Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco Breeding in Connecticut Tobacco is a naturally close pollinated plant, although inter crossing through the agency of insects is probably somewhat frequent. Observations on the earlier blossoms of the flower head have convinced the writers that in many cases, at least, fertilization of the pistil has taken place before the blossom opens. In the later flowers the chances of intercrossing are much greater, as the blossom often opens before fertilization has been accomplished. It is evident that, as tobacco is a naturally close-fertilized plant, it must be vigorous under self fertilization, but some data on actual controlled inbreeding are given to further substantiate this belief. Darwin, in his classical experiments on inbreeding and cross breeding, found some types which were very vigorous when continually self-fertilized. Garner (1912) reports that a number of types have been inbred under bags for six or eight years by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture without any observable change in vigor or growth habit. A certain strain of our present Connecticut Cuban shade type, now grown on one of our large plantations, was inbred for a period of five years (1903-1908) by saving seed from individual plants under a paper bag. Since that time seed has been saved from desirable plants under cloth tent, the chances, however, seeming very small that seed so produced will be cross-fertilized. Instead of showing a loss of vigor due to self-fertilization, this type seems more Vigorous than in the early years of its introduction. The Sumatra type, which has been used as one of our parent varieties, has been inbred for a period of seven years, without giving any evidence of accumulated evil effects of inbreeding. June 27 was spent at Palestine, tex., and J une 28 and 29 at Nacogdoches, Tex, in examination of tobacco fields. At Quincy the writer was associated with Mr. W. W. Cobey, tobacco-breeding expert of the Bureau of Plant Industry, from whom valuable advice and suggestions were received. The writer again Visited Quincy in October, 1905, and spent two weeks in a further examination. A continuation of the work was planned foii 1906, but could not be carried out, although a Visit was made at Quincy in November to determine the results obtained where remedial measures had been employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Agricultural Experiment Stations on Tobacco Various methods of starting tobacco seed were compared at the Alabama State Station in 1892 and Seed was started in open beds and in beds covered with cheese cloth. During the first year of the experiments the greater number of plants in the open beds were destroyed during a cold spell in March, and during the second season they were injured by the flea beetle. In the covered beds the plants came up well, grew rapidly, and were not subject to insect attacks. From the results obtained it is evident that under the climatic condi tions of Alabama young tobacco plants are readily affected by low temperatures and quickly killed by freezing weather. The method of starting the seed in a covered bed was the most successful. The Colorado Station2 in pursuing this work in 1889 found that it took no longer to produce plants suitable for setting out by growing seeds in cold frames than by the use of the hotbed. It must be obvious to every person, who ever paid any attention to the subject, how badly a plant grows in the shade, of course when Tobacco is planted too close, one half of the leaves on the stalk are robbed of a due proposition of light and air, and all the lower leaves will be thin and chafi'y. I would advise the intelligent planter to make ex periments, and on soils of equal strength to plant some tobacco at three feet apart and some at three feet four inches, he will then be better able to judge which is best.
