When she called us down for breakfast, we knew there would be homemade caramel rolls and hot cocoa waiting, just for us. In chilly weather, there was always a hearty kettle of vegetable soup or chili simmering on her stove. At dinnertime, the table overflowed with tender chicken and noodles or slow-baked pot roast, buttery mashed potatoes, brown sugar carrots (because she knew we wouldn't eat them, otherwise!) and salads, fresh-picked from her garden. Her cookie jar was filled with our favorite snickerdoodles or chocolate chip cookies, and there was always a frosted layer cake in the cake stand. So many delicious memories! From Grandma's Recipe Box is chock-full of all these recipes and more, shared by cooks like you, handed down through generations and still enjoyed today. We've included easy tips for adding down-home flavor to meals, and for making get-togethers with family & friends special. Book excerpt: This book provides teachers with practical ways of constructing lessons that will engage students and help them develop personal responsibility for their own learning. State learning standards and related core curricula require students to demonstrate what they know and understand. Students cannot learn to demonstrate their understanding if they sit passively. The authors call for constructivist practices which recognize the important role played by standards and student accountability, and which also acknowledge the practical need for lecture in an appropriate context. This book also shows the links between constructivism and differentiated instruction and other approaches to teaching and learning.

Book Synopsis Our Generations of Legacy by : Barbara Robbins
Download or read book Our Generations of Legacy written by Barbara Robbins and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legacy- Walk a mile in my shoes, live where Ive lived, dwell in my experiences, learn from my mistakes, and then decide where to go in your life. Everyone needs a role model, and for Barbara Robbins and Joshua Holsclaw, their role models are four grandmothers who founded a legacy prosperous of spirituality. Lou Watts, Emma Carswell, Callie Lail, and Bessie Lail were average Southerners; however, their lives are seen with a new perspective when examined in depth. They remained dedicated to serving the Lord and provided for their families no matter what circumstances occurred. It was these sacrifices that instilled love in the hearts of their children as they passed down valuable lessons, raised their families on morality, and allowed their lights to shine before their loved ones. Because of the Lord, these trees have firm foundations, but these womens influences make the trees blossom with beauty. Throughout the pages of this memoir, the authors examine the measures these four grandmothers took to establish their family trees, the faith passed through each generation of this lineage, and the principles of family and dedication. Youll find a mother sewing outfits by hand for her children past midnight, a leader walking several miles to church, parents doing without so their children could have Christmas gifts, and a giant of the faith remaining fervent in prayer for her loved ones. The inspiration and challenge will give every family the lens to examine their own lives and the true meaning behind family.
Download or read book Signs of Hope written by Amy Wolff and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing the world--or at least your corner of it--is easier than you think. With so much suffering in our communities and in the world, it can feel impossible to make an impact. "What good can I possibly do?" we ask. Amy Wolff, a busy mom and small business owner, often felt this way--and didn't feel qualified to connect and uplift others. But one day, after hearing about several suicides and suicide attempts in her community, she printed 20 yard signs with hopeful messages and anonymously placed them throughout her city. This small action sparked a global movement of encouragement, hope, and love, which spread to 50 states and 27 countries in just 18 months. Signs of Hope is an intimate collection of stories from Amy's personal life, as well as people impacted by the movement, about the power of hope and love in the midst of suffering. This book discusses: The drain of compassion fatigue Why we should show up imperfectly to help others How to claim hope for ourselves Practical ideas of how to respond to suffering Strategies of how to love people who are "different" Resilience when love-spreading efforts backfire How to raise a compassionate generation The science of hope Signs of Hope is your catalyst for doing something today . . . because there's no perfect time to help others. The time is now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Page | 2 I have been the recipient of a treasure chest of family heirlooms. There are old pictures, poems, genealogies, and stories. Because past generations were so faithful to preserve their family history, I felt compelled to preserve their “footprints.” My favorite heirloom is a metal crest that dates back to the 1200s. The stamp reveals a bird with writing in the Welsh language which, when translated, reads, “Faith in God makes all things right.” I have several unique things that the book contains, such as a contract with the Indians for land and a Civil War diary written by my great-grandfather. There are newspapers dated March of 1863 offering a bounty of $20,000 for the head of Lincoln. Poems were written by my grandmother depicting the emotional trauma she went through during World War II that came from my treasure chest. The stories of my uncles who were in that war one in the South Pacific and the other in Germany. There are stories of the French Huguenots, pioneers, Pilgrims, and Scotch Reformers that were imprisoned for their faith as well as stories of the devastation of the bubonic plague, both in England and in Germany. It also includes a piolet that transported the Apollo 13 astronauts. My linage contains, missionaries, preachers, and a preacher’s wife. Because former generations were faithful to preserve their history, I felt compelled to include their stories in the book, making their footprints indelible.

