You may have a lot on your mind as you reunite with family and reintegrate into your community. You may also be coping with injuries you sustained in service to our nation. With the unemployment rate for veterans well above the national average, some veterans turn to the federal government to find a job. There they find a convoluted system that can be as difficult to get through as a desert trail laced with IEDs. At times irreverent, the book is written in plain language and the author calls them as he sees them just like he did while on active duty. If you are a veteran or disabled veteran this is the book for you. So grab a cup of coffee, download the book and learn what it takes to get hired by the federal government.

Book excerpt: "Setting the historical context for this book, this chapter describes the recent history of civilian veteran employment, relaying how the high military veteran unemployment rate in 2010 generated concern and reactions from the government and the public and the private sectors. It then provides examples of how government and companies worked together to improve the employment situation of military veterans through legislation, corporate hiring programs, and corporate partnerships but faced limited success because too few companies were involved. The current situation of veteran employment and retention is outlined, with examples provided of why military veterans may choose to leave civilian employment and suggestions offered to address the issues veteran employees may have in their jobs so that employers can do a better job of retaining them in their workforces"--

Book excerpt: This transition book focuses on people in the military, however, it gives the principles and concepts that apply equally to everyone, who is searching for a job. This book is designed to help you get ready for transition and the planning that should start the day you enter the military. Some of the areas discussed are family preparation and considerations, financial preparedness, figuring out what you want to do after the military, education, and certifications, and much more. In this book, you'll get an overview of the different areas one needs to consider in preparing for transition - then provide food for thought in the planning and execution of that process. Of course, you'll see how to practically apply these principles while moving through the transition. Finally, you get to see what the author learned during and after transition- things he wishes he knew before he started the process. The goal is to have a conversation with you, so don't be surprised if you find yourself asking questions throughout. The material will provoke you to think, especially when it comes to "customizing" what you read here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A business professional who is a 19-year U.S. Army combat veteran offers this one-of-a-kind book showing fellow veterans how to leverage their military experience and training to produce superior business and career results. Military training and experience provide a superb foundation for excelling in business. The executive search firm Korn Ferry discovered in a 2006 study that CEOs with military experience out-performed their civilian peers. Combat Leader to Corporate Leader: 20 Lessons to Advance Your Civilian Career outlines 20 lessons describing how veterans can apply their universal military training to succeed and excel in the business world. Combat Leader to Corporate Leader teaches Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force veterans and non-military professionals how to apply successfully the skills that have made the U.S. military successful. The book is divided into four sections and aligned with military combat planning tools: (1) understanding the company and business environment, (2) planning a robust solution, (3) rigorous execution to meet the plan's goals, and (4) improving people and process for better results. Each section offers specific examples, advice, and formats that directly address the challenge of translating military experience into business skill sets. Among other issues, the book will teach vets how to showcase military experience and value to get hired, how to apply combat experience to a career in business, how to avoid the mistakes veterans commonly make in the workplace, and how to customize and translate their own unique military experiences to their business. At the conclusion of the book, veterans and non-veterans alike will have the skills to understand, plan, execute, and improve their careers and business ventures.

Book excerpt: Eleven companies cofounded the 100,000 Jobs Mission in 2011 to promote veteran employment, with a goal of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020. The coalition has grown to over 175 companies, which have exceeded the initial goal and are now on track to hire 200,000 veterans by the end of 2014. These companies represent nearly every U.S. industry and vary in size, geographic location, and in the types of veterans they hire. Reflecting on the first three years of operation, JPMorgan Chase & Co. asked the RAND Corporation to capture the lessons and experiences from the 100,000 Jobs Mission to identify further improvements to veteran employment opportunities. RAND researchers conducted qualitative interviews with representatives of a sample of member companies, delving into the ways they recruit and hire veterans, help veterans transition into their new jobs, and manage and develop veteran employees and the value veterans bring as employees. Interviewees pointed out that veterans are most noted for their leadership skills and teamwork; for their flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment without undue stress; for their dependability, integrity, and loyalty; and for their experience working in a culturally diverse or global environment. This research also explored the challenges to hiring and employing veterans and provides recommendations to assist employers and promote veteran employment opportunities more broadly.

Book excerpt: "We are now poised as a country either to repeat the mistakes of the Vietnam era or to create the services and supports that our returning veterans deserve." This research focuses on the importance of using an integrated change management approach to bring together the civilian, corporate, and military communities to support veterans of the Global War on Terror, specifically those veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Using force field analysis methodology and original survey research, the study includes a review of the current literature on Gulf War Era veterans in the areas of the labor market, diversity, employee assistance, human resources (HR), behavioral health, disability, and career management. Survey respondents, a selected sample of highly placed officials in corporations, higher education, and the military, identified nine forces they believe have a large impact on change in corporate policies, practices, and programs related to the employment, engagement in productive work, and retention and advancement of veterans. The survey respondents also identified the seven factors they believe are most important in effecting a change in corporations' approach to employing Gulf War Era veterans. The survey examines the nine forces identified and makes concrete recommendations about what can be done to recruit, hire, and retain Gulf War Era II (GWE II) veterans, who are unique because they are more educated and more highly skilled than the veterans of all other wars. The GWE II veterans will be returning home en masse over the coming years and will face a challenging job market. Employers, labor market experts, educators, and human services professionals must be prepared to welcome these veterans home and support them as they navigate the social, political, and economic turbulence challenging our country now and in the coming years. Kathleen O. Beauchesne is a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Social Policy ad Practice, Social Impact of the Arts Project (SIAP) She received her doctorate in Social Welfare Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, and throughout her career she has directed and led employee behavioral health programs in higher education at the Johns Hopkins Institutions and for private industry.
