Book Synopsis Steeped in Blood by : Frances J. Latchford
Download or read book Steeped in Blood written by Frances J. Latchford and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What personal truths reside in biological ties that are absent in adoptive ties? And why do we think adoptive and biological ties are essentially different when it comes to understanding who we are? At a time when interest in DNA and ancestry is exploding, Frances Latchford questions the idea that knowing one's bio-genealogy is integral to personal identity or a sense of family and belonging. Upending our established values and beliefs about what makes a family, Steeped in Blood examines the social and political devaluation of adoptive ties. It takes readers on an intellectual journey through accepted wisdom about adoption, twins, kinship, and incest, and challenges our naturalistic and individualistic assumptions about identity and the biological ties that bind us, sometimes violently, to our families. Latchford exposes how our desire for bio-genealogical knowledge, understood as it is by family and adoption experts, pathologizes adoptees by posing the biological tie as a necessary condition for normal identity formation. Rejecting the idea that a love of the self-same is fundamental to family bonds, her book is a reaction to the wounds families suffer whenever they dare to revel in their difference. A rejoinder to rhetoric that defines adoptees, adoptive kin, and their family intimacies as inferior and inauthentic, Steeped in Blood's view through the lens of critical adoption studies decentres our cultural obsession with the biological family imaginary and makes real the possibility of being family in the absence of blood.

Book excerpt: The 53rd National Congress of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB), which will be held in Riccione from 23 to 26 September, is characterised by the elevated scientific level and interdisciplinary interest of the numerous sessions in which it is organised. The Scientific Programme comprises three joint Symposia of the SIB and the Chemistry of Biological Systems section of the Italian Chemistry Society (SCI) on Molecular Systems Biology, Chemistry of Nucleic Acids, Protein and Drug Structure, and Environmental Biotechnology. These Symposia address groundbreaking arguments, making the joint interest of the two societies particularly fascinating; the joint organisation of these events in fact signals the shared intention to proceed along the path of scientific exchange. The topics of the other sessions have been chosen by the Scientific Committee on the basis of their scientific relevance and topicality, with particular attention paid to the selection of the speakers. The SIB sessions will range from Signal Transduction and Biomolecular Targets, Protein Misfolding and its Relationship with Disease, Emerging Techniques in Biochemistry, Gene Silencing, Redox Signalling and Oxidative Stress, Lipids in Cell Communication and Signal Transduction, Mitochondrial Function and Dysfunction.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Chomsky by : James McGilvray
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Chomsky written by James McGilvray and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely new edition of The Cambridge Companion to Chomsky surveys Chomsky's contributions to the science of language, to socioeconomic-political analysis and criticism, and to the study of the human mind. The first section focuses on the aims of Chomsky's recent 'biological-minimalist' turn in the science of language, and shows how Chomsky's view of the nature of language and its introduction to the human species has recently developed. The second section focuses on Chomsky's view of the mind and its parts - and how to study them. Finally, the third section examines some of Chomsky's many contributions to socio-political history and critique. This new edition examines Chomsky's views on a wide range of issues, from his views of the lexicon, language's evolution, and the study of mind to the status of capitalism and the Palestine-Israel conflict. It will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in Chomsky's ideas.

Book Synopsis New Foundation of Biology by : I. Berczi
Download or read book New Foundation of Biology written by I. Berczi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-07-19 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new scientific discipline, acknowledged 65 years after its discovery, was the focus of the first Conference on Neuroimmune Biology in Canada. The papers presented at the conference, and in this volume, are dedicated to Dr. Hans Selye who is recognized as discovering the existence of a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-thymus axis. This axis plays an important role in the adaptation of higher animals and man to various physical, chemical, biological and emotional challenges. The conference and participants also honored Dr. Andor Szentivanyi whose opening paper, "Studies on the hypothalamic regulation of histamine synthesis", is contained in the introduction to this book. Dr. Szentivanyi has dedicated his long research career to the clarification of the role of the central nervous system in immune and inflammatory reactions, and his experimental results are presented here. With an ultimate goal to achieve a more thorough understanding of higher organisms in their entire complexity, this book, the first in the series http://serval.elsevier.com/locate/series/nibNeuroImmune Biology presents a coordinated and integrated view of the growing body of knowledge rapidly accumulating in this area.
Book Synopsis Emergence and Modularity in Life Sciences by : Lars H. Wegner
Download or read book Emergence and Modularity in Life Sciences written by Lars H. Wegner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on modules and emergence with self-organization in the life sciences. As Aristotle observed so long ago, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. However, contemporary science is dominated by reductionist concepts and tends to neglect the non-reproducible features of complex systems, which emerge from the interaction of the smaller units they are composed of. The book is divided into three major parts; the essays in part A highlight the conceptual basis of emergence, linking it to the philosophy of science, systems biology and sustainability. This is subsequently exemplified in part B by applying the concept of emergence to various biological disciplines, such as genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, plant physiology and ecology. New aspects of emergence come into play when biology meets the technical sciences, as revealed in a chapter on bionics. In turn, part C adopts a broader view, revealing how the organization of life follows a hierarchical order in terms of scalar dimensions, ranging from the molecular level to the entire biosphere. The idea that life is primarily and exclusively shaped by processes at the molecular level (and, in particular, by the information encoded in the genome) is refuted; rather, there is no hierarchy with respect to the level of causation in the cross-talk between the levels. In the last two chapters, the evolutionary trend toward ever-increasing complexity in living systems is interpreted in terms of the Gaia hypothesis sensu Lovelock: the entire biosphere is viewed as a functional unit (or ‘holobiont-like system’) organized to develop and sustain life on Earth.
