Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: Very good, course: Masters of Science in Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Speech recognition, a process of changing speech to text, has been one of a research area for the last many decades. Even though there are several techniques of modeling a speech recognizer, yet it is still challenging to find one that overcomes all the limitations. So this thesis examines the possibility of developing Tigrinya language speech recognizer by finding out which sub-word unit is most appropriate in developing efficient large vocabulary, speaker independent, and continuous Tigrinya speech recognition system using hidden Markov models (HMM). The recognizer was developed using Hidden Markov Model, and the Hidden Markov Modeling Toolkit was used to implement it. In the course of developing this system, the speech data is recorded at a sampling rate of 16 KHz and the recorded speech is converted into Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) vectors for further analysis and processing. In this research work, 1000 selected utterances were uttered by 26 selected peoples from different age group and sex constituting of 4643 unique words. Accordingly, the database is set up into two ways the first database comprised of 1000 utterances that are used for training and out of which 100 sentences were taken for testing and evaluation whereas the second database consists of 900 utterances for training and 100 utterances for test and evaluation which is different from the training set. Furthermore, the data is preprocessed in line with the requirements of the HTK toolkit and both the text and speech corpuses were prepared in consultation with the domain experts.

Book excerpt: In this exhilarating culinary novel, a woman's road trip through Indonesia becomes a discovery of friendship, self, and other rare delicacies. Aruna is an epidemiologist dedicated to food and avian politics. One is heaven, the other earth. The two passions blend in unexpected ways when Aruna is asked to research a handful of isolated bird flu cases reported across Indonesia. While it's put a crimp in her aunt's West Java farm, and made her own confit de canard highly questionable, the investigation does provide an irresistible opportunity. It's the perfect excuse to get away from corrupt and corrosive Jakarta and explore the spices of the far-flung regions of the islands with her three friends: a celebrity chef, a globe-trotting "foodist," and her coworker Farish. From Medan to Surabaya, Palembang to Pontianak, Aruna and her friends have their fill of local cuisine. With every delicious dish, she discovers there's so much more to food, politics, and friendship. Now, this liberating new perspective on her country--and on her life--will push her to pursue the things she's only dreamed of doing.

Tens of thousands of Eritreans make perilous voyages across Africa and the Mediterranean Sea every year. Why do they risk their lives to reach European countries where so many more hardships await them? By visiting family homes in Eritrea and living with refugees in camps and urban peripheries across Ethiopia, Sudan, and Italy, Milena Belloni untangles the reasons behind one of the most under-researched refugee populations today. Balancing encounters with refugees and their families, smugglers, and visa officers, The Big Gamble contributes to ongoing debates about blurred boundaries between forced and voluntary migration, the complications of transnational marriages, the social matrix of smuggling, and the role of family expectations, emotions, and values in migrants’ choices of destinations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most African languages are spoken by communities as one of several languages present on a daily basis. The persistence of multilingualism and the linguistic creativity manifest in the playful use of different languages are striking, especially against the backdrop of language death and expanding monolingualism elsewhere in the world. The effortless mastery of several languages is disturbing, however, for those who take essentialist perspectives that see it as a problem rather than a resource, and for the dominating, conflictual, sociolinguistic model of multilingualism. This volume investigates African minority languages in the context of changing patterns of multilingualism, and also assesses the status of African languages in terms of existing influential vitality scales. An important aspect of multilingual praxis is the speakers' agency in making choices, their repertoires of registers and the multiplicity of language ideology associated with different ways of speaking. The volume represents a new and original contribution to the ethnography of speaking of multilingual practices and the cultural ideas associated with them.
