Book excerpt: In 1969 we feit that the subject of angular correlations in nuclear disintegrat ion had received little special attention at international conferences. It is true that perturbed angular correlations had been discussed at a smalI, highly - specialised meeting at Uppsala in 1963 and that in 1967 certain aspects of perturbed angular correlations had been considered at a conference on hyperfine structure at Asilomar. However, both conferences were very limited in scope from the point of view of a low - energy nuclear physicist. Besides, since these conferences were being held, the field of perturbed ?ngular correlations had received new impetus from the still ex panding application of the implantation of radioactive isotopes in suitable environ ments, from the construction of large superconductive magnets, etc. Meanwhile, the technique of measuring correlations between beta particles and circularly polarized gamma rays had been developed to such a degree that they lent themselves to the in vestigation of beta decay, nuclear structure and charge dependence of nuclear forces. The systematic study of heavy elements had increased the import an ce of alpha-gamma angular correlations which present their own specific problems. Theoretical internal conversion data had become available to such an extent that electron -gamma direct ional correlations became an important tool in the investigation of nuclear structure: in a large number of cases it is more advantageous to study electron -gamma corre lations instead of the commonly measured gamma -gamma directional correlations.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Physics Applications on Materials Science by : E. Recknagel
Download or read book Nuclear Physics Applications on Materials Science written by E. Recknagel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen a rapid development and growing importance in the application of nuclear physics methods to material sciences. It is a general desire to understand modern material problems on a microscopic scale, which, due to their inherent microscopic nature, made nuclear techniques highly suitable tools for basic and applied research in this field. The Advanced Study Institute on "Nuclear Physics Applications on Ma terials Science" brought together scientists active in different but closely re lated fields to review and discuss selected topics of bulk properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators as well as properties of surfaces, interfaces and thin films. Most of the excellent lectures and oral presentations of the School are collected in part I of the present volume, while extended abstracts of scientific work presented as posters are added in part II. The pleasant site of the ASI at Viana do Castelo and the northern province of Portugal, Alto Minho, provided the stimulating atmosphere for an in spiring School. Many people contributed to the scientific and social success of the institute. Thanks are especially due to the members of the local organizing committee, N. Ayres de Campos, M. Fernanda da Silva, A. Pedroso de Lima and my co-director J. Carvalho Soares. His permanent involvement in preparing and realization of the ASI was essential for this memorable School.

Book Synopsis The Time Domain in Surface and Structural Dynamics by : G.J Long
Download or read book The Time Domain in Surface and Structural Dynamics written by G.J Long and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About two years ago, while studying the dynamic properties of Fe (CO)IJ ,we realized that there 3 was virtually no single source of infonnation on the structural dynamics of materials. The time domain of different dynamic structural processes covers many orders of magnitude and may be in vestigated by numerous, vastly different, experimental techniques. Indeed, the subject seemed ap propriate for a NATO Advanced Study Institute at which we could bring together chemists, physicists, metallurgists, and bioscientists using the various techniques for the study of sundry time sensitive materials. The actual Advanced Study Institute, which met in II Ciocco, Italy, from 14 to 26 June 1987, was, in fact, a dynamic experience for those of us involved. Now we have come to the final phase, the communication of the results of this Advanced Study Institute to the general scientific community. In so doing, we hope to provide in one place a convenient source of infor mation on dynamics at the surface and within a solid state material. The beautiful mountainous setting of Tuscany and especially the idyllic surroundings of II Ciocco provided an ideal venue for the Advanced Study Institute. Our field trip to Pisa linked our topic to the history of time measurement through a visit to the Pisa cathedral where, presumably, Galileo first conceived the isochronism of the simple pendulum and its use in time measurement.
Book Synopsis Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Transition Metal Chemistry by : Philipp Gütlich
Download or read book Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Transition Metal Chemistry written by Philipp Gütlich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-25 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: concentrates on teaching techniques using as much theory as needed. application of the techniques to many problems of materials characterization. Mössbauer spectroscopy is a profound analytical method which has nevertheless continued to develop. The authors now present a state-of-the art book which consists of two parts. The first part details the fundamentals of Mössbauer spectroscopy and is based on a book published in 1978 in the Springer series 'Inorganic Chemistry Concepts' by P. Gütlich, R. Link and A.X. Trautwein. The second part covers useful practical aspects of measurements, and the application of the techniques to many problems of materials characterization. The update includes the use of synchroton radiation and many instructive and illustrative examples in fields such as solid state chemistry, biology and physics, materials and the geosciences, as well as industrial applications. Special chapters on magnetic relaxation phenomena (S. Morup) and computation of hyperfine interaction parameters (F. Neese) are also included. The book concentrates on teaching the technique using theory as much as needed and as little as possible. The reader will learn the fundamentals of the technique and how to apply it to many problems of materials characterization. Transition metal chemistry, studied on the basis of the most widely used Mössbauer isotopes, will be in the foreground.
