Book excerpt: Already more than sixty years Paul Ricoeur enriches the international philosophical patrimony with an astonishing number of highly technical books and enlightening reflections on actual problems and situations. To serve the community of researchers in philosophy I have already published two systematic bibliographies of (and on) Ricoeur in 1985 and 1995. Encouraged by friends and colleagues I present now another updated bibliography as exhaustive as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The education of humanity is the key to the next century's culture, its social and practical life. The main concerns of education are perennial, but the continuous flood of inventions, the technological innovations that re-shape life, calls for a radically new appraisal of the situation, such as only philosophy can provide. Answering the call of humanity for the measure, sense of proportion and direction that could re-orient present and future education, the phenomenology of life - integral and scientific, in a dialogue with the arts, the sciences, and the humanities - proposes an ontopoietic model of life's unfolding as the universal paradigm for this re-orientation. Taking the Human Creative Condition as its Archimedean point, it offers a unique context for a fresh investigation of the concerns of education, both perennial and immediate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Paul Ricoeur can be regarded as a faithful expression of the philosophy of the 20th century and as the paradigmatic exponent of a new philosophical character for the 21st century. Without belonging to any particular school, Ricoeur discussed a wide range of philosophical topics, with many of his insights being prophetic indeed. This book demonstrates that there is no single interpretation of Ricoeur's philosophy, describing his way of thinking. Rather, the book provides an opportunity to see Ricoeur's thoughts as a guide for a human enveloped in the experience of life and being. By exploring Paul Ricoeur in his life circumstances - through war, the academy, and his relationships, as well as through his works and his own words - this book offers a more complete picture of the many aspects of one man and the legacy he left behind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the social construction of age in the context of EFL in Mexico. It is the first book to address the age factor in SLA from a social perspective. Based on research carried out at a public university in Mexico, it investigates how adults of different ages experience learning a new language and how they enact their age identities as language learners. By approaching the topic from a social constructionist perspective and in light of recent work in sociolinguistics and cultural studies, it broadens the current second language acquisition focus on age as a fixed biological or chronological variable to encompass its social dimensions. What emerges is a more complex and nuanced understanding of age as it intersects with language learning in a way that links it fundamentally to other social phenomena, such as gender, ethnicity and social class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume delves deeply into the role played by stories and storytelling in shaping, controlling and mapping present-day Spain, and examines fiction in various manifestations and genres, especially written and filmic. It contrasts such stories and their context with the past, investigating the differences and similarities between spatially and geographically varying narrations in order to tease out the link between the time of telling and the act of living. Throughout the book, scholars look separately at this phenomenon, and their findings reveal a close bond between events occurring in the real world and the relating of fictional stories. Particularly in Spain, the geographic space of interest here, storytelling is used both as catharsis and didactically. Authors and filmmakers find inspiration in everyday occurrences, and, while there is nothing unusual in that, the interest here lies in the consequent transformation of these occurrences into fascinating stories that attempt to make sense of chaotic events, connect those events temporally, and explore the meaning of the consequent coherence. Stories are at the very essence of humanity, be they fictional or based on everyday reality. This collection focuses specifically on Spain where easily identifiable features of history (such as the Spanish Civil War, the Franco Dictatorship, transition, democracy, and the global economic crisis) have had a major impact on everyday life. The narratives emerging show clear evidence of that impact, with an emphasis on such themes as the significance of memory, the impossibility and instability of such memory, the chaotic nature of life, and the place of the nation/state in the psyche of the individual, with emerging themes investigating the role of solidarity and empathy in the empowerment of the individual. This volume is informed by the shift that occurred in the twentieth century towards a world of unstable parameters, whereby whatever knowledge that is received must be questioned as to the extent of its authenticity since that knowledge is always affected by memory, experience, and time, all subjective phenomena in themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore the theoretical and architectural connections between memory, values, cultural identity, and adaptive reuse in Latin America. It does so by critically analyzing ideas and works within the context from where they emerge. With rich and layered historic centers, a wealth of colonial and 19th-century buildings, and the heritage from the modern era, Latin America offers a unique architectural patrimony and its contribution and impact on contemporary culture and architecture still require critical study and discussion. The chapters of this timely book consider the conflicted relationship between colonialism, native cultures, and immigration. It also explores the connections between modern projects and national identity, and contemporary interventions serving the needs of diverse societies while being cultural receptacles of memory. While most books on adaptive reuse focus on the larger general concepts, different technical approaches, and case studies, this book will contribute to the study of adaptive reuse moving away from Europe and North America, focusing instead on cases in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru. This book is an important resource for researchers and students in the area of architecture, cultural, global, and design studies, heritage, geography, sociology, and history.
