Book Synopsis Social Rights and Human Welfare by : Hartley Dean
Download or read book Social Rights and Human Welfare written by Hartley Dean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential introduction to rights-based approaches in social policy, this text critically explores how social rights underpin human wellbeing. It discusses social rights as rights of citizenship in developed welfare states and as an essential component within the international human rights and human development agenda. It provides a valuable introduction for students and researchers in social policy and related applied social science, public policy, sociology, socio-legal studies and social development fields. Taking an international perspective, the first part of the book considers how social rights can be understood and critiqued in theory – discussing ideas around citizenship, human needs and human rights, collective responsibility and ethical imperatives. The second part of the book looks at social rights in practice, providing a comparative examination of their development globally, before looking more specifically at rights to livelihood, human services and housing as well as ways in which these rights can be implemented and enforced. The final section re-evaluates prevailing debates about rights-based approaches to poverty alleviation and outlines possible future directions. The book provides a comprehensive overview of social rights in theory and practice. It questions recent developments in social policy. It challenges certain dominant ideas concerning the basis of human rights. It seeks to re-frame our understanding of social rights as the articulation of human needs and presents a radical new 'post-Marshallian' theory of human rights.
Book Synopsis The Cuban Revolution as Socialist Human Development by : Henry Veltmeyer
Download or read book The Cuban Revolution as Socialist Human Development written by Henry Veltmeyer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book argues that the Cuban Revolution warrants a closer look as a model of socialist human development. A re-reading of the Cuban Revolution from this angle engages unresolved issues in the theory of socialist humanism and the notion of human development popularized by the United Nations Development Programme (i.e., predicated on capitalism). UNDP economists and other agencies of international cooperation for development give a human face to a capitalist development process that is anything but humane. Socialism in Cuba has taken a very different form (socialist human development) than it did elsewhere in the twentieth century. The Cuban Revolution's unique characteristics enabled it to survive adverse conditions - a 'near-perfect storm' - that still threaten its evolution.

Download or read book Religion and Human Security written by James K. Wellman, Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the1950s the world has witnessed a period of extraordinary religious revival in which religious political parties and non-governmental organizations have gained power around the globe. At the same time, the international community has come to focus on the challenge of promoting global human security. This groundbreaking book explores how these trends are interacting. In theoretical essays and case studies from Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, the Americas, Africa and Europe, the contributors address such crucial questions as: Under what circumstances do religiously motivated actors advance or harm human welfare? Do certain state policies tend to promote security-enhancing behavior among religious groups? The book concludes by providing important suggestions to policymakers about how to factor the influence of religion into their evaluation of a population's human security and into programs designed to improve human security around the globe.
Book Synopsis To Advance Human Welfare! by : Robert Leonard
Download or read book To Advance Human Welfare! written by Robert Leonard and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between approximately 1950 and 1968, the Ford Foundation committed itself to funding research in economics at universities and other institutions both in the United States and abroad. The Foundation designed a specific program for this purpose: Economic Development and Administration (EDA). Intending to encourage the economics discipline to solve practical problems related to economic policy, EDA over this period gave support amounting to roughly $95 million. The first section of this paper traces the development of EDA in the context of the broader aims of the Foundation. The interaction between the Foundation and the "economics community" is examined, highlighting the various interests of each group and the way in which these were reconciled when in conflict. The ultimate demise of the program is related to the changing political and social environment of the late 1960's and a largely negative assessment, by the Ford Foundation, of the ability of economics to solve emerging social problems. The paper's second section provides some reflections on the relationship between the economics profession and foundations in a more general sense, concluding that extensive support of economics, of the magnitude afforded in the above period, is unlikely to be repeated."

Download or read book One Welfare written by Rebeca Garcia Pinillos and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary and thought-provoking, this book provides a definition of the concept of One Welfare: the interconnection between animal welfare, human wellbeing and the environment. The book establishes a conceptual framework, in five sections, resulting from a three month global consultation on a draft proposal comprising nine areas. One Welfare complements the One Health and Eco Health approaches, enabling full integration of animal welfare within other disciplines; a much needed tool to help improve animal welfare, human wellbeing and environmental components and support worldwide sustainable development goals. Integrating this concept into existing projects could help to foster collaboration to improve human and animal welfare globally. This text is of interest to those working in the fields of animal and human welfare, sustainability and conservation, international development and to all those keen to extend the one health approach to animal welfare and human wellbeing.
