Book excerpt: I finished my psychoanalysis in 1991. It took about six years. Psychoanalysis was hard work, and I always imagined that finishing would feel like graduation—a cause for celebrating. I certainly felt pride at having faced my darkest fears. At times I thought of analysis as a graduate degree in self-knowledge. In some ways leaving T. (the first letter of my therapist’s last name) felt like when I left Memphis, my home town, and went a thousand miles northeast to college. I often said that I was relieved to be leaving my family—and 25 year later my analyst—to become independent. But in both cases I was afraid and at times homesick. This is a book about the first 15 months of my psychoanalysis. This book covers what T. called the “material” of my analysis—basically my life story. But it is also about the evolution of my relationship with T. My vision of my personal history changed radically in the course of analysis. But most of these changes were produced not by the ritual telling and retelling of events from my life but rather from the feelings I developed for T. For those who are considering seeking help from a therapist, I hope this account will give you the courage to make the plunge. For those people already in therapy, the purpose of this book is to offer encouragement. No matter how difficult or complicated your life may seem, it is possible to change things for the better. And for practicing therapists, and men and women training to become therapists, I hope this book helps you better understand your patients’ vulnerability and the tremendous power for good you have for the people who come to you for help.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this pioneering work by Budd Hopkins was the first focused study of an enigma that would come to captivate the world and challenge our understanding of the universe. The influence of Missing Time was such that its title is now deeply embedded into the lexicon of UFO studies-synonymous with that most controversial and troubling of topics: alien abduction. At the time of its writing, Hopkins could not have predicted the impact of Missing Time, not only within UFOlogy, but in popular culture worldwide. The facts, stories, and theories presented herein laid the foundation for the first mainstream debates surrounding reports of human encounters with small, grey-skinned entities-non-human beings with hypnotic black eyes who came silently in the night for their own mysterious purposes. These vivid descriptions as documented by Hopkins would trigger buried memories worldwide in people from all walks of life-to the extent that the so-called "Greys" now represent the dominant cultural imagining of an alien lifeform. Missing Time is a comparative study of individuals distinct from one another in their life circumstances, separated by geography, but connected by their shared experience of a disturbing mystery with profound implications. An essential addition to the library of any serious scholar of the anomalous, and of all who dare to explore the physical, psychological, and spiritual extremities of human experience.

Book excerpt: Ever since The Authors imprisoned Father Notion in the Moon, the task of completing the unwritten novel Tetragrammar has fallen to the writer known as Seven. But recording this elusive book has proven far more difficult than Seven imagined. Being tortured with an existential writers block, Seven must also deal with older, primordial forces, something absurd and circle-shaped eating away at his sanity. After a rejected proposal and the wrath of his muse, Fable, Seven discovers the dangers of a writers drive for perfection. While The Authors and Their Dynasties plot against him, Seven will understand some stories must never go unwritten, that Tetragrammar is his last chance at knotting the plot holes in his life. But what will its completion ultimately mean? As Seven faces adversaries such as rubber devils and bag-headed saints, Tetragrammar becomes a surreal exploration on the nature of inspiration, writing, and the dangers of creating art. Ultimately, Seven must rise from the pages of his own fiction, but will his journey usher in an age of enlightenment or an eternity of madness? Can he uncover a truth more real on the Outer Page?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children and teenagers refuse to attend school or have anxiety-related difficulties remaining in classes for an entire day. School refusal behavior can contribute to a child's academic, social, and psychological problems, impact a child's chances for future educational, financial, and personal success, and significantly affect family functioning. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be a highly effective treatment for youth who exhibit this behavior. The third edition of When Children Refuse School, Therapist Guide, provides an updated multi-tiered approach model that can be used to effectively address the main types of school refusal behavior. The Guide introduces new material on very severe and chronic cases of problematic absenteeism, including alternative educational avenues and expansion of manual procedures, for children and adults. This manual includes tools for assessing a child's reasons for school refusal behavior and is based on a functional, prescriptive model. It presents well-tested techniques arranged by function to tailor treatment to a child's particular characteristics. Each treatment package also contains a detailed discussion of special topics pertinent to treating youths with school refusal behavior, such as medication, panic attacks, and being teased. A corresponding workbook is also available for parents, who often play an important part in a child's recovery. This comprehensive program is an invaluable resource for clinicians treating school refusal behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your organization needs to conduct and analyze at least one high-risk process per year to comply with the JCAHO's Improving Organization Performance standard PI.3.20. The Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a proactive process that helps you comply with this standard. It allows you to reduce risk-in a process, system, and ultimately your organization-so you can protect both patients and staff from the danger of medical errors before they occur. Your one-stop guide to conducting FMEAs Unfortunately, hospitals across the country continue to struggle with the practicality of this process and are unable to translate theory into reality. The good news? Our new book Failure Modes and Effects Analysis: Building Safety into Everyday Practice will walk you step-by-step through the FMEA process by using case studies that encompass the most problematic areas: blood transfusions, medication use, patient suicide, wrong-site surgery, and delay in treatment. Taking your FMEA to the next level Many of our customers who purchased our best-selling book, Step-by-Step Guide to Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, published in May 2002, learned the best way to conduct an FMEA. This new book takes this PI process to the next level by providing in-depth case studies, real examples, and practical tools! We've done the work for you by studying how other organizations have analyzed their own high-risk areas using an FMEA, and providing you with this information in an easy-to-read case study format. Sample FMEAs, charts, and tools! You'll receive tools including sample FMEAs, flowcharts of each process, and tables to indicate your risk-reduction efforts. The sample FMEAs highlight the potential failure modes and demonstrate how to rate the likelihood of each error, the severity of the outcome, and how to prioritize your improvement efforts to prevent medical errors. Take a look below to see how each sample FMEA will help you with your FMEA process

