Book excerpt: Dean Barclay had nothing to do with my decision to flee my old life, but he is 100 percent of the reason I vowed to never look back. I’ve never forgotten how it felt to follow Dean—dangerous, daring, determined—away from the crowd and climb into his beat-up old Trans Am. I was sixteen and gloriously alive for the first time. When I felt his hand cover my leg and move upward, it was over. I was his. Forever. Until I left. Him, my mom, and the trailer park. Without so much as a goodbye. Now Dean’s back, crashing uninvited into my carefully cultivated, neat little lawyerly life. Eight years behind bars have turned him rougher and bigger—and more intense than any man I’ve ever met. I can’t deny him anything…and that just might end up costing me everything. Time Served: Book #1: Time Served Book #2: In Her Defense Book #3: The Good Fight

Book excerpt: Alexander Coull writes when he always heard the veteran officers state they should have wrote a book, and it didnt take long before he understood what these officers were talking about and why. It wasnt long before all the family and friends wanted to know the storiesthe real stories. He believes he cant tell the story without being real. Nothing in this book is created, made up, or enhanced to keep you turning the page. He will take you through his twenty-five years of service from beginning until the endfrom high profile inmates to incidents that will keep you reading. Some incidents may seem off the wall, some hard to handle, some hard to read, some brash language, but he adds a touch of humor to lighten up these stories. This is a nasty world full of disease, filth, inmates with addictions, inmate rights, and if it dont get any worse, its politics. There is harsh language, but its the world of jails and prisons that youre entering when you open this book. This book is not the television show we turn to; its the real deal, and let him bring you behind the walls and understand how this will change you as a person.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to everyone that's going through something whether it be family problems or drug problems or job problems or just life in general. I'm hoping to reach individuals out there that aren't afraid to admit that life isn't easy. We all have obstacles in life that we have to overcome. Don't ever think that you are the only one that's going through whatever it is that you are going through, ever. I've been through many obstacles and going through them made me realize that I'm a very strong person. Cause I think the average person probably would have given up by now. See it's not about how many times you get knocked down, it's about how many times you get up. Never waddle in your problems to long that you forget the big picture. The main goal that you are trying to accomplish. That's what I always did I stayed focused on the main goal and that's what drove me to overcome whatever is was that I was going through at that particular time. Of course I've made a lot of mistakes that's a part of life, cause if we don't make mistakes how can we ever learn anything new. If we think we know it all we'll never learn. I've driven trucks for a lot of years and every time I got behind the wheel I learned something new. See that's what made me the great truck that I was in the industry. I learned from my many mistakes. When I was young I joined a gang simply because I wanted to fit in with my homies but as time progressed it became more of a family. See we took oaths and believed what we stood for in this world. We stood on that very firmly but as time went on it was like some of this new generation wasn't standing on some of the principles. I myself violated a few times in life. But my violations were mostly hurting myself and not my fellow brother. It's just like any other organization you have to be loyal in order to make it work. During the course of my addiction I got a chance to see how people treat you differently when they found out that your addicted to drugs. My friends and family was not the same with me, it was as if I had stepped into a twilight zone. The welcome's were not the same, the hugs were not the same. The I'm just checking on you phone calls stopped coming. See now you're and outcast we don't really want to be affiliated with you anymore brother, friend, cousin or uncle. Now you get to see the real them, so in a way it's a blessing cause you know how they truly are now. The mask has been taken off from your transgressions. So count it all joy. Don't be mad just be glad that you found out sooner than later. I always tried to keep my head up during these times cause I always new and believed that one day it would get better for me. I couldn't go anywhere but up from were I was in life so that was a plus. So don't kick yourself in the head to much for your mistakes and downfalls because God don't make mistakes. It's their lost if they choose to not want you in their life anymore. You stay positive and keep going and don't quit! I'm a firm believer that our children are our future. I don't have any children myself not yet anyways but I truly believe that they are out future. So we have to be mindful of our actions as adults cause they're always watching. I remember being a child and that's what I did, I watched my parents and tried to mimic what the where doing in life. So I want to try to stop some of this gang violence in America. Most of our youth are getting locked up are already locked up cause they have done what they see their fathers do or their uncles do or their cousins do it's a cycle. These days I try to be a positive roll model as much as I can, nobody's perfect like I said as much as I can especially when I know some young man or young woman are watching. I try to get employment and represent a law abiding citizen as much as I can cause now a days that's pretty much the best way to go. Try not to be a statistic and get caught up in the system is what I'm stressing cause if you do life will be harder than it already is, for real. So I put God first and let everything else just fall into place. If you do that He is in control and not you, so take it from me a guy that's made a ton of mistakes in life. It's much better when He is in control, believe that! So hopefully this book will encourage someone or someone's to stay encouraged and keep up the good fight. Cause in the end you'll be a winner just like me, God bless!

