Book Synopsis National Basketball Association Franchises by : Frank P. Jozsa
Download or read book National Basketball Association Franchises written by Frank P. Jozsa and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development and organization of the NBA and its clubs, how each club has performed in seasons and postseasons, and to what extent each has prospered and succeeded as a business enterprise despite competition for market share from other types of entertainment. Each chapter contains two core themes—Team Performance and Franchise Business. The former highlights how teams won division and conference titles and NBA championships while the latter analyzes and compares financial data including revenue, gate receipts, and operating income. The book also explores such things as when each franchise organized and why it joined the NBA, a brief profile of its current majority owner or ownership group, records of teams’ special coaches and players, attendances at home games, and how their arenas rank as venues for fans. This book explains why particular teams located in very large, large, midsized, or small markets win more games and titles than others and when and how frequently this occurs. In addition, it provides ways to individually—and by division or conference—compare basketball franchises from a financial perspective.

Book Synopsis The Timber Wolf in Wisconsin by : Richard P. Thiel
Download or read book The Timber Wolf in Wisconsin written by Richard P. Thiel and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1958, in the far northern town of Cornucopia, Wisconsin's "last" timber wolf was accidentally run over by an automobile. The "humane" intention to end the animal's suffering produced a grisly aftermath: the wolf survived the impact of the car, was bludgeoned with a tire iron twice but survived, and finally had its throat slit with a restaurant knife. This horrifying scene is certainly an apt (if appalling) symbol of the timber wolf's early fate in Wisconsin. Feared, detested, hunted down for state-authorized bounties, the animal was systematically exterminated as an enemy of man and progress. Yet this bleak chapter in the history of conservation has a happier ending. Seventeen years later, in 1975, the timber wolf had officially reestablished itself and, as a protected species, is now flourishing under the care of Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources. Few can be more caring than the author, a DNR educator in wildlife management. As an inquisitive teenager, Richard Thiel began his pursuit of the Wisconsin timber wolf's story in the mid-1960s and has been at it ever since. The result is this arresting, intensely readable book, a story of fear, mistrust, and misunderstanding that ends, thankfully, as one of hope and appreciation.

Book Synopsis The Sniper Encyclopaedia by : John Walter
Download or read book The Sniper Encyclopaedia written by John Walter and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete guide to snipers, rifles, techniques, battles, and campaigns throughout history and around the world, by the author of The Hand Gun Story. The work features hundreds of snipers, including not only the best-known—world renowned gurus such as Vasiliy Zaytsev and Chris Kyle—but also many crack shots overlooked by history. Among them are some of more than a thousand Red Army snipers—men and women, who amassed sufficient kills to be awarded the Medal for Courage and the Order of Glory. Also included are some of the best-known sniper victims, and the veracity of the most popular myths. The book thoroughly examines the history and development of the many specialist sniper rifles—some more successful than others—that have served the world’s armies from the nineteenth-century American Wars to today’s technology-based conflicts. Attention, too, is paid to the progress made with ammunition—without which, of course, precision shooting would be impossible. The development of aids and accessories, from camouflage clothing to laser rangefinders, is also considered. Finally, The Sniper Encyclopedia examines significant locations and specific campaigns—the way marksman have influenced the course of the individual battles and places which have played a crucial part in the history of sniping, from individual sites to sniper schools and training grounds. The book contains authors’ biographies, a critical assessment of the many books and memoirs on the world of the sniper, and a guide to research techniques. “A remarkable work of research and an endless treasure trove of information for anyone with an interest in the subject.” —Martin Pegler, author of Out Of Nowhere: A History of the Military Sniper