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the developing field of Work Disability Prevention. Work disability does not only involve occupational disorders originating from the work or at the workplace, but addresses work absenteeism originating from any disorder or accident. This topic has become of primary importance due to the huge compensation costs and health issues involved. For employers it is a unique burden and in many countries compensation is not even linked to the cause of the disorder. In the past twenty years, studies have accumulated which emphasize the social causes of work disability. Governments and NGOs such as the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have produced alarming reports on the extent of this problem for developed and developing countries. However, no comprehensive book is presently available to help them address this emerging field where new knowledge should induce new ways of management.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, Singapore has advanced rapidly towards becoming a both a global city-state and a key nodal point in the international economic sphere. These developments have caused us to reassess how we understand this changing nation, including its history, population, and geography, as well as its transregional and transnational experiences with the external world. This collection spans several disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and draws on various theoretical approaches and methodologies in order to produce a more refined understanding of Singapore and to reconceptialize the challenges faced by the country and its peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic logic of preventive diplomacy is unassailable. Act early to prevent disputes from escalating; reduce tensions that could lead to war; deal with today's conflicts before they become tomorrow's crises. Yet as we look at the record of these first years of the post-Cold War era, it is quite mixed. There have been some preventive diplomacy successes and opportunities that have been seized by major powers and international organizations to help preserve and protect the peace. But there also have been other opportunities that have been missed, with some of the century's most deadly conflicts the result. This study examines ten major post-Cold War cases including Croatia-Bosnia, Rwanda, the Baltics, Russia-Ukraine, Macedonia, and North Korea_to assess the key factors contributing to both the success and failure of preventive diplomacy. The method of case study analysis employed is based on the work of Alexander L. George. Authors include both leading academics and prominent policy officials with first-hand knowledge.

Book excerpt: This book relates some of our experiences during 30 years as foster parents. The reality of what these children endured before and after placement in the foster care system is heartbreaking. After all these years, my husband Ron and I cling stubbornly to our belief that time and man can change, but God and truth will not.My goal is to inform the public, about the foster care system. I hope to sound the alarm loud and clear, that the current foster care system is not working. I want to bring attention to the powerless children, within the system, being tossed about in the waves of loophole laws, uninformed policy makers, non-committed decision-makers, and non-motivated and often disinterested birth parents. Court mandated and enforced accountability must take place at all levels involved!