Book excerpt: My story is told through a fictional character, Noah - a boy who, for all his troubles, just wants to be normal. But at the age of twenty, Noah is in jail for the murder of his father. Mrs. Sheridan, his prison therapist, encourages Noah to write down the dark thoughts that pound through his brain on a daily basis. As he anxiously awaits his sentencing, he begins to write about events in his life that have led to his current situation. Noah's story is presented through his writing and a series of interviews with his therapist. It is filled with broken families, terrible choices and ugly truths as he encounters horrific physical abuse and mental abuse by those entrusted with his care. But it is also redemptive, as Noah rediscovers the grace, love and peace that ultimately saves his soul, and the people that helped him along the way.My name is Blake Kibler and I have been a teacher of children with learning disabilities for almost a decade now. When I first started writing this book it was meant to reveal some of the turmoil that my students had gone through in their lives, but it turned into something else. It turned out to be more about me and the struggles I encountered throughout my own life. My father murdered someone that was close to me when I was younger, and it affected me horribly. Writing this book allowed me to face my demons and eventually gave me the strength to forgive my father whom I haven't talked to in years. This book is mostly based on true stories from my own life but is also inspired by some of the stories I encountered as a teacher.

Book excerpt: “If you’re looking for a gritty story with a lot of heat (and I mean a lot) and real characters, I’d definitely recommend Time Served.”—DearAuthor.com Julianna Keyes’s entire Time Served trilogy available now! Time Served I’ve never forgotten how it felt to follow Dean Barclay—dangerous, daring, determined—away from the crowd and climb into his beat-up old Trans Am. I was sixteen and gloriously alive for the first time. I was his. Forever. Until I left. Him, my mom, and the trailer park. Without so much as a goodbye. Now Dean’s back, crashing uninvited into neat little lawyerly life. Eight years behind bars have turned him rougher and bigger—and more sexually demanding than any man I’ve ever met. I can’t deny him anything…and that just might end up costing me everything. In Her Defense Caitlin Dufresne has never loved anyone as much as she loves winning. A ruthless fifth-year associate at an elite Chicago firm, she’s on the fast track to partner…until a stupid, serious error enrages her bosses. Caitlin’s continued refusal to share work—or credit—lands her a forced two-week vacation. When she meets Eli Grant, head of the firm’s IT department, Caitlin knows the overgrown frat boy isn’t her type. But too much alcohol and a very public game of Truth or Dare turn into a dirty, breathless one-night stand. Which turns into a (mostly naked) two-week fling. Which turns into something that makes Caitlin incredibly nervous, despite the great sex. The Good Fight I was born a fighter. You had to be, to survive in Camden. Lucky for me, I loved it. Until one night things went too far and I almost lost my ticket out. I went to college. Got a degree. A job on Wall Street. Yet I still wasn’t smart enough to stay away. So now I’m back. And it’s just as bad as I remember. Enter Dr. Susan Jones. She’s brilliant, she’s sexy and she’s a pain in my ass. She wants to hook up, get off, go home. She doesn’t have time for a thug from Camden. But she keeps coming back. FREE BONUS STORY INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME! That schooling proved useful when it became time to avenge the murder of his younger brother and end the ongoing abuse of his little sister. Dane retaliated the only way the corrupt government of Atoka County understood. He called it justice, but those not acquainted with Atoka will probably call it revenge. In the following years nothing else seemed to matter anymore...until the night his wife Lydia called the F.B.I. Dane had broken rule one. ""The only hard and fast rule to the perfect murder is not to tell anyone."" Now he must call upon every bit of his mental stability, strength, and knowledge of violent prison life to survive. Vengeance cuts both ways.

