Book excerpt: With increased usage among today's modern infrastructure, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and its mechanical properties have been the focus of many research projects and experiments. Understanding the advantages of this relatively new material can provide immense benefits in design of global infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to fill the gaps in understanding of long-term deformation behavior and structural significance of UHPC mixtures by accurately measuring and modeling the creep strain observed in UHPC specimens. For this study, a series of six, 2.5" by 2.5" by 36" column specimens were tested, three cast with normal strength concrete and three cast with a modified ultra-high-performance concrete without steel fibers. The specimens were loaded to varying stress levels defined as fractions of measured f'c values for a duration of 28 days. Displacement measurements were taken at predetermined time intervals using a Whittemore gauge and embedded brass inserts. The data collected for each specimen was fitted using a Laplace Transform Elastic-Viscoelastic solution. The fitted data was then used to show and compare calculated values of creep compliance and creep coefficients for the various stress levels of each concrete mix. The creep compliance values after 28 days for the normal strength concrete ranged from 2.48E-07 to 3.05E-07 psi−1 and the 28-day creep coefficients ranged from 0.27 to 1.69. The creep compliance values after 28 days for the modified ultra-high-performance concrete ranged from 2.08E-07 to 2.21E-07 psi−1 and the 28-day creep coefficients ranged from 0.38 to 0.50. The best fit models for creep, shrinkage and recovery curves and their respective fit parameters are presented as well.

Some workers have found a 'creep maximum' at a particular temperature range; others have not encountered this phenomenon. Among those who have found it, there is lack of agreement as to what the range is. All available data have been collected, reduced to comparable form, and analyzed. The analysis has been reviewed in the light of the several theories of the mechanism of concrete creep. It is concluded that the new results on temperature effects on creep do not resolve the conflicts among the various creep theories, but they tend to support the seepage theory more than any other. Many factors affecting creep are found to be influential at elevated temperatures in analogous fashion to their influence at room temperature. These factors include time under load, applied stress, maturity of concrete, and moisture content of concrete. The effect of temperature, at least up to 50 C, is to increase creep by a factor of two or three at 50 C. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book is based on Reinforced Concrete-Prestressed Concrete, Volume 2, Accounting for the Effects of Creep and Shrinkage on the Behavior of Structural Systems by Hubert Rusch and Dieter Jungwirth, which appeared in German in 1976. Even then, it was Hubert Rusch's fervent wish to have his thoughts on the deformations of concrete translated into English in order to reach a wider audience. His earlier efforts to contribute a study to the Series of Monographs of the Ameri can Institute had unfortunately not succeeded. Despite a serious illness, Hubert Rusch undertook, with his characteristic prudence and thoroughness, the preparatory work for the translation and related revision of his book. Unfortunately fate did not grant him the satisfaction of seeing his work completed. Hubert Rusch died on October 17, 1979. In writing this book, Hubert Rusch drew on his many years of devoted study of the creep problem. These investigations go back to 1934. His awareness of the plastic deformation of concrete under sustained load, which had been reported to him on the occasion of an American sojourn, led him to discover the causes of a major building collapse. At his urging, Professor A. Hummel published, in 1935, a critical survey of the test results then available on concrete creep.

The papers presented at this meeting covered the wide range starting with microstructural aspects and mechanisms and including constitutive modelling and structural creep analysis. These contributions together with summaries of two panel discussions are being published in this volume. All serious of the meeting have been introduced by invited lectures. These papers will be published in a special volume "Creep and Moisture Effects in Concrete". This special volume is rather to be a general survey of the different areas covered while the present conference proceedings provide a unique selection of research papers. Nowadays time-dependent deformation of concrete can be taken into consideration realistically by computerized structural analysis.
