This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the extent of diversity and relationships among a worldwide safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) germplasm collection and to find out adapted accessions that can be used in an organic safflower breeding program in Germany. A total of 468 accessions were studied under organic farming conditions at Kleinhohenheim experimental station during the seasons of 2004 and 2005. All the accessions were evaluated for 12 phenotypic traits and three rated diseases. Multivariate analyses have been used to measure the diversity in a subset of 200 accessions and 11 geographical regions. Generally, the study showed that there was a large genetic variation within accessions. A coefficient of variation (CV %) for investigated traits and diseases ranged from 2.9 to 91.0% with the highest CV was recorded for yield/m², yield/plant and seeds/plant. The most accessions that originated in Europe revealed relatively better performance compared to non-Europeans. High yielding, early maturing, and disease tolerant accessions were identified. However, the low oil content (8.7-22.8%) is the primary concern in this germplasm collection. The degree of heritability varied between 10% for lodging to 86% for plant height. Genotypic coefficient of correlation (rg) was slightly higher for many traits than the respective phenotypic coefficient. Oil content and seed yield/m² were highly significantly correlated (rg=0.78). The genotypic coefficient of correlation showed that selection for seeds/plant and thousand kernel weight was effective for improvement of seed yield and oil content. The results of the principal component analysis and the clustering pattern of accessions were consistent with the results of analysis of variance. About 78% of the total phenotypic diversity in the germplasm was explained on the basis of four principal components and 88% of the total variation among geographical regions was contributed by the first three principal components. The distribution of the accessions within clusters has no apparent relationship with the geographical origin. However, many of the European accessions have a tendency to stay together.
Book Synopsis Early Growth Vigor in Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.) by : Mariana Mostafa Yazbek
Download or read book Early Growth Vigor in Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.) written by Mariana Mostafa Yazbek and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variation in early vigor was moderate to high, t his variation was highly significant between the different genotypes tested. Yet. the effect of divergent selection for early vigor on seed yield was not significant. The most important yield contributing character in safflower was the number of seeds per plant. Head number per plant gave the highest indirect effect on seed yield through the number of seeds per plant.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this research were to study morphological characteristics of safflower accessions collected from different parts of the world, to determine the yield potential, and to describe the extent of biodiveristy of the collection. Germination, speed of germination and germination elasticity were tested under varying levels of moisture stress. Seed oil content was also determined. Molecular characterization, using RAPD analysis was performed on all accessions. In addition, a field experiment was done at AREC to assess growth, yield and other morphological characters under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. Percentage germination and speed of germination were significantly affected by choice of accessions as well as osmotic stress. Germination elasticity, on the other hand, was not affected by osmotic potential, and most accessions showed poor recover)' following stress. A wide range of seed oil content, 37.75 to 62.30 % was observed. Many variables, such as plant height, time to harvest and seed yield were not affected by irrigation treatment, but differ between accessions. Cluster analysis resulted in different groupings depending on quantitative, qualitative or DNA results. Also, accessions were grouped differently when irrigated and non-irrigated variable results were compared. Diversity analysis therefore is highly affected by and changes according to prevalent conditions. It is therefore recommended that such analysis be performed under conditions resembling the target area of production.
Book Synopsis Water Stress Physiology and Crop Modeling of Spring Safflower Under Different Irrigation Management Strategies by : Sukhbir Singh (Ph.D.)

This book was released on 2016 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a deep rooted drought tolerant crop that originated in desert environments of the Middle East, and could be very well adapted to the semi-arid Southern High Plains. A field experiment was conducted at Clovis, New Mexico during 2012 and 2013 seasons to assess drought physiology and yield formation of two diverse spring safflower cultivars under different irrigation levels with or without preseason irrigation. One half of the experimental blocks received preseason irrigation of 164 in 2012 and 153 mm in 2013 to refill the soil profile utilized by the previous crops, while the other half remained depleted. Five in-season irrigation levels (I1 to I5) ranging from 88 to 392 mm in 2012 and from 83 to 373 mm in 2013 were imposed on both preseason irrigation and no-preseason irrigation blocks. Higher leaf water potential ([psi]1) was observed under increased water availability either by preseason irrigation or by higher in-season irrigation level in safflower during two observation dates in both years. Osmotic potential at full turgor ([psi][pi]100), photosynthesis rate (Pn) and transpiration rate (Tr) decreased with a reduction in [psi]1 under water stress conditions. The relative water content (RWC) was affected only by the in-season irrigation levels in both years. The preseason irrigation increased seed yield of safflower by 39 and 118% over no-preseason irrigation in 2012 and 2013, respectively. A gradual increase in seed yield was observed with an increase in irrigation levels; and the highest irrigation level, I5 increased seed yield by 85 and 171% over the lowest irrigation level, I1 in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Seed yield increased with increase in Pn, plant biomass, number of heads per plant, and number of seeds per head but not with 1000-seed weight under increased water availability. Overall, increased availability of water through preseason irrigation or through in-season irrigation levels improved safflower physiology and yield formation.
