Mike Vardy teaches us to say "Hell yeah!" to projects. So do I recommend this book? Hell yeah!" —A.J. Jacobs, Editor at Large at Esquire magazine and bestselling author of DROP DEAD and THE YEAR OF LIVING BIBLICALLY "Mike Vardy has been the go to person for productivity tips for me over the past few years both as editor of the famous Lifehack.org and via his new site at Productivityist.com. This book is full of his best insights from years of experience of working at the very top in the online industry. I can't recommending this book enough for anyone looking to take 2013 by storm and doubling down on efficiency on any tasks they are working on. Especially his descriptive elements of connecting learnings from golfing makes it all a lot easier to grasp." —Leo Widrich, co-founder of Buffer "While I'm not a golf fan, the use of golf in this book works perfectly. Plus, if you try something from the book and it doesn't work for you, simply call a mulligan and move foward." —C.C. Chapman, co-author of the bestseller CONTENT RULES What is THE FRONT NINE? THE FRONT NINE is a guide by one of the web's leading productivity experts, former Lifehack.org Editor-in-Chief, Mike Vardy, to help you get ready, get set, and go forward with your new year, anytime you want. Taking elements from the game of golf and applying them to productivity and goal-setting, THE FRONT NINE aims to put you in a position to make a fresh start on a project, a goal, or even a deeper desire, whenever you’re ready. THE FRONT NINE is a resource that is specific in structure, yet fluid in content in that it is accessible to anyone who has an open mind. You don’t need to be a “productivityist” to wrap your head around it -- and you certainly don't need to be a golfer. You don’t need to be using a task manager – or task management system – to make it work for you (although it can help). All you need is the willingness to want to change and see things through to make THE FRONT NINE work for you.

Book excerpt: “You’re going to want to share copies of this book with your overbooked friends and colleagues, but before you do, take some time to read it yourself. Funt’s wisdom around making space is priceless.” —Seth Godin, author of The Practice Do you wish you could stop the mayhem of work and life and just take a minute? Do you sense you could contribute more if there were a little more room in the day? Does busyness deprive you and your burnt-out team of the oxygen your talents need to catch fire? Many have felt that way, yet taking a pause has seemed impossible—until now. In A Minute to Think, Juliet Funt, a globally recognized warrior in the battle against busyness, provides a powerful guide that will give you the permission, framework, and specific direction you need to do the following: Regain control of your overloaded, caffeinated, inbox-worshiping workday Liberate yourself and your teams from burnout and busywork Reclaim creativity and focus despite the chaos around you Bring thoughtfulness into designing your next work norms Tame the beast of email and escape the mire of meetings Find your precious minute to think You’re not alone in your yearning for freedom from constant reactivity. The global workforce today is so fried that it belongs in the food court of a county fair. We’re relentlessly behind the curve, dousing fires everywhere, and our 3 a.m. insomnia provides the only unscheduled thinking time of the day. What we need reinserted in our lives is the missing element of white space—short periods of open, unscheduled time that, when recaptured, change the very nature of work. White space is the stepping back, the strategic pause, the oxygen that allows the sparks of our efforts to catch fire. White space has the power to radically—and simply—reinvent the way we approach work in this maxed-out, post-COVID 21st-century world. With Juliet’s memorable stories, easy-to-use tools, and razor-sharp instruction, she carves for us an escape route from the overwhelming amount of low-value tasks and the daily avalanche of e-mails, meetings, decks, and reports. Using research, client stories, and a relatable voice, Juliet shows all of us how to reclaim time for thinking and make room for what truly matters. Whether you are an individual trying to build a more sane and humane flow of daily work, a team that wants new levels of efficiency and effectiveness, or an entire organization changing your culture toward thoughtfulness, this book will lead you there.

His unscrupulous aunt avails herself of the opportunity and manages to inherit the whole of his grandfather’s wealth, leaving him without a penny to live on. Being fond of sports cars and speed driving he is delighted to see on T.V. a science-fiction ‘time craft’ that can go faster than light. While apprenticed as a mechanic in a garage, he is fired for damaging a client’s car by driving faster than normal in trying it. He works as a salesman in a bookshop, becomes a self-taught philosopher among books, but soon has to lose his new job because he makes love to a female client inside the shop during the absence of his employer. Meanwhile his aunt falls and dies on the steps of the grandfather’s house she has usurped. Being the next of kin and the only relative of the old woman he inherits all the fortune she has stolen. Some of her servants charge him with killing her. Also he is suspected of having committed a number of crimes, including the use of carbombs to blow up schools and hospitals. His girl friend, too, is in trouble: she is accused by her brother-in-law of having murdered her husband. Both lovers take to flight on what his imagination saw as a ‘time craft’. The outcome: a tragedy he could neither forecast nor help.

