But for one young witch seeking redemption, the Northern Circle coven will challenge her skills—and her heart—beyond measure. One tragic impulsive mistake made Chloe Winslow an outcast to her influential magic family. As a medical student, she wants to combine science with sorcery to heal those she hurt and right her wrongs. But brilliant, charismatic Devlin Marsh re-routes her plans with a once-in-eternity offer: membership in the exclusive Northern Circle, a mysterious Vermont coven known for pushing the limits. Enthralled by Devlin and their mesmerizing mutual attraction, Chloe makes a dangerous sacrifice to help the Circle’s high priestess awaken Merlin himself—and learn his timeless cures. But a foreshadowing soon causes Chloe to doubt the Circle's real motives, as well as Devlin’s . . . Now Merlin's demonic shade is loose in the human world, while Chloe and Devlin's uneasy alliance will pit them against ancient enemies, malevolent illusions, and shattering betrayal. And with the fate of two realms in the balance, Chloe must risk her untried power against a force she can't defeat—and a passion that could destroy her. Book excerpt: Between Two Worlds is the compelling and beautifully-crafted sequel to Beyond the Hedge, which showcased magical realism at its finest and introduced readers to a fantastical land like no other with deliciously eccentric characters who live in our hearts forever. Set in the seaside town of Irvine, Mairi Craws first fantasy novel chronicled the extraordinary adventures of 11-year old Sandy Henderson and her cat, Leo, when they chanced upon the parallel Scottish fairy world of Sylvania, a magical place where anything can happen and it invariably does. In Between Two Worlds, the Tartan Fairy Folk and their beloved monarch, Queen Celestina, once more find themselves plunged into chaos and despair as the dark shadows of relentless evil, twisted ambition and vile intent threaten their carefree, happy land. When Pongo, the ebulliently cheeky fairy dog, arrives unannounced in Scotland, Sandy embarks on a series of outrageous shenanigans which bring the magic and enchantments of Sylvania into her home and along the sombre, menacing corridors of her school, an ancient Victorian mansion with secrets of its own. What starts out as a merry romp quickly turns into the ultimate battle between good and evil, with a scourge of a villain whose malevolence knows no bounds. The chain of events unleashed threatens to destroy Sylvania and have hideous repercussions in Scotland too. Sandy joins forces with an outrageous collection of characters to protect her beloved homeland while the Tartan Fairy Folk go up against the darkest iniquity their world has ever seen. Will Queen Celestina and her subjects survive the ultimate onslaught on all they love and cherish? And will Sandy be able to make the huge sacrifices demanded of her for the greater good of those she loves?

Book excerpt: Magic stirred in me, offering whatever I wanted. With little more than a thought and a gesture or two, I could make magic do anything. So long as I was willing to pay the price… Allison Beckstrom knows better than most that when magic’s involved, nothing’s free. She’s had to pay its price of migraines and forgetfulness while working as a Hound, tracing illegal spells back to their casters. And even though magic has stolen her recent memory—including her history with the man she supposedly fell in love with—Allie isn’t about to give up on Hounding, or the city she cares about. Then the police’s magic enforcement division asks her to consult on what seems to be a straightforward missing persons case. But what began as a way to make rent leads Allie into grave danger when the trail she’s following draws her into the dark underworld of criminals, ghosts, and blood magic. There, Allie discovers it will take more than just magic to survive. “We’re going to be hearing a lot more of Devon Monk.” —New York Times Bestselling Author Patricia Briggs “Monk’s writing is addictive, and the only cure is more, more, more!” —New York Times Bestselling Author Rachel Vincent

Book excerpt: Syd Barrett was an art school student when he founded Pink Floyd. Famous before his 20th birthday, Barrett led the charge of psychedelia onstage at London s famed UFO club, and his acid-inspired lyrics became a hallmark of London s 1967 Summer of Love. By turns improvisatory and whimsical, Zen-like and hard-living, Barrett pushed the boundaries of music into new realms of artistic expression while fighting the demons of drug abuse and mental illness. This probing study, ten years in the writing, features a wealth of first-hand interviews with Syd's family, friends, and members of the band, giving us an unvarnished look at Barrett's life and work. Author Julian Palacios traces Barrett s swift evolution from precocious youth to internationally acclaimed psychedelic rock star, examining both his wide-ranging inspirations and his influence on generations of musicians. A never-to-be forgotten casualty of the excesses, innovations, and idealism of the 1960s, Syd Barrett is one of the most heavily mythologized men in rock, and this book offers a rare portrayal of this unique spirit in freefall."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonic Persuasion: Reading Sound in the Recorded Age critically analyzes a range of sounds on vocal and musical recordings, on the radio, in film, and in cartoons to show how sounds are used to persuade in subtle ways. Greg Goodale explains how and to what effect sounds can be "read" like an aural text, demonstrating this method by examining important audio cues such as dialect, pausing, and accent in presidential recordings at the turn of the twentieth century. Goodale also shows how clocks, locomotives, and machinery are utilized in film and literature to represent frustration and anxiety about modernity, and how race and other forms of identity came to be represented by sound during the interwar period. In highlighting common sounds of industry and war in popular media, Sonic Persuasion also demonstrates how programming producers and governmental agencies employed sound to evoke a sense of fear in listeners. Goodale provides important links to other senses, especially the visual, to give fuller meaning to interpretations of identity, culture, and history in sound.