Book excerpt: A "persuasive and essential" (Matthew Desmond) work that will forever change how we look at life after prison in America through Miller's "stunning, and deeply painful reckoning with our nation's carceral system" (Heather Ann Thompson). Each year, more than half a million Americans are released from prison and join a population of twenty million people who live with a felony record. Reuben Miller, a chaplain at the Cook County Jail in Chicago and now a sociologist studying mass incarceration, spent years alongside prisoners, ex-prisoners, their friends, and their families to understand the lifelong burden that even a single arrest can entail. What his work revealed is a simple, if overlooked truth: life after incarceration is its own form of prison. The idea that one can serve their debt and return to life as a full-fledge member of society is one of America's most nefarious myths. Recently released individuals are faced with jobs that are off-limits, apartments that cannot be occupied and votes that cannot be cast. As The Color of Law exposed about our understanding of housing segregation, Halfway Home shows that the American justice system was not created to rehabilitate. Parole is structured to keep classes of Americans impoverished, unstable, and disenfranchised long after they've paid their debt to society. Informed by Miller's experience as the son and brother of incarcerated men, captures the stories of the men, women, and communities fighting against a system that is designed for them to fail. It is a poignant and eye-opening call to arms that reveals how laws, rules, and regulations extract a tangible cost not only from those working to rebuild their lives, but also our democracy. As Miller searchingly explores, America must acknowledge and value the lives of its formerly imprisoned citizens. Book excerpt: "I am inclined to call this the last chapter, but how can an autobiography have a final chapter? At best, it can only be a penultimate one; nor can it be given a rounded-off conclusion, as is possible in a work of fiction." So begins the last chapter of My Days, the only memoir from R. K. Narayan, hailed as "India's most notable novelist and short-story writer" by the New York Times Book Review. In his usual winning, humorous style, R. K. Narayan shares his life story, beginning in his grandmother's garden in Madras with his ferocious pet peacock. As a young boy with no interest in school, he trains grasshoppers, scouts, and generally takes part in life's excitements. Against the advice of all, especially his commanding headmaster father, the dreaming Narayan takes to writing fiction, and one of his pieces is accepted by Punch magazine (his "first prestige publication"). Soon his life includes bumbling British diplomats, curious movie moguls, evasive Indian officials, eccentric journalists, and "the blind urge" to fall in love. R. K. Narayan's larger-than-life perception of the human comedy is at once acute and forgiving, and always true to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people in jail have not been convicted of a crime. Instead, they have been accused of a crime and cannot afford to post the bail amount to guarantee their freedom until trial. Punishing Poverty examines how the current system of pretrial release detains hundreds of thousands of defendants awaiting trial. Tracing the historical antecedents of the US bail system, with particular attention to the failures of bail reform efforts in the mid to late twentieth century, the authors describe the painful social and economic impact of contemporary bail decisions. The first book-length treatment to analyze how bail reproduces racial and economic inequality throughout the criminal justice system, Punishing Poverty explores reform efforts, as jurisdictions begin to move away from money bail systems, and the attempts of the bail bond industry to push back against such reforms. This accessibly written book gives a succinct overview of the role of pretrial detention in fueling mass incarceration and is essential reading for researchers and reformers alike.