This mysterious adventure begins in the life of a young boy who discovers the location of a treasure worth more by far than any pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. As he grows up he wonders if its not just the mad ramblings of his grandfathers legacy. He deciphers the code and finds a sentient device that can show him all facets of any moment in time. Not a time machine but something far more profound, he views prehistory before Eden up to now and beyond as well as his eventful last day. The secrets it exposes and the event horizons it displays go beyond the distant reaches of space and time as we find the essence of truth imbedded in a fictional account. Its amazing revelations and significant implications can help mankind forge ahead into the unsettled future. We uncover among other things who the ETs really are, their leader and followers, as well as their purpose here on earth. Many other historical facts are not as they appear to be and we find blatant unexpected flaws in our most advanced sciences and theology. As he matures and handles this awesome responsibility, it transports us on an epoch journey we will never forget. The setting of the book takes place in a quaint little town in Texas between Brownwood and Cisco. It traverses back and forth from there to Dallas with pivotal moments in Seoul, Korea. Book excerpt: Born in 1922, Charles Austin Sherman has written a book about his experiences that few people can ever claim! His mother was a famous American actress of the time. As a child he lived in Manhattan and summered on Long Island. After his parents divorce, his mother met and married Colonel John Bigelow Dodge, an American-educated British citizen who saved her life while she was swimming and was caught in a rogue current. Dodge (Steve McQueen starred as Col. Dodge in the movie, The Great Escape), was a war hero and a good friend of Winston Churchill. John Dodge moved his new family to London where they were to stay. And so the stage was set for meeting famous people and history makers. People who cross the pages of this book include: Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Herman Goering, Tito, Mussolinis son-in-law, Ernest Hemingway, Marlene Dietrich, General George C. Marshall, King Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson, and Eva Peron. Anyone who is interested in the period and in the wars that tore nations apart will find this personal account to be fascinating reading. Mr. Sherman continues to live a charmed life in Tampa, Florida.

Book excerpt: Darryl Whitesmith was engaged upon a new line of research at the Horological Central Institute. He was familiar with the famous saying of Minkowski: "From henceforth space in itself and time in itself sink to mere shadows and only a kind of union of the two preserves an independent existence." But he had no idea to what extent that saying would be borne upon him. It was difficult for Darryl's mind to make the transition from subjective to objective time, but once that transition had been made there was no turning back. It began as a simple experiment, an experiment which concerned space-time, relativity and the four dimensional continuum. Whitemith's first indication that something was wrong was when the clock on the wall raced backwards in a blur of speed to fast to follow. The laboratory faded, day and night blended into a welter of greyness. He was back in the Jurassic Age - but not for long. The machine was still dragging him back into the remote epochs of the Past...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from 167 examples of decorative needlework—primarily samplers and quilts from 114 collections across the United States—made by individual women aged forty years and over between 1820 and 1860, this exquisitely illustrated book explores how women experienced social and cultural change in antebellum America. The book is filled with individual examples, stories, and over eighty fine color photographs that illuminate the role that samplers and needlework played in the culture of the time. For example, in October 1852, Amy Fiske (1785–1859) of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, stitched a sampler. But she was not a schoolgirl making a sampler to learn her letters. Instead, as she explained, “The above is what I have taken from my sampler that I wrought when I was nine years old. It was w[rough]t on fine cloth [and] it tattered to pieces. My age at this time is 66 years.” Situated at the intersection of women’s history, material culture study, and the history of aging, this book brings together objects, diaries, letters, portraits, and prescriptive literature to consider how middle-class American women experienced the aging process. Chapters explore the physical and mental effects of “old age” on antebellum women and their needlework, technological developments related to needlework during the antebellum period and the tensions that arose from the increased mechanization of textile production, and how gift needlework functioned among friends and family members. Far from being solely decorative ornaments or functional household textiles, these samplers and quilts served their own ends. They offered aging women a means of coping, of sharing and of expressing themselves. These “threads of time” provide a valuable and revealing source for the lives of mature antebellum women. Publication of this book was made possible in part through generous funding from the Coby Foundation, Ltd and from the Quilters Guild of Dallas, Helena Hibbs Endowment Fund.

Book excerpt: All praise belongs only to Allah the Lord of hosts, thanks to His permission and mercy we are still given the opportunity to live the rest of our lives filled with His infinite gifts and sometimes we are rarely grateful, especially the gift of time and opportunity given to us after the gifts of faith and Islam given to us. Prayers and greetings may still be poured out to the great Prophet Muhammad (Peace and salutation be upon him), the prophet of the last days, the prophet of humanity who has taught us how to use and manage time in living life to be happy on earth and in the hereafter get heaven. I translated this book initially as an interest in psychology and in Arabic literature. After I read some of the books of the late Dr. Ibrahim Al Faki, I am of the view that his works are suitable for consumption by non-Arabic people. Several works have been translated by Zaman publishers into Indonesian language including Quwwat Al Tafkir. The book that is in front of this dear reader is a book that thoroughly explores the importance of managing time. The author uses a practical point of view that is easy to understand and understood by all circles. He gave concrete examples from the experiences of great people in the world including his own. In this book, you will be taught how to change our paradigm towards wrong times, how to use time as effectively as possible, and what are the things that prevent time that we should stay away from, as well as other important things that you will encounter. Hopefully this translation effort will be a little contribution that can change our mistaken paradigm about the importance of time. In this translation, of course, there are many shortcomings, therefore I am eagerly awaiting criticism and suggestions on the shortcomings of this translation both in terms of diction or grammar that is not quite right.
