Book Synopsis Scattering in the Time Domain from Submerged Elastic Shells at Coincidence Frequencies by :
Download or read book Scattering in the Time Domain from Submerged Elastic Shells at Coincidence Frequencies written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is known that when scattering from elastic shells, a large resonance is produced at frequencies corresponding to values in which the flexural phase velocity is roughly equal to the speed of sound in the fluid. A systematic analysis indicates that the large response is due mainly to water born waves (labeled A waves) which have narrow half-widths and manifest themselves as pronounces spikes in the form function as well as weaker flexural resonances (labeled AO) which have rather larger half-widths and produce an envelop effect due to overlapping resonances over a broad frequency range. These results are analyzed within the context of a new time domain resonance scattering theory and are shown to produce characteristic transient return signals. From these signals it is possible to calculate both the half-width of the A waves as well as their group velocities.
Book Synopsis Underwater Scattering and Radiation by : Allan D. Pierce
Download or read book Underwater Scattering and Radiation written by Allan D. Pierce and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater Scattering and Radiation describes the relevant theoretical foundations of underwater scattering and radiation. Acoustic scattering from elastic solids is discussed, and variational formulations in acoustic radiation and scattering are presented. Surface waves and quasi-cylindrical modes are also explored, along with the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral corollaries. Comprised of two chapters, this volume begins with a comprehensive account of scattering by elastic objects, focusing on the classic idealized shapes of spheres and infinite cylinders. The reader is introduced to important concepts such as normal modes, the S-matrix, and the T-matrix as well as resonances, whispering gallery modes, Franz modes, and Stoneley waves. Subsequent sections describe methods for treating scattering by elastic bodies of more general shapes. The T-matrix formalism is discussed and then applied to spheroidal scatterers and finite cylinders. The second chapter analyzes how variational principles can be used in acoustics, with the choice of topics directed toward applications to underwater acoustic radiation and scattering. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Book Synopsis T-Matrix Analysis of Acoustic Wave Scattering from Thin Elastic Shells by : V. V. Varadan
Download or read book T-Matrix Analysis of Acoustic Wave Scattering from Thin Elastic Shells written by V. V. Varadan and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress has been made in the study of acoustic wave scattering by elastic obstacles immersed in water using the T-matrix approach. It is understood, that in problems of interest to the Navy, scattered field data is required for long, thin bodies of revolution whose wall thickness is very small compared to the wavelength of the incident wave but whose overall dimensions are comparable and often larger than the wavelength of the incident wave. This project was begun to precisely address such problems, taking into account and exploiting the thinness of the shell. We propose to use shell theory equations rather than the full elasticity equations in region I in order to avoid some of the complications. Shell theory reduces the partial differential equations in three coordinates to a higher order equation in two coordinates. All description of the displacement and stress fields is made with respect to a reference surface in the shell. Now, it is no longer necessary to invoke integral representations to describe the elastic field in this region. One extracts from the shell equations an expression for the impedance matrix of the shell which is then interfaced with the T-matrix approach for acoustic wave scattering problems.
Book Synopsis Sound Scattering from Submerged Elastic Objects and Shells of General Shape by :
Download or read book Sound Scattering from Submerged Elastic Objects and Shells of General Shape written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three computational approaches have been used to obtain backscattering amplitudes for sound waves incident on elastic objects and shells in water: the T-matrix method, the Finite element/Boundary element method, and the superposition method. These methods have been found appropriate for analyzing the resonance effects apparent in the scattering from spheroidal solids, as well as from cylindrical shells with flat endcaps. The resonances have been interpreted by the phase matching of circumferential waves, and a simple method for obtaining the resonance frequencies based on the phase matching principle H. Uberall, L.R. Dragonette, and L. Flax, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 61, 711 (1977) has proved suitable for predicting the calculated resonances of spheroids ... Acoustic scattering, Shallow water, Waveguide propagation.
Book Synopsis Scattering and Radiation of High Frequency Sound in Water by Elastic Objects, Particle Suspensions, and Curved Surfaces by :
Download or read book Scattering and Radiation of High Frequency Sound in Water by Elastic Objects, Particle Suspensions, and Curved Surfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the following areas is reported: (A) Scattering of high- frequency sound by elastic objects in water--Experiments and theory are examined mostly for problems not describable by thin shell theory including: backwards- wave high-frequency enhancement of backscattering by shells; coincidence frequency enhancement for chirped bursts and impulses; a novel impulse generator and the effect of the mass-per-area of the shell on the specular return; and the application of time-frequency analysis. Some leaky wave scattering properties are examined including the Fresnel width of the coupling region, a convolution formulation, and a variable phase coupling coefficient. Retro-reflective backscattering of sound due to Rayleigh waves on objects with corners is demonstrated. (B) Radiation mechanisms for fluid-loaded plates--A flexural wavepacket is launched to propagate down a plate that has only its bottom half submerged. When the packet crosses the free surface of the water, there is a burst of acoustic radiation into the water due to the jump in fluid loading. This transition radiation is measured and modeled. (C) Caustic wavefields and diffraction catastrophes--Echo fluctuations associated with caustics in wavefields produced by reflection from rough surfaces and optical observations of E6 diffraction catastrophes. (D) Interaction of sound with sound mediated by a suspension.
Book Synopsis Critical Frequencies in Scattering from Submerged Elastic Shells by :
Download or read book Critical Frequencies in Scattering from Submerged Elastic Shells written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the process of scattering from submerged elastic shells, it is possible to excite many types of resonances. Among these are the lowest order symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb modes, and the waterborne waves, such as the pseudo-Stoneley resonances and the higher order symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb modes Si and Ai (i = 1, 2, 3 ...). the frequency at which these originate are referred to as critical frequencies. We establish simple rules to determine the frequencies at which the resonances originate as a function of shell thickness and material properties.

This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.
