Book excerpt: 2021 ARAB AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD WINNER Children's Africana Book Award (CABA) 2021 Honor Book NCSS 2021 Notable Social Studies Book Kanzi’s family has moved from Egypt to America, and on her first day in a new school, what she wants more than anything is to fit in. Maybe that’s why she forgets to take the kofta sandwich her mother has made for her lunch, but that backfires when Mama shows up at school with the sandwich. Mama wears a hijab and calls her daughter Habibti (dear one). When she leaves, the teasing starts. That night, Kanzi wraps herself in the beautiful Arabic quilt her teita (grandma) in Cairo gave her and writes a poem in Arabic about the quilt. Next day her teacher sees the poem and gets the entire class excited about creating a “quilt” (a paper collage) of student names in Arabic. In the end, Kanzi’s most treasured reminder of her old home provides a pathway for acceptance in her new one. This authentic story with beautiful illustrations includes a glossary of Arabic words and a presentation of Arabic letters with their phonetic English equivalents.

Book excerpt: All hell was raging against my mind. I needed some time alone with the Lord and to just be alone, away from everyone. I needed to calm myself down. The only solace I could find was in a washroom. In that little cubicle, totally at the end of myself, I surrendered to His will. Nothing else mattered at this point except what He wanted. Knowing I was in my Heavenly Father's hand, I cried "Lord by obedience I will go. Give me your words to say. Help me Lord " Sonia McLeod, a former alcoholic and drug addict, shares the miraculous story of how God delivered her from a street life of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. Hear the heart of this woman as she takes us through a journey of faith amidst great tragedy, heartbreak, and betrayal. Cast aside by friends, family, and finally by her husband, she emerges from the ashes of ruin and rejection in the arms of her true lover, Jesus Christ. "I was not going to give up and die, but it was time to RISE UP in JESUS " "If God can do this in Sonia's life, He can do it in others. Pray for this book. It will touch many lives." ?-Reverend Ernie & Shirley Linklater, Full Gospel Aboriginal Ministries, Canada Sonia McLeod, a member of the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada, is a born-again believer in Jesus Christ. Since the writing of this book she has pursued studies in Social Work, gotten married, and is working on reaching First Nation and indigenous communities across Canada and the world. Sixteen-year-old Yara has only ever known life in a Palestinian refugee camp, but when she receives an opportunity to work in Paris for the summer, the trajectory of her life shifts entirely. In the care of the sophisticated Allard family, Yara is introduced to city life and habits and experiences a sexual awakening with the family’s son. The Allards help Yara secure a spot at Berea College in Kentucky, where she has further romantic adventures and meets Moens Thomasson, a half-Black student who has ambitions of becoming a Supreme Court justice. As Yara progresses through higher education, she meets influential friends including Rachel and Jameela, whose families adopt Yara by affection. When Moens suddenly reappears in Yara’s life, she discovers he is a manipulative sexual predator who holds troubling racial views and resorts to life-threatening measures to reach his goals. Enlisting the help of Rachel, Jameela, and family members, they set into action a lengthy battle, legal and otherwise, that could jeopardize their standing with the university and the authorities. Yet through all of this, the three friends prevail and end up forming tight bonds, even finding love in unexpected places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the complete works (poetry and fiction) of Khalil Gibran. Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese-American writer, poet and visual artist, also considered a philosopher although he himself rejected this title in his lifetime. He is best known as the author of The Prophet, which was first published in the United States in 1923 and is one of the best-selling books of all time, having been translated into more than 100 languages. As worded by Suheil Bushrui and Joe Jenkins, Gibran's life has been described as one "often caught between Nietzschean rebellion, Blakean pantheism and Sufi mysticism." Gibran discussed "such themes as religion, justice, free will, science, love, happiness, the soul, the body, and death" in his writings, which were "characterized by innovation breaking with forms of the past, by symbolism, an undying love for his native land, and a sentimental, melancholic yet often oratorical style." He explored literary forms as diverse as "poetry, parables, fragments of conversation, short stories, fables, political essays, letters, and aphorisms." Salma Khadra Jayyusi has called him "the single most important influence on Arabic poetry and literature during the first half of [the twentieth] century", and he is still celebrated as a literary hero in Lebanon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a) sent shockwaves through the early Muslim community. Today, this tragedy is still remembered, studied, and commemorated. However, in recent years, there have been increasing questions over the reliability of the historical accounts of his martyrdom. What material is reliable, and what sources can be used when presenting the narrative of his martyrdom to others? The Chronicles of the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn was compiled to fill the need for a strongly reliable source on Imam Husayn’s (a) final days. Meticulously researched, it contains narrations about the Imam’s last stand that are found only in the earliest extant sources. Hand-selected for their reliability, they have been arranged and translated into fluid, precise English. No detail of the narrative of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a) has been left out, from his fateful journey towards Iraq, to the journey of the captives afterwards and the events surrounding Arba‘in. The Chronicles also includes narrations on related topics of interest, such as the custom of mourning the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a) and fasting on the day of Ashura. Ample preliminary matter written by recognised Islamic scholars addresses the question of the reliability of early and medieval sources, the nature of the oral versus the written tradition, and the challenges faced in the modern era in presenting a reliable account of Imam Husayn’s (a) martyrdom. The Arabic text of the narrations has been included throughout, and the work is rounded out with five detailed maps of the Imam’s journey. This work is certain to find a special place in the personal library of historians, students and scholars of Islam, those speaking from the pulpit, and anyone with an interest in Imam Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (a). Compiled by Muhammad Muhammadi Rayshahri Translated by Abbas Jaffer

