Book excerpt: Abstract: "We prove that in any N-node communications network with maximum degree d, any deterministic oblivious algorithm for routing an arbitrary permutation requires [Omega]([formula]) parallel communication steps. This is an improvement of a result by Borodin and Hopcroft. For the N-node hypercube, in particular, we show a matching upper bound by exhibiting a deterministic oblivious algorithm that routes any permutation in O([formula]) time. The best previously known upper bound was O([formula]). Our algorithm could be practical for small N (up to about 2[superscript 14] nodes)."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Parallel Algorithms and Architectures: Arrays Trees Hypercubes provides an introduction to the expanding field of parallel algorithms and architectures. This book focuses on parallel computation involving the most popular network architectures, namely, arrays, trees, hypercubes, and some closely related networks. Organized into three chapters, this book begins with an overview of the simplest architectures of arrays and trees. This text then presents the structures and relationships between the dominant network architectures, as well as the most efficient parallel algorithms for a wide variety of problems. Other chapters focus on fundamental results and techniques and on rigorous analysis of algorithmic performance. This book discusses as well a hybrid of network architecture based on arrays and trees called the mesh of trees. The final chapter deals with the most important properties of hypercubes. This book is a valuable resource for readers with a general technical background.

This tutorial presents the basic concepts in the design and analysis of randomized algorithms. The first part of the book presents tools from probability theory and probabilistic analysis that are recurrent in algorithmic applications. Algorithmic examples are given to illustrate the use of each tool in a concrete setting. In the second part of the book, each of the seven chapters focuses on one important area of application of randomized algorithms: data structures; geometric algorithms; graph algorithms; number theory; enumeration; parallel algorithms; and on-line algorithms. A comprehensive and representative selection of the algorithms in these areas is also given. This book should prove invaluable as a reference for researchers and professional programmers, as well as for students.

Book excerpt: This volume contains revised versions of the 23 regular papers presented at the First International Workshop on Parallel Computer Routing and Communication (PCRCW '94), held in Seattle, Washington in May 1994. Routing for parallel computer communication has recently experienced almost explosive activity: ever increasing processor speeds are placing greater demands on interprocessor communication, while technological advances offer new capabilities to respond to those demands. The contributions from industry and academia cover all areas, from details of hardware design to proofs of theoretical results. There are also many papers dealing with the performance of various adaptive routing schemes, new network topologies, network interfaces, and fault-tolerant issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges faced by designers of digital systems is optimizing the communication and interconnection between system components. Interconnection networks offer an attractive and economical solution to this communication crisis and are fast becoming pervasive in digital systems. Current trends suggest that this communication bottleneck will be even more problematic when designing future generations of machines. Consequently, the anatomy of an interconnection network router and science of interconnection network design will only grow in importance in the coming years. This book offers a detailed and comprehensive presentation of the basic principles of interconnection network design, clearly illustrating them with numerous examples, chapter exercises, and case studies. It incorporates hardware-level descriptions of concepts, allowing a designer to see all the steps of the process from abstract design to concrete implementation. Case studies throughout the book draw on extensive author experience in designing interconnection networks over a period of more than twenty years, providing real world examples of what works, and what doesn't. Tightly couples concepts with implementation costs to facilitate a deeper understanding of the tradeoffs in the design of a practical network. A set of examples and exercises in every chapter help the reader to fully understand all the implications of every design decision.

This book was released on 1993-06-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the field of parallel computer architectures and parallel algorithms has been very successful in recent years, and further progress isto be expected. On the other hand, the question of basic principles of the architecture of universal parallel computers and their realizations is still wide open. The answer to this question must be regarded as mostimportant for the further development of parallel computing and especially for user acceptance. The First Heinz Nixdorf Symposium brought together leading experts in the field of parallel computing and its applications to discuss the state of the art, promising directions of research, and future perspectives. It was the first in a series of Heinz Nixdorf Symposia, intended to cover varying subjects from the research spectrum of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute of the University of Paderborn. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, which was held in Paderborn in November 1992. The contributions are grouped into four parts: parallel computation models and simulations, existing parallel machines, communication and programming paradigms, and parallel algorithms.
