Book excerpt: The Red Wheelbarrow 9 continues the tradition of poetic excellence associated with Rutherford, NJ, hometown of major American poet William Carlos Williams. The Red Wheelbarrow Poets continue to attract the best of local poets and others drawn to the flame of modern 21st Century versifying. The RWP runs an ongoing weekly poetry workshop (it has been ongoing for ten years now) and monthly readings at both the Williams Center and GainVille Cafe in Rutherford. Participants in those three events are eligible for inclusion in the anthology, and this year we have nearly 50 poets and writers in a book that is bursting at the seams with poetry, prose and art. May the tribe increase!

O’Meara’s thoughtful poem about the pandemic, quarantine, and the future suggests there is meaning to be found in our shared experience of the coronavirus and conveys an optimistic message about the possibility of profound healing for people and the planet. Her words encourage us to look within, listen deeply, and connect with ourselves and the earth in order to heal. O’Meara, a former teacher and chaplain and a spiritual director, clearly captures important aspects of the pandemic experience. Her words, written in March 2020 and shared on Facebook, immediately resonated nationally and internationally and were widely circulated on social media, covered in mainstream news media, and inspired an outpouring of creativity from musicians, dancers, artists, filmmakers, and more. The many highlights include an original composition by John Corigliano that was premiered by Renée Fleming.

Book excerpt: Bill Kauffman has carved out an idiosyncratic identity quite unlike any other American writer. Praised by the likes of Gore Vidal, Benjamin Schwarz, and George McGovern, he has, with a distinctive and slashingly witty, learnedly allusive style, illumed forgotten corners of American history, articulated a defiant and passionate localism, and written with love and dark humor of his repatriation. Poetry Night at the Ballpark gathers the best of Bill Kauffman's essays and journalism in defense and explication of his alternative America--or Americas. Its discrete pieces are bound by a thematic unity and propulsive energy and are full of unexpected (yet startlingly apposite) connections and revelatory linkages. Whether he's writing about conservative Beats, backyard astronomers, pacifist West Pointers, or Middle America in the movies, Bill Kauffman will challenge, maybe even change, the way you look at American politics and the American provinces.

Book excerpt: King Lear of the Taxi is a philosophical journey through poetry and prose of a struggling actor who must earn a grueling living as a taxi driver-while striving to attain artistic success. Davidson Garrett's self-portrait is a glimpse at an ever-changing New York City-where the inflation rate multiplies by the week-and aspiring artists are threatened by an urban society that values real estate over the long-term health of the arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is under attack. Foreign adversaries are working to undermine our way of life. Domestic polarization is straining our community as a nation. American unity is at a premium. Americans urgently need to re-member our first principles which are set forth in the Preamble of the Constitution, the national purpose of the United States. As we re-member these principles and their purpose we are developing a dynamic Preamble 2.0 that is necessarily today’s interpretations of yesterday’s explanations for tomorrow’s anticipations. The American Experiment is centered around the creativity of native and naturalized citizens whose ancestries come from around the world. America is the leading world nation on Earth, and a model for the global future of all 195 countries in the United Nations. This Model of America’s Promise, the MAP of meta civics for America, is set forth here in the first principles and their foremost pursuits re-membered as Preamble 2.0.

Book excerpt: Act One is the autobiography of Moss Hart, an American playwright and theatre director. Born into impoverished circumstances—his father was often unemployed—Hart left school at age twelve for a series of odd jobs that included being an entertainment director at a Catskills summer resort. Hart’s big break came in 1930 with the Broadway hit Once in a Lifetime, written with George Kaufman. The two would collaborate again on You Can’t Take It With You (1936) and The Man Who Came To Dinner (1939). You Can’t Take It With You won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1937, and the 1938 film version, directed by Frank Capra, won Oscars for both Best Picture and Best Director. Act One was adapted for a 1963 film starring George Hamilton, and for a 2014 stage production starring Tony Shalhoub and Andrea Martin. HarperTorch brings great works of non-fiction and the dramatic arts to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of conversion and assimilation of Jews in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to the present Between the French Revolution and World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews left the Jewish fold—by becoming Christians or, in liberal states, by intermarrying. Telling the stories of both famous and obscure individuals, Leaving the Jewish Fold explores the nature of this drift and defection from Judaism in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to today. Arguing that religious conviction was rarely a motive for Jews who became Christians, Todd Endelman shows that those who severed their Jewish ties were driven above all by pragmatic concerns—especially the desire to escape the stigma of Jewishness and its social, occupational, and emotional burdens. Through a detailed and colorful narrative, Endelman considers the social settings, national contexts, and historical circumstances that encouraged Jews to abandon Judaism, and factors that worked to the opposite effect. Demonstrating that anti-Jewish prejudice weighed more heavily on the Jews of Germany and Austria than those living in France and other liberal states as early as the first half of the nineteenth century, he reexamines how Germany's political and social development deviated from other European states. Endelman also reveals that liberal societies such as Great Britain and the United States, which tolerated Jewish integration, promoted radical assimilation and the dissolution of Jewish ties as often as hostile, illiberal societies such as Germany and Poland. Bringing together extensive research across several languages, Leaving the Jewish Fold will be the essential work on conversion and assimilation in modern Jewish history for years to come.
