Book Synopsis China and Global Change by : National Research Council
Download or read book China and Global Change written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given China's current and potential impacts on the global environment and the contributions Chinese science can make to global change research, China's full participation in international research programs dealing with global change is very important. This book provides insights into how research priorities are determined and detailed information about institutional infrastructure, human resources, and other factors that will constrain or facilitate Chinese responses to and research on global change issues. An overview of research relevant to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program and the World Climate Research Program is presented. Additionally, research in certain areas of atmospheric chemistry and physical and ecological interactions of the atmosphere and land surface are explored in further detail.

Book excerpt: Now in its 18th year, the NILOS Documentary Yearbook provides the reader with an excellent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by organizations, organs and bodies of the United Nations system. Documents of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, Meeting of States Parties to the UN Law of the Sea Convention, CLCS, ISBA, ITLOS, Follow-ups to the UN Fish Stocks and Small Island States Conferences, WSSD, ECOSOC, UNEP and UNCTAD are reproduced first, followed by the documents of FAO, IAEA, IMO and UNESCO/IOC. As in the previous volumes, documents which were issued in the course of 2002 are reproduced while other relevant documents are listed. The NILOS Documentary Yearbook has proved to be of invaluable assistance in facilitating access of the international community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation. The entry of the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention into force in 1994 and of the Part XI Agreement in 1996, as well as of the UN Fish Stocks Agreement in 2001, coupled with the ongoing follow-up to review of the UNCED Agenda 21 by the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit, make continuation of this assistance of particular significance in the years to come. The members of the Yearbook's Advisory Board are: Judges Abdul Koroma and Shigeru Oda of the ICJ, UNDOALOS Director Dr. Vladimir Golitsyn, ITLOS President Dolliver Nelson and Judges Thomas Mensah and Tullio Treves, as well as Rosalie Balkin, Edward Brown, Bernard Oxman and Shabtai Rosenne.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure of the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen in December 2009 to effectively reach a global agreement on emission reduction targets, led many within the developing world to view this as a reversal of the Kyoto Protocol and an attempt by the developed nations to shirk out of their responsibility for climate change. The issue of global warming has been at the top of the political agenda for a number of years and has become even more pressing with the rapid industrialization taking place in China and India. This book looks at the effects of climate change throughout different regions of the world and discusses to what extent cleantech and environmental initiatives such as the destruction of fluorinated greenhouse gases, biofuels, and the role of plant breeding and biotechnology. The book concludes with an insight into the socio-religious impact that global warming has, citing Christianity and Islam.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been known for some time that the behavior of the short-term fluctuations of the earth's atmosphere resembles that of a chaotic non-linear dynamical system, and that the day-to-day weather cannot be predicted beyond a few weeks. However, it has also been found that the interactions of the atmosphere with the underlying oceans and the land surfaces can produce fluctuations whose time scales are much longer than the limits of deterministic prediction of weather. It is, therefore, natural to ask whether it is possible that the seasonal and longer time averages of climate fluctuations can be predicted with sufficient skill to be beneficial for social and economic applications, even though the details of the day-to-day weather cannot be predicted beyond a few weeks. The main objective of the workshop was to address this question by assessing the current state of knowledge on predictability of seasonal and interannual climate variability and to investigate various possibilities for its prediction.
