Book excerpt: This book introduces children to nature at its most powerful, showing not only the damage that floods and tidal waves can inflict on people and property, but also ways in which we are able to forecast weather to minimise damage. The book begins with an introduction describing the forces of nature, how they begin and what makes them grow stronger. The book then goes on to show how and where disasters occur, other weather phenomena associated with the same natural forces and how we track and respond to them. There are also facts included for example: flash floods in deserts can cause more damage than heat.

Download or read book Changing Sea Levels written by David Pugh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flooding of coastal communities is one of the major causes of environmental disasters world-wide. This textbook explains at a basic level, how sea levels are affected by astronomical tides, by weather effects that generate extreme flooding events, and over the longer term by ocean circulation and climate trends. It also indicates how sea level changes are related to changing risks, coastal dynamics, geology and biology; and outlines some of the economic and legal implications. Based on courses taught by the author in the UK and the USA, this book is aimed at undergraduate students at all levels, with the text developed in such a way that non-basic mathematics is confined to Appendices and a web site (http://publishing.cambridge.org/resources/0521532183/). Changing Sea Levels will also interest and inform professionals in many fields including hydrography, coastal engineering, geology, biology and also coastal planning and economics.

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation Tidal Flooding and Its Research in Hong Kong Submitted by Wu Chun Ping For the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong September 2003 Typhoons are always remembered by citizens in Hong Kong. Among them, Wanda in 1962 is the most notorious one. Extensive damage was caused by gales and the huge waves induced. Eastern New Territories along the shores of the Tolo Harbour was devastated by tidal flooding. Fishermen and farmers suffered a lot. However, Wanda was not the only destructive typhoon. In 1874, 1906, 1923 and 1937, exceptionally high waves were also recorded. The disasters due to tidal flooding brought by them were not lighter than that of Wanda. The huge tidal waves during typhoons are related to storm surge. The Royal Observatory started research into the subject in 1950. Statistical approaches were used to investigate the phenomenon at the early stage. Due to the large-scale reclamation projects of new town developments in 1970's, research in the field was accelerated. With the introduction of computer technology, storm surge numerical modelling was first carried out in 1976. A storm surge forecasting system using nomograms derived from the modelling results was established in 1978. The system combined tidal prediction with a tide measurement network to form a storm surge monitoring and tidal flooding warning system in Hong Kong.
