Book Synopsis Toads and Toadstools by : Adrian Morgan
Download or read book Toads and Toadstools written by Adrian Morgan and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many field guides and cookbooks have been written on mushrooms, fewer books have been devoted to frogs and toads (certainly field guides and perhaps a cookbook)—but none that we know of has ever addressed their curious historical relationships throughout the world. Artist and scholar Adrian Morgan has spent twelve years collecting, studying, drawing, painting, observing, and eating his subjects. The result is a glorious feast for the eye as well as the intellect. An astonishing compendium of art history, cultural anthropology, pharmacology, herpetology, mycology, and serious conjecture. TOADS & TOADSTOOLS will delight and amaze any armchair biologist. Brimming over with almost 150 illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Archie was born, his parents, the archduke and duchess of the former Atomauria, travelled to England and found themselves in Pudding, a small hamlet in Yorkshire County. Immediately upon arriving, and without much thought, they purchased a manor to call their home—the Toadstool Manor, built on top of a swamp constantly emitting gas and across the street from the notorious Soggy Goose and Cock. By the time Archie inherits the manor and marries his beautiful wife Charly, the manor is sinking on one side as gas releases from the rotting foundation. Two young boys seize the chance and make a whoopee cushion and attach it to the gas vent—making the manor fart! The magnificent musical manor becomes a tourist attraction, drawing people from all over. But blindsided by its new fame, Pudding starts to stumble. It’s up to Lord Archie and Lady Charly to keep the hamlet level-headed as they start gaining more attention than they could have hoped for. Will the hamlet let their newfound celebrity status go to their heads, or can they use it to improve the lives of those around them? Charming and funny, Toadstool Manor & Yorkshire Pudding is a must-read for anyone young at heart.

Download or read book Of Thee I Sing written by Ben Railton and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we talk about patriotism in America, we tend to mean one form: the version captured in shared celebrations like the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. But as Ben Railton argues, that celebratory patriotism is just one of four distinct forms: celebratory, the communal expression of an idealized America; mythic, the creation of national myths that exclude certain communities; active, acts of service and sacrifice for the nation; and critical, arguments for how the nation has fallen short of its ideals that seek to move us toward that more perfect union. In Of Thee I Sing, Railton defines those four forms of American patriotism, using the four verses of “America the Beautiful” as examples of each type, and traces them across our histories. Doing so allows us to reframe seemingly familiar histories such as the Revolution, the Civil War, and the Greatest Generation, as well as texts such as the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. And it helps us rediscover forgotten histories and figures, from Revolutionary War Loyalists and the World War I Espionage and Sedition Acts to active patriots like Civil War nurse Susie King Taylor and the suffragist Silent Sentinels to critical patriotic authors like William Apess and James Baldwin. Tracing the contested history of American patriotism also helps us better understand many of our 21st century debates: from Donald Trump’s divisive deployment of celebratory and mythic forms of patriotism to the backlash to the critical patriotisms expressed by Colin Kaepernick and the 1619 Project. Only by engaging with the multiple forms of American patriotism, past and present, can we begin to move forward toward a more perfect union that we all can celebrate.
Book Synopsis Trees and Toadstools by : M. C. Rayner
Download or read book Trees and Toadstools written by M. C. Rayner and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ... T]here are few indeed except trained naturalists who realize that any but a quite casual and superficial relation exists between these woodland toadstools and the trees under which they appear, or have carried their observations a stage further and noted the regular coincidence of certain kinds with particular tree species. The association between the toadstool-producing fungi of woodlands and our common trees is only one of many unlikely ways in which plants belonging to widely different groups are interrelated with one another and with the mechanism of life as a whole. Because this is so, and because there is a widespread and somewhat surprising lack of curiosity about the jigsaw puzzle formed by the different kinds of life that surround us in nature; about the interplay and interdependence of their various vital activities and the pattern formed when these are fitted together... it has seemed worth while to write this little book. (From the Introduction)