Book Synopsis Lecture Notes on Equilibrium Point Defects and Thermophysical Properties of Metals by : Yaakov Kraftmakher
Download or read book Lecture Notes on Equilibrium Point Defects and Thermophysical Properties of Metals written by Yaakov Kraftmakher and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significant progress in the study of point defects in metals, some important problems still do not have unambiguous solutions. One of the most practically important questions relates to equilibrium defect concentrations. There exist two opposite viewpoints: (1) defect contributions to physical properties of metals at high temperatures are small and cannot be separated from the effects of anharmonicity; the equilibrium defect concentrations at the melting points are in the range of 10(-4) to 10(-3); (2) in many cases, defect contributions to the specific heat of metals are much larger than nonlinear effects of anharmonicity and can be separated without crucial errors; the equilibrium concentrations at the melting points are of the order of 10(-3) in low-melting-point metals and 10(-2) in high-melting-point metals. This book discusses the experimental results and theoretical considerations favoring each claim. At present, the majority of the scientific community hold the first viewpoint. Regrettably, the data supporting the second viewpoint have never been displayed and discussed together, and the criticism of this viewpoint has never included a detailed analysis. Important arguments supporting this viewpoint have appeared in the last decade. It may turn out that just calorimetric determinations provide the most reliable values of equilibrium defect concentrations in metals. In this book, the main attention is paid to equilibrium point defects in metals and their relation to thermophysical properties of metals. Along with a discussion on experimental data and theoretical estimates now available, some approaches are proposed that seem to be most suitable for settling thequestion.

Book Synopsis Applications of Ion Beams to Metals by : S. Picraux
Download or read book Applications of Ion Beams to Metals written by S. Picraux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conferences have been held in the past on atomic collision phenomena and on the applications of ion beams to semiconductors. However, within the past year it became apparent that there is a growing new area of active research involving the use of ion beams to modify and study the basic properties of metals. As a result a topical conference was organized to bring together for the first time scientists with a wide range of backgrounds and interests related to this field. This book contains the proceed ings of the International Conference on Applications of Ion Beams to Metals which was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 2-4, 1973. Much of the work presented herein represents ideas and concepts which have had little or no previous exposure in the open literature. The application of ion beams to superconducting prop erties for example is quite new, as is the chapter on ion induced surface reactions, which includes primarily oxidation and corrosion studies of implanted materials. These areas, as well as the chapter on implantation alloy formation, indicate important future areas of the application of ion beams to metals. A reading of the chapters on superconductivity and on oxida tion and corrosion can serve to bring one up to date on nearly all the existing information in these areas of the ion beam mod ification of metals. A broad perspective of the oxidation area is given in the invited paper by G. Dearnaley.
Book Synopsis Mössbauer Effect Methodology by : Irwin J. Gruverman
Download or read book Mössbauer Effect Methodology written by Irwin J. Gruverman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth volume of a series that provides a continuing forum for publication of developments in M6ssbauer effect method ology and of spectroscopy and its applications. M ossbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 6, records the proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on M6ssbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and concentrated on methodology, applications, and spectroscopy, with special sections on lunar sample work and on standardization and nomenclature. The symposium was held at the Palmer House in Chicago on January 25, 1970. Dr. J. C. Walker presided over the after noon and evening sessions. About two hundred participants attended, reflecting the continued importance of and interest in this series. Austin Science Associates, Elron Electronic Industries, High Voltage Engineering Corporation, and Reuter-Stokes Electronic Components Company demonstrated lines of equipment for M6ssbauer work. The usual high degree of interest in the well-designed commercial instrumentation was evident. The highlight of the symposium was the session on lunar samples. Fortuitously, the timing of the symposium permitted it to provide one ofthe earliest exposures ofthe lunar results to the scientific community. Many papers on other applications were presented, including work on frozen aqueous solutions. Four papers on methodology development made up one session, including reports on a polarized source, on a coincidence technique, and on the use of radio frequency to perturb hyperfine levels. As usual, many of the papers report work in fields remote from basic physics.
