Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State of the art modeling of investment behavior and analysis of incentive and allocative effects of taxation on investment behavior are reported in these proceedings. Leading researchers from seven OECD countries treat problems ranging from modeling investment behavior and estimating investment equations with various data sets to detailed studies of tax influences on investment behavior. Particular attention is paid to tax reform plans, especially in West Germany and the UK. The role of financial variables and uncertainty is analysed. A major topic in the volume is recent work within Tobin's Q-theoretic framework. Papers report developments and applications of Q-type investment functions, and for the first time estimated Q-theoretic investment equations are presented for West German industries taking into account the complex tax structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment across the euro area remains below its pre-crisis level. Its performance has been weaker than in most previous recessions and financial crises. This paper shows that a part of this weakness can be explained by output dynamics, particularly before the European sovereign debt crisis. The rest is explained by a high cost of capital, financial constraints, corporate leverage, and uncertainty. There is a considerable cross country heterogeneity in terms of both investment dymanics and its determinants. Based on the findings of this paper, investment is expected to pick up as the recovery strengthens and uncertainty declines, but persistent financial fragmentation and high corporate leverage in some countries will likely continue to weigh on investment.

Book excerpt: Argues that the demand for highly skilled labour and flexibility of work organisation increases the functional role of industrial relations while, at the same time, undermining the role of traditional semi- autonomous institutional subsystems. Suggests that product market developments may not only revive older, radical concepts of labour- oriented product policy but also induce trade unions to adopt a more conscious regard to product, marketing and technical strategies.

Book excerpt: The object of this book is to compare the macroeconomic characteristics of the French and German economies. It focusses on the effect of stabilization policy and of international disturbances and tries to find out the trade-offs of economic policy. The study is based on a simulation analysis using large-scale econometric models of the two countries. Instead of using models as black boxes the dynamic structures are compared in considerable detail. This entails decomposing the models into blocs of strategic sets of equations. Comparing bloc by bloc allows one to distinguish between the contribution of various economic processes (price-wage dynamics, monetary mechanism, multiplier-accelerator interaction) to macroeconomic performance. Main features: Franco-German comparison of macroeconomic response to policy measures and international shocks; Evaluation of policy trade-offs; Detailed institutional and historical background to macro-policy in France and Germany.