Book excerpt: This story is set in the late seventh and early eighth centuries and focuses on the life of a young Saxon, Alric, born in the year 775 at Wearmouth in Northumbria. He has a twin sister, Hilda. His parents plan for them to take vows. Alric will enter the monastery at Wearmouth, while Hilda will enter the convent to the south, at Whitby. All is well until Wearmouth is the focus of an attack by sea raiders (now known as Vikings) from Scandinavia who appeared out of the morning mists, killing and pillaging without remorse. In Alric's sixteenth year they return to Wearmouth, and Alric is captured. He is taken from his home as a captive bound for a fjord in what is now modern Norway. A severe storm causes the ship to be beached, and the raiders suffer the same fate as their victims, but at the hands of a party of Mesopotamian soldiers. Through the courtesy of the commander, Alric eventually ends up in Baghdad, where Harun al-Rashid (Aaron the Just) is the Caliph and at the time the tales of A Thousand and One Arabian Nights were being told by the Caliph's wife, Scheherazade. Alric is apprenticed to an alchemist with medical knowledge, where his role is to pursue science and develop drugs and other chemicals that help the Caliph's cause. During this time, Alric becomes a valuable member of the Caliph's inner circle and becomes familiar with the inner workings of the House of Light, comprising the royal palace and the Great Library. As a result of his work, he is able to rise from the position of captive to apprentice to a status in which he is able to make contributions to science and medicine. However, he becomes embroiled in the politics of the palace and a plot to assassinate the Caliph. Coupled with this, he discovers a cuneiform tablet that had once been the prized possession of King Nebuchadnezzar and gives him an insight into chemical and medical science. This tablet also contains a prophecy that Alric must fulfill.

Book excerpt: Everything that meant anything to Dr. Janet Washington was wiped out in a single day. After the ten-year devastation, she swore she would regain control of her life, only this time her way. Her resentment caused her to spew venom at anyone who crossed her path, especially her staff member, Pamela Scott. Why? Because Pamela had everything Janet believed God snatched from her, including her faith. She built a web of bitterness to protect her pain, but gets tangled in her own trap when she meets Michael, a good-looking man twenty years her junior. Every day, this prominent psychiatrist treats mental illness, yet she fails to realize that she herself is in need of more help than any of her patients. Pamela's spiritual discernment reveals that the doctor is in serious trouble and in need of prayer. At rock bottom and with no one else to turn to, Janet turns to Pamela, the very person she despises, and then her healing begins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England may be a small country on a small island, but its inhabitants have always had a boundless curiosity about the world beyond their shoreline. From the nation's modern origins in the Renaissance, travellers have eagerly roamed the globe and been enticed by the diversity and richness of other civilizations. And while this appetite for adventure has often been tainted by aggression or exploitation, the English have also carried within them a capacity to soak up new experiences and ideas and to weave them into every aspect of life back home, from language and literature to customs and culture. Here we trace this golden thread of otherness through five centuries of English history to reveal how it has shaped the buildings, flavoured the food, powered the economy, and created a truly diverse society. Today, when England is no longer synonymous with Britain and the English ask themselves who they are, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown paints a sumptuous and illuminating portrait of who they have been and brings a fresh, invigorating perspective on what 'Englishness' really means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a shared experience of time and space in the post-civil-war city of Beirut: “the suspended now”. Based on the close analysis of a large corpus of cultural objects; including visual art, literature, architecture and cinema; the book argues that last decades have witnessed a gradual shift in understanding this temporality from being a transitional phase to a more durable experience of precariousness. The theoretically rich analyses take us on a journey through Beirut’s real and imagined geographies, from garbage dumps to real estate advertisements, and from subterranean spaces to martyr’s posters. For scholars of cultural analysis, urban studies, cultural geography and critical theory, the case of post-1990 Beirut offers a fascinating case of neoliberal urban renewal, which challenges existing theories. For scholars of Lebanon and Beirut, this study complements existing work on post-civil-war Lebanese cultural production rooted in trauma studies by its focus on the city’s continual exposure to violence.
