Book excerpt: When Jim Keaton learns that his brother Billy has died and has left him an inheritance, Jim leaves his home in Del Rio, Texas, a sleepy border town along the Rio Grande River, and travels to Denver. He hears about his brothers dealings with the diamond fields and sets out to investigate. Jim finds himself settling into the corner where Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming meet. While looking for the diamond field, he runs into hardheaded Ed Cole, a man set in his ways who uses public ground for sheep grazing. Befriending Cole places Jim in the middle of a nasty range dispute that could become deadly at any moment. Suspicion arises when Jim recognizes Tom Horn, a former Indian scout but now a range detective with a reputation for eliminating rustlers without a trial. Horn is working on Cold Spring Mountain masquerading as a man named James Hicks. When men start dying, blame is placed on Horn. Only Jim knows the truth, and hes not sure he can or wants to handle that burden.

Book excerpt: If you want your startup to succeed, you need to understand why startups fail. “Whether you’re a first-time founder or looking to bring innovation into a corporate environment, Why Startups Fail is essential reading.”—Eric Ries, founder and CEO, LTSE, and New York Times bestselling author of The Lean Startup and The Startup Way Why do startups fail? That question caught Harvard Business School professor Tom Eisenmann by surprise when he realized he couldn’t answer it. So he launched a multiyear research project to find out. In Why Startups Fail, Eisenmann reveals his findings: six distinct patterns that account for the vast majority of startup failures. • Bad Bedfellows. Startup success is thought to rest largely on the founder’s talents and instincts. But the wrong team, investors, or partners can sink a venture just as quickly. • False Starts. In following the oft-cited advice to “fail fast” and to “launch before you’re ready,” founders risk wasting time and capital on the wrong solutions. • False Promises. Success with early adopters can be misleading and give founders unwarranted confidence to expand. • Speed Traps. Despite the pressure to “get big fast,” hypergrowth can spell disaster for even the most promising ventures. • Help Wanted. Rapidly scaling startups need lots of capital and talent, but they can make mistakes that leave them suddenly in short supply of both. • Cascading Miracles. Silicon Valley exhorts entrepreneurs to dream big. But the bigger the vision, the more things that can go wrong. Drawing on fascinating stories of ventures that failed to fulfill their early promise—from a home-furnishings retailer to a concierge dog-walking service, from a dating app to the inventor of a sophisticated social robot, from a fashion brand to a startup deploying a vast network of charging stations for electric vehicles—Eisenmann offers frameworks for detecting when a venture is vulnerable to these patterns, along with a wealth of strategies and tactics for avoiding them. A must-read for founders at any stage of their entrepreneurial journey, Why Startups Fail is not merely a guide to preventing failure but also a roadmap charting the path to startup success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequestered within the heart of a cosmopolitan city is an exotic world—a place where diamonds, astronomically priced, are bought and sold on the strength of a handshake, and business disputes are resolved according to ancient Jewish principles of arbitration. Yet it is also a modern industry facing the same fundamental global changes affecting all businesses today. In Diamond Stories, Renée Rose Shield leads us into the unexamined realm of wholesale diamond traders in New York. Related to several well-respected traders, she had unprecedented access to a society normally closed to outside inquiry. Here she deftly blends her personal relationship and her anthropological training to provide an insightful exploration of this tradition-bound industry, the new challenges it faces, and the ways both industry and individuals adapt to and endure change.Shield begins with a fascinating history of diamond mining, combining the story of the De Beers cartel, the role of Jews in the trade, and the part diamonds have played both in war and liberation. Throughout, she incorporates commentary by current diamond traders. Succeeding chapters explore the evolving nature of both the global trade and the New York diamond district. Shield takes a close look at the increasingly complex ethnic makeup of the district, illuminates the rarely documented work done by women, chronicles the resilient system of arbitration, and reveals the ways in which many traders work well into their eighties and nineties. Their long lives of work, cushioned by the trade's social environment, offer hints for successful aging in general.

I am a scientist from the planet Vinydia...not a toy! Luckily, I met two young brothers who have helped me explore and have so far managed to keep me a secret. It hasn’t been easy for them, since my enthusiasm led to a few close calls. Now the boys face the possibility of having some of my Vinydian friends join me on Earth in the bodies of other plush toys. This might complicate things. You see, I have a plan to improve the lives of everyone on my home planet. All I need are diamonds. Sounds complicated, I know, but my plan is fool proof. It involves stowaway air travel to Arkansas, camping, clandestine mining, and, of course, good food. Simple really! What could possibly go wrong? Yours truly, Doctor S.

Book excerpt: The novel is set in Yellowknife in 1995 and the diamond fields in the NWT in 1995. The city is diamond-mad. The large mine at Ekati is nearing competition and dozens of persecutors are in the field. Everyone had friends or relatives in the field, or had just returned themselves, and everyone thought that they had the inside story. David Baxter, a Yellowknife citizen, flies a B-737 for Canada North. He shares a condo with his girlfriend, Marie Alden, who works in a Cutting Plant where diamonds are cut, shaped and polished. When his father dies David helps his mother with a huge sale prior to selling the family home. Below a workbench he discovers a tin box with his grandfather's flying stuff - he was a bush pilot - including a log of flights. The log is quoted in full. The last entry describes taking, and bringing out, a prospector from a northern lake where he had found diamond indicators. Baxter discovers that no claim had ever been filed around the lake. He hires a prospector for two summer months to file the claims. In the winter, Baxter raises money via a share offering for the next summer's work. Walter Johnson, from Hamilton, is an ex-military M.P. with an unsavory background. He is hired by De Beers of London Security division to go to Sierra Leone to buy diamonds. After some time there he gets malaria and is sent to a sanitarium in Alberta to recover. Then he is sent to Yellowknife to open an office for De Beers. Baxter's activities come to his attention and he is determined to acquire the claim at lake Pellatt for De Beers. When Baxter's prospector retunes to Yellowknife for the next summer his is murdered by Johnson, without the consent of De Beers in London. Marie, n the Internet, finds another prospector who takes a team to the lake. The rogue agent tries to sabotage the helicopter taking a drill rig to the claim by placing a bomb on board. The attempt fails. The drilling at Lake Pellatt is showing strong signs of diamonds. Still determined to sabotage the operation, Johnson tries to destroy the drill rig at the claim. This attempt fails. The drilling continues and Kimberlite chutes are found; the site is rich in diamonds.
