Book Synopsis Tiepolo's Cleopatra by : Jaynie Anderson
Download or read book Tiepolo's Cleopatra written by Jaynie Anderson and published by Macmillan Education AU. This book was released on 2003 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Jaynie Anderson is an internationally recognised scholar, renowned for her research and publications on the Italian masters. On this occasion she has concentrated on one painting, the National Gallery of Victorias famous Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra by Giambattista Tiepolo. This glorious work of art, considered a centre-piece of the collection has recently undergone restoration in preparation for the re-opening of the National Gallery on St. Kilda Road in December 2003. Jaynie Anderson has collected together a previously under-examined range of Tiepolos drawings and studies - and other versions of the theme by Tiepolo and other Italian artists. She has woven them into the spectacular history of the painting, its production and its various owners prior to coming to Australia (including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg) - not to mention the fascinating stories of Antony and Cleopatra and their suicides, which the author has researched and retells in great detail and considerable passion. The book concludes with a chapter written by the National Gallery of Victorias conservators, John Payne and Carl Villis.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with an exhibit which opened in Venice in 1996 and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the first part of 1997. The exhibit organizers aimed to show Tiepolo as one of the presiding geniuses of the European imagination. In essays and entries on every work shown, the text illuminates his formation; his mastery of mythological and poetic subjects; his religious pictures; his excursions into portraiture and studies of ideal heads; and the process by which he proceeded from initial ideas--small- scale sketches--to large canvases and frescoes. Beautifully produced, the volume makes a stunning impact, and will have to suffice for those who can't make it to the exhibit itself. Book Synopsis The Eighteenth Century in Italy by : Jacob Bean
Download or read book The Eighteenth Century in Italy written by Jacob Bean and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1971 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the third in a series of catalogues published jointly by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Pierpont Morgan Library to record exhibitions of drawings from the two institutions and from distinguished private collections. The exhibitions and the books that illustrate them will ultimately document the finest traditions of European draughtsmanship, from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. The Eighteenth Century in Italy, which follows The Italian Renaissance and The Seventeenth Century in Italy, contains reproductions of 300 drawings, presented one to a page. The book brings together, chronologically, brilliant works by G. B. Tiepolo, Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and Domenico Tiepolo—as well as drawings of fifty-one other masters of the Settecento. As in the preceding catalogues, the photographic reproductions have been made directly from the drawings themselves in order to retain, as much as possible, the original tonalities. Each of the 300 drawings has a commentary, record of provenance and exhibitions, technical description, and bibliography. And, for the first time in the series, many watermarks have been drawn and reproduced photographically"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Narrative Rewritings and Artistic Praxis in Derek Walcott's Works by : Mattia Mantellato
Download or read book Narrative Rewritings and Artistic Praxis in Derek Walcott's Works written by Mattia Mantellato and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Derek Walcott’s literary and artistic wor(l)d. Western postcolonial critique has depicted the Nobel Prize laureate as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century world. This, however, devalues his fundamental contribution to the realm of Caribbean theatre and art. The text examines Walcott’s multimodal production, a combination of West Indian folkloric forms and Western-oriented structures and themes, by discussing three of his works—two plays, The Joker of Seville and Pantomime, and a long poem, Tiepolo’s Hound. These epitomise respectively a response to Spanish, English, and French cultural legacies in the New World as postcolonial re-writings of Don Juan, Robinson Crusoe, and Camille Pissarro’s stories. Following Quijano and Mignolo’s decolonial approaches and Riane Eisler’s partnership perspective, the book uncovers the strategies used by Walcott to respond to the colonial matrix of power.

Download or read book Hermann Goring and the Nazi Art Collection written by Kenneth D. Alford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the Nazis plundered from occupied countries millions of items of incalculable value estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Spearheaded by Hermann Goring the looting program quickly created the largest private art collection in the world, exceeding the collections amassed by the Metropolitan in New York, the British Museum in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. By the end of the war, the Nazis had stolen roughly one-fifth of the entire art treasures of the world. This book explores the formation of the Nazi art collection and the methods used by Goring and his party to strip occupied Europe of a large part of its artistic heritage.