Download or read book Three Many Cooks written by Pam Anderson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the women behind the popular blog Three Many Cooks gather in the busiest room in the house, there are never too many cooks in the kitchen. Now acclaimed cookbook author Pam Anderson and her daughters, Maggy Keet and Sharon Damelio, blend compelling reflections and well-loved recipes into one funny, candid, and irresistible book. Together, Pam, Maggy, and Sharon reveal the challenging give-and-take between mothers and daughters, the passionate belief that food nourishes both body and soul, and the simple wonder that arises from good meals shared. Pam chronicles her epicurean journey, beginning at the apron hems of her grandmother and mother, and recounts how a cultural exchange to Provence led to twenty-five years of food and friendship. Firstborn Maggy rebelled against the family’s culinary ways but eventually found her inner chef as a newlywed faced with the terrifying reality of cooking dinner every night. Younger daughter Sharon fell in love with food by helping her mother work, lending her searing opinions and elbow grease to the grueling process of testing recipes for Pam’s bestselling cookbooks. Three Many Cooks ladles out the highs and lows, the kitchen disasters and culinary triumphs, the bitter fights and lasting love. Of course, these stories would not be complete without a selection of treasured recipes that nurtured relationships, ended feuds, and expanded repertoires, recipes that evoke forgiveness, memory, passion, and perseverance: Pumpkin-Walnut Scones, baked by dueling sisters; Grilled Lemon Chicken, made legendary by Pam’s father at every backyard cookout; Chicken Vindaloo that Maggy whipped up in a boat galley in the Caribbean; Carrot Cake obsessively perfected by Sharon for the wedding of friends; and many more. Sometimes irreverent, often moving, always honest, this collection illustrates three women’s individual and shared search for a faith that confirms what they know to be true: The divine is often found hovering not over an altar but around the stove and kitchen table. So hop on a bar stool at the kitchen island and join them to commiserate, laugh, and, of course, eat! Praise for Three Many Cooks “This beautiful book is a stirring, candid, powerful celebration of mothers, daughters, and sisters, and of family, food, and faith. The stories are relatable and real, and are woven perfectly with the time-tested, mouthwatering recipes. I loved every page, every word, and am adding this to the very small pile of books in my life that I know I’ll pick up and read again and again.”—Ree Drummond, New York Times bestselling author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks

This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Is Short – Eat Dessert First By: Robert L. Bladow Life Is Short – Eat Dessert First is more than author Robert L. Bladow’s story. From his family research, he learned that his grandfather had a story to tell but left it for him to discover. His life was full of challenges and perils that took every bit of determination for him to survive. How he survived is a lesson of determination and perseverance. His son, Robert’s father, who persisted through the Great Depression and with his career, is the example he set that had exposed Robert to many practical life skills and the experience of acting in theatre, which later allowed him to be successful at what he chose to do. Robert’s older brother, Terry, had a significant influence on him by sharing his wisdom and skills while they were growing up. Life is a challenge that can be met with determination and perseverance to gain a successful life, and if Robert’s experience helps just one person deal with that, he would be satisfied. He hopes his readers enjoy the story and have a reflection that is meaningful to them.
