Book excerpt: In 1926 the Bibliographical Society published the first edition of A Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland and of English Books Printed Abroad 1475-1640. Now universally known as 'STC', it has become indispensable to historians, literary scholars, and bibligraphers, whose work involves printed sources before the Civil War. The second part of this edition was the first to be published in 1976: volume I covering A-H now completes the main text; it will be followed by a third volume, containing the addenda that ten years of use have already produced, detailed indexes of printing and booksellers, with dates and places of business, concordance with other lists and catalogues, and other supplementary material.
Book Synopsis A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 1603–1642 by : Soko Tomita
Download or read book A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 1603–1642 written by Soko Tomita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to Tomita’s A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 1558-1603, this volume provides the data for the succeeding 40 years (during the reign of King James I and Charles I) and contributes to the study of Anglo-Italian relations in literature through entries on 187 Italian books (335 editions) printed in England. The Catalogue starts with the books published immediately after the death of Queen Elizabeth I on 24 March 1603, and ends in 1642 with the closing of English theatres. It also contains 45 Elizabethan books (75 editions), which did not feature in the previous volume. Formatted along the lines of Mary Augusta Scott's Elizabethan Translations from the Italian (1916), and adopting Philip Gaskell's scientific method of bibliographical description, this volume provides reliable and comprehensive information about books and their publication, viewed in a general perspective of Anglo-Italian transactions in Jacobean and part of Caroline England.

Book Synopsis A Short-title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, & Ireland and of English Books Printed Abroad, 1475-1640 by : Alfred William Pollard
Download or read book A Short-title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, & Ireland and of English Books Printed Abroad, 1475-1640 written by Alfred William Pollard and published by London : Bibliographical Society. This book was released on 1976 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains important material not found in the original edition: an index to printers and publishers. It also contains addenda and corrigenda to the 1926 edition, and to the first two volumes of the second edition. The new Printers' and Publishers' Index has headnotes 1) giving each individual's dates of activity, 2) supplementing and in many cases correcting information in the Bibliographical Society's Dictionaries of Printers, and 3) listing addresses of British publishers in far more complete and accurate detail than available previously. There is a second index, entirely new, of places of printing other than London, including fictitious places. The addenda and corrigenda are cumulative, incorporating and occasionally revising those which appeared in the first two volumes of the revision. Information first appearing in the present volume is distinguished by a bullet and revisions of previous addenda by a second bullet so that users of STC may more easily annotate their copies of the first two volumes.

Book Synopsis Domesticating the Reformation by : Mary Hampson Patterson
Download or read book Domesticating the Reformation written by Mary Hampson Patterson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book rescues three little-known bestsellers of the English Reformation and employs them in an examination of intellectual and religious revolution. How did sixteenth-century English Protestant manuals of private devotion - often to be read aloud - stream continental theology into the domestic contexts of parish, school, and home? Patterson elucidates ideological programs presented in key texts in light of evolving patterns of public and private worship; she also considers the processes of transmission by which complex doctrinal debates were packaged for cultivating an everyday piety in a confusing age of inflammatory, politicized religion. It is in the most prosaic challenges of daily realities, that the deepest opportunities lie for experiencing the divine. Intersecting issues of piety, rhetoric, and the devotional life of the home, this book brings to life reformists' endeavors to guide popular responses to the Protestant revolution itself.
Book Synopsis A Radical's Books by : Michael Cyril William Hunter
Download or read book A Radical's Books written by Michael Cyril William Hunter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The library owned by Samuel Jeake of Rye, nonconformist and local activist, was one of the most remarkable of its time. It is of particular importance in that relatively little information has hitherto been available about the ownership of books in the English provinces, or the reading habits of intellectuals who -- like Jeake --were outside London and university circles from which most surviving libraries have come down to us. The collection of some 1500 volumes includes an extraordinary assemblage of radical pamphlets from the English Revolution alongside works of theology, literature, scholarship and science. Other books reflect astrological and magical interests, and the collection also includes a medical library. Jeake's library catalogue, published here, gives much information about titles that are now lost, about the penetration of foreign books into provincial England, and about book prices. The introduction places Jeake's collection in context, and makes a significant contribution to the history of the book in the early modern period; appendices list surviving volumes from the library and give a complete list of the Jeake manuscripts now in Rye Museum.MICHAEL HUNTER is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London; GILES MANDELBROTE is a Curator, British Collections 1501-1800, at the British Library; RICHARD OVENDEN is Deputy Head, Rare Books Division of the National Library of Scotland; NIGEL SMITH is Reader in English at the University of Oxford.
