Book excerpt: Glaciers are massive bodies of ice that move under their own weight. They form when snow accumulates faster than ablation, and this process continues over years and centuries. It's fascinating to see the incredible amount of ice accumulated by the end of the last ice age. Learn about the glaciers in the world and how they affect our environment today. The following are some Glaciers Facts. You'll want to know them all! Glaciers have a huge impact on the landscape of the northern U.S. A single trillion-ton ice cube can change the landscape. This massive iceberg has carved out many lakes, and the entire landscape is affected by its movements. Greenland has a massive icecap and is almost covered with ice. In fact, a single ice crystal in a glacier can be the size of a baseball. While we're learning about glaciers' natural history, we're also learning about their complicated processes. As snowfall exceeds the rate of melt, glaciers begin to grow and icebergs break off. However, they must balance out their income and outgo in order to survive. If the mass balance is positive, the glacier is growing, while if it is negative, the glacier is shrinking. We'll get to see the incredible work of nature's natural engineers soon! The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is nearly 2.5 kilometers below sea level. The weight of the ice forces the land down, which is why the south of the United Kingdom has slowly risen since the last ice age. The melting ice has loosened the weight on the land. Almost one hundred thousand glaciers can be found in Alaska, where the Bering Glacier is the largest in North America at 204 km. If all land ice was destroyed, sea levels would rise by over 230 feet.

Icebergs are also increasingly seen to play key roles in past and present climate change. This book gives a comprehensive, multidisciplinary view of icebergs and their interaction with the Earth system, from the physical and biological interaction with the ocean and climate, to how iceberg detritus informs us about past Earth history. Societal and cultural aspects of icebergs are also examined, in terms of the risks and opportunities posed by icebergs in the modern world, as well as how these might develop in the future. With extensive illustrations and key links to online resources, Icebergs is a valuable reference for academic researchers and graduate students studying oceanography, cryospheric science, climatology and environmental science.

Book Synopsis Iceberg, Right Ahead! by : Stephanie Sammartino McPherson
Download or read book Iceberg, Right Ahead! written by Stephanie Sammartino McPherson and published by Millbrook Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audisee® eBooks with Audio combine professional narration and sentence highlighting to engage reluctant readers! "Iceberg, Right Ahead!" Only 160 minutes passed between the time a sailor on lookout duty uttered these chilling words and the moment when the mighty ocean liner Titanic totally disappeared into the cold, dark waters of the North Atlantic. This century-old tragedy, which took more than 1,500 lives, still captivates people in the twenty-first century. Seventy-three years separate the two major Titanic events—the 1912 sinking of the vessel and the dramatic 1985 discovery of the wreck by Robert Ballard. But additional stories about the victims, survivors, rescuers, reporters, investigators, and many others show the far-reaching effects this tragedy had on society. Award-winning author Stephanie Sammartino McPherson has collected numerous personal accounts of the event, including the knighted man who spent the rest of his life in seclusion because he was accused of dishonorable behavior in a lifeboat, the stewardess who survived two shipwrecks and a mid-ocean collision, and the New York Times executive who sent multiple reporters to meet the rescue ship, thus earning a national reputation for his newspaper. She also links the Titanic tragedy to changes in regulations worldwide. After a Senate Inquiry and a British trial attempted to assign blame for the disaster, new laws on ship safety were put in place. A group of nations also banded together to form an ice patrol, eventually leading to the formation of the U.S. Coast Guard. Even the most avid Titanic fans will learn something new as McPherson brings the reader up to date on the politics and intrigue still surrounding the wreck—including what modern science can reveal about what really happened to the ship and who was at fault. Prepare to follow the never-ending story of the Titanic into its second century.
