Book excerpt: Follow Father Tim and Cynthia on their journey to research his Kavanagh ancestry in the Irish countryside in this novel in the beloved Mitford series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jan Karon. Vacation—the very word has been foreign to Episcopal priest Tim Kavanagh. Now retired from tending his flock in the village of Mitford, he is making good on a promise to show his wife, Cynthia, the charming land of his Irish ancestors. But after arriving at a Lough Arrow fishing lodge in the midst of a torrential downpour, the charm disappears. They find their holiday upended by an intruder, a treasured painting is stolen from the lodge, and a family conflict dating back nearly a century turns even more bitter. As three generations struggle to find deliverance from the crucifying power of secrets, Tim and Cynthia stumble upon a faded journal that might just explain the crime—and offer a chance at redemption.

Book excerpt: A kidnapping gone wrong. A chronically ill child. And a union nobody sees coming…except the barrel of a gun. Quin Hedger is a rare breed. He’s a doctor who grew up on a ranch, with four brothers, a pious mother and a father who left this earth not long ago. Quin is hard-working, has a heart of gold, and will do anything for any of his patients, namely one. Getting little Trinity a new kidney isn’t any easy task, but he’s been at it since she was a baby and he isn’t giving up, not even when her corrupt Uncle arranges an ill-fated kidnapping that has a sudden twist. Whitney has raised Trinity all but on her own. Trinity’s father left when he couldn’t handle dealing with a sick child, but thankfully her brother Peter is there to sweep up the bits and fill the gaps…until he’s more trouble than he’s worth. Trinity’s doctor, who insists on being called ‘Dr. Quin’ as a kind sentiment, has always put her daughter front and center, so it tugs at both their heartstrings when they have to watch her health start to deteriorate. When Trinity’s father surprises Quin and Whitney, they’re led down a path of hope, only to be let down once again, as Trinity lays in hospital, missing out on her young life. Although hopeful, Quin keeps hitting brick walls in his quest to find what the little girl needs, and in doing so, he also finds what he’s always needed, but he can’t have both until the one he loves can love again. It’s a slippery slope and a tricky one at best. And when Quin finally sees the fog clear, he finds himself looking down the barrel of a gun. Book excerpt: Two lawyers; as unlikely a union as two Scorpios…the secret that could ruin their lives…and the miracle that saves them. Rachel Thomas is a coveted El Paso lawyer. Her prowess in the courtroom is enough to shun any criminal into retirement. But her partnership in the legal firm is sullied by the big cheese, who burdens his staff with large case loads while he basks on his yacht for sport. The ranch she grew up on seems a distant memory most weeks, while she prepares briefings and depositions for her clients, and her family slops horse manure and raises beasts, all while missing their beloved sister and daughter. Until Chad Hedger walks into the firm one day, dulling her focus and warming her bed, quicker than she could win a case. Chad Hedger lives a life most men would only dream of, with one exception. He’s a successful attorney, single, painfully handsome, and has enough charm to win over any female. Trouble is, no female has ever caught his eye. And his family life is displaced so much that any woman would run the other way. When Chad is disowned by his father, he’s forced to move from his beloved hometown in Dallas, to El Paso, and has been sworn to never look back. And when he begins working for the same law firm as Rachel Thomas, he begins missing Dallas more than ever. Rachel is the only salvation Chad has, but is that enough? When tragedy strikes back home in Dallas, Chad has to make a quick decision, and move back to his hometown, leaving behind a girl who has shown him more love than anyone else has his entire life. He has to choose between two things that matter more to him than anything, but he doesn’t realize that there is a third thing. And neither does Rachel, until Chad’s bags are packed. Is it too late? Book excerpt: An unexpected union. A mystery intruder. A miracle. And a wedding that threatens the family. After an abrupt departure from her previous career, Presley never expects to be so well received at the rival company, despite the null and void NDA and questionable, discreet reason why she parted ways. But Presley was not raised to mosey her way through life, having been raised by her aunt after her parent’s death, she’s bumped uglies with many things, some of which she’s dealt with accordingly, and some she has not. Will is fed up with his deadbeat IT manager, and so he praises Presley’s headstrong and intelligent ways when she takes over that department. Just five