leave behind. It provides him with another comedy of human foibles starring the irrepressible Tom Sawyer.

Book excerpt: Tom Sawyer Abroad This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
