The brilliant student of an earlier generation returns to his Sudanese village; obsession with the mysterious West and a desire to bite the hand that has half-fed him, has led him to London and the beds of women with similar obsessions about the mysterious East. He kills them at the point of ecstasy and the Occident, in its turn, destroys him. Powerfully and poetically written and splendidly translated by Denys Johnson-Davies.' Observer
Book Synopsis Invitation to The North by : Hermann Tietgen
Download or read book Invitation to The North written by Hermann Tietgen and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man with a recent degree in Agriculture from the University of Berlin, Hermann came to Canada in 1930 to escape inflation and lack of jobs in Germany. A chance encounter led him to the North and a job prospecting for gold. He fell in love with the North like so many others had done before him. In 1939 the declaration of war against Germany stopped all searches for gold in the North. Suddenly other minerals were more important. This brought all the gold prospectors to Edmonton from the North and there were many more men than jobs. Hermann, his wife, and little daughter moved ‘back’ to Montreal where he was hoping to find a job. Fortunately, through a friend of a friend, he did land a job at an alloy-producing plant in Beauharnois, Quebec near Montreal. The first job was as a ‘stoker’ on a platform above the huge vats of molten metal, stirring the mass which would be used to make armoured steel for vehicles and tanks, for the Canadian Armed Forces. He worked at St. Lawrence Alloys as a Stores Keeper and then as the Purchasing Agent, until he retired in 1968. He died in 1970, never having returned to the North which he loved so well. This is his story in his own words.
Book Synopsis The Race to the North by : David Wragg
Download or read book The Race to the North written by David Wragg and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, some of Britains leading main-line railway companies threw caution to the winds in an attempt to provide the fastest passenger express services between London and Scotland. These became known as the races to the north. There were two phases, in 1888 and 1895, and they spurred the building of new bridges across the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay.David Wraggs gripping, detailed narrative tells the story of this epic engineering and commercial competition. He concentrates on the determination of the railway companies to see who could provide the fastest schedule between London and the main Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.Casting aside their early policy of co-existence on these prestigious and lucrative routes, the West Coast and East Coast companies were drawn into a period of intense, highly publicized rivalry as they sought to dominate the market. David Wragg gives an insight into the conduct of the well-publicized highs and tragic lows of this dramatic story the extension of the lines to the far north, the building of the Tay and Forth bridges including the collapse of the first Tay bridge with 72 fatalities and the repeated bids by the companies to cut the journey times. While he describes the public side of this fascinating story, David Wragg fills in the background, which is no less interesting the pioneering engineering of the steam age, the massive construction projects, the cut-throat battle for passengers and freight and the deep inter-company rivalries that drove the rapid development of the railways during the Victorian period.
Book Synopsis William Robert Broughton's Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific 1795-1798 by : Andrew David
Download or read book William Robert Broughton's Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific 1795-1798 written by Andrew David and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited and richly annotated by Lt Cdr Andrew David, this volume offers for the first time a complete transcript of the handwritten journal kept by William Broughton on his voyage to the North Pacific (1795-1798), together with supplementary letters and the journal of Broughton's journey across Mexico (1793). An extensive introduction by Professor Barry Gough places the voyage in its historical context. Broughton had first visited the North Pacific in 1792 in command of the brig Chatham during Vancouver's voyage. When negotiations between Vancouver and Juan Francisco Bodega y Quadra reached an impasse, Broughton was sent back to London to seek fresh instructions, travelling across Mexico and returning to Europe in Spanish ships. Back in London in July 1793 he was appointed in command of the sloop Providence with orders to rejoin Vancouver in the Pacific, taking with him the astronomer John Crosley.
Download or read book The North written by Paul Morley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the age of seven, old enough to form an identity but too young to be aware that 'southern' was a category, Paul Morley has always thought of himself as a northerner. What that meant, he wasn't entirely sure. But he wondered why, when as a child he was so ready to abandon his Cheshire roots and support the much more successful Lancashire cricket team, and when as an adult he found he could travel between London and Manchester in less than two hours, he continued to say he was from the north.

Download or read book Through the Air to the North Pole written by Roy Rockwood and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Rockwood was a house pseudonym used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate for boy's adventure books. The name is mostly well-remembered for the Bomba, the Jungle Boy (1926-1937) and Great Marvel series (1906- 1935). The Stratemeyer Syndicate was the producer of a number of series for children and adults including the Nancy Drew mysteries, the Hardy Boys, and others. The Stratemeyer Syndicate was the creation of Edward Stratemeyer, whose ambition was to be a writer la Horatio Alger. He succeeded in this ambition (eventually even writing eleven books under the pseudonym "Horatio Alger"), turning out inspirational, up-by-the-bootstraps tales. In Stratemeyer's view, it was not the promise of sex or violence that made such reading attractive to boys; it was the thrill of feeling "grown-up" and the desire for a series of stories, an "I want some more" syndrome. Works written under that name include: Five Thousand Miles Underground; or, The Mystery of the Centre of the Earth (1908), Jack North's Treasure Hunt; or, Daring Adventures in South America (1907) and Lost on the Moon; or, In Quest of the Field of Diamonds (1911).
