Book excerpt: Combining experts from the medical and materials sciences, the Institute considered current concepts in medical and materials sciences as they relate to implantable prostheses in orthopedic surgical practice. The syllabus included theory and applications of materials properties, physiological function, and host response to metal and non-metal materials. Total hip prostheses are the most common orthopedic device implanted today involved in over 200,000 operations. Failures occur at the rate of 10~-40~ at ~ to 10 years. Failures are due to loosening, infection, fracture of femoral components, or destruction of the pe 1 vi c components .' All these, and other problems related to the implantation of the devices, the surgical procedures, and device pathology, were. discussed in light of current, as well as, emerging technologies and scientific knowledge. Repeatedly, scientists designing prostheses became aware of a lack of understanding of physiological phenomena associated with biocompatibility; the interchange among practising physicians, basic scientists, and pathologists at this Institute was appreciated. We thank all the contributors and participants for their effort. Thanks are also due to the personnel of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The daily routines of running the Institute were greatly facilitated by the efforts of Pedro Cuevas, M.D, Jose Gutierrez Diaz, M.D, and Dr. Hanita Kossowsky. The devoted help of Nir Kossovsky, M.D, in setting the conference and in editing this book, is sincerely appreci ated.

Book excerpt: Titanium Alloys for Biomedical Development and Applications: Design, Microstructure, Properties and Application systematically introduces basic theories and progress in the research of biomedical ß-Ti alloys achieved by researchers from different fields. It focuses on a high-strength and low elastic modulus biomedical ß-Ti alloy (TLM), etc. designed by the authors. The alloy design methods, microstructural characteristics, mechanical properties, surface treatment methods and biocompatibility of the TLM alloy are discussed in detail, along with a concise description of the medical devices made from this alloy and the application examples. This book will appeal to researchers as well as students from different disciplines, including materials science, biology, medicine and engineering fields. Fills the knowledge gap in the current research and application of newly developed biomedical ß-Ti alloys Discusses the selection principles used for proper biomedical Ti alloys for medical and dental devices Includes details on the technological data basis for the application of biomedical ß-Ti alloys with a focus on the TLM ß-Ti alloy

Book excerpt: Medical devices and surgical tools that contain micro and nanoscale features allow surgeons to perform clinical procedures with greater precision and safety while monitoring physiological and biomechanical parameters more accurately. While surgeons have started to master the use of nanostructured surgical tools in the operating room, this book addresses for the first time the impact and interaction of nanomaterials and nanostructured coatings in a comprehensive manner. Surface Engineered Surgical Tools and Medical Devices presents the latest information and techniques in the emerging field of surface engineered biomedical devices and surgical tools, and analyzes the interaction between nanotechnology, nanomaterials, and tools for surgical applications. Chapters of the book describe developments in coatings for heart valves, stents, hip and knee joints, cardiovascular devices, orthodontic applications, and regenerative materials such as bone substitutes. Chapters are also dedicated to the performance of surgical tools and dental tools and describe how nanostructured surfaces can be created for the purposes of improving cell adhesion between medical devices and the human body.

Book excerpt: Surface preparation and corrosion behavior of titanium alloys were studied; both topics deal with the formation of surface oxide films. When metals are prepared for surgical implant use, an effort is made to produce an optimum surface. Effects of the surface treatments on surface morphology, surface film composition, and structure are shown in transmission electron photomicrographs and electron diffraction patterns. Roughened surfaces were produced, and surface films of titanium oxide (TiO) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) or both occurred on some specimens. Sodium titanate (NaO . xTiO2) occurred on the specimens washed in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution.