minutes with this woman has him hooked, and soon he realizes just how much her heart is in the job. It’s unprecedented to him, and he finds himself jumping through hoops to happily show her his accolades, including promoting her to COO before her probationary period is up. When the holidays arrive, it comes to light that Presley will be flying solo for Christmas, and Will is having none of it. After a simple horse-riding lesson, a new Stetson, and a bottle of wine, Will starts to see Presley in a whole new light, and the feeling is mutual. A night of sheer terror, not passion, ensues, and the bond between Will and Presley is tightened, but not in a way that they expect. Between Will’s sister Laura being hospitalized and a mystery guest trying to break into the company on Christmas Day, Will and Presley find themselves pressing through and finding strength and comfort in each other. But Presley’s secret is part of what fuels the hunt for the mystery intruder, along with a laundry list of potential suspects who have both threatened and who have actually harmed family members in the past. Problem is, most of those lowlifes are already serving time. Just when the family is about to welcome another member into their already blissfully happy family, the perpetrator strikes at the right time, and at the wrong time. Will this person live to tell, or will the Kelsey family band together and crush them in the way that only the Kelsey family can? A tale of two alike people who have lived very different lives but find common ground and strength in each other. A combination best friends to lovers and office romance that will lift your spirits and make you believe in miracles. This has a special Christmas twist, but it can be enjoyed all year round. Read all about Will. Readers have been dying to have him pair up, and he finally meets the love of his life that he meets in an unexpected way. Pick up your copy today! Crime reporter Samantha Adams is working on a book called American Weird when her boyfriend, Harry, invites her to a barbecue cookoff in Tupelo, Mississippi. It’s hard to turn down a drive to Elvis’s birthplace in a genuine pink Cadillac. And as Harry points out, the King’s birthplace “ought to be lousy with weird.” As they soon discover, lousy is right—and weird is just the beginning. Also visiting Tupelo is Mary Ann McClanahan. After killing her worthless husband, Carlin, she discovered he was already married to a woman in Tupelo who’ll collect his life insurance—unless she does something about it. Meanwhile, the cookoff heats up when a contestant is zapped by his own electric smoker, and Samantha’s dog has to be rescued by a Biker for Jesus at the Elvis Memorial McDonald’s. But when Lovie Rakestraw, one of Elvis’s junior high classmates, is found electrocuted in her whirlpool, Sam is on the killer’s trail like a hound dog.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early Struggles for Vicksburg, Timothy Smith covers the first phase of the Vicksburg campaign (October 1862–July 1863), involving perhaps the most wide-ranging and complex series of efforts seen in the entire campaign. The operations that took place from late October to the end of December 1862 covered six states, consisted of four intertwined mini-campaigns, and saw the involvement of everything from cavalry raids to naval operations in addition to pitched land battles in Ulysses S. Grant’s first attempts to reach Vicksburg. This fall/winter campaign that marked the first of the major efforts to reach Vicksburg was the epitome of the by-the-book concepts of military theory of the day. But the first major Union attempts to capture Vicksburg late in 1862 were also disjointed, unorganized, and spread out across a wide spectrum. The Confederates were thus able to parry each threat, although Grant, in his newly assumed position as commander of the Department of the Tennessee, learned from his mistakes and revised his methods in later operations, leading eventually to the fall of Vicksburg. It was war done the way academics would want it done, but Grant figured out quickly that the books did not always have the answers, and he adapted his approach thereafter. Smith comprehensively weaves the Mississippi Central, Chickasaw Bayou, Van Dorn Raid, and Forrest Raid operations into a chronological narrative while illustrating the combination of various branches and services such as army movements, naval operations, and cavalry raids. Early Struggles for Vicksburg is accordingly the first comprehensive academic book ever to examine the Mississippi Central/Chickasaw Bayou campaign and is built upon hundreds of soldier-level sources. Massive in research and scope, this book covers everything from the top politicians and generals down to the individual soldiers, as well as civilians and slaves making their way to freedom, while providing analysis of contemporary military theory to explain why the operations took the form they did.
