Book excerpt: Among the founding fathers of modern quantum physics few have contributed to our basic understanding of its concepts as much as E.P. Wigner. His articles on the epistemology of quantum mechanics and the measurement problem, and the basic role of symmetries were of fundamental importance for all subsequent work. He was also the first to discuss the concept of consciousness from the point of view of modern physics. G.G. Emch edited most of those papers and wrote a very helpful introduction into Wigner's contributions to Natural Philosophy. The book should be a gem for all those interested in the history and philosophy of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the early 1970s when Peter Kramer, a special envoy to the President of the United States, successfully concludes an Arab-Israeli peace treaty. A few weeks before the official signing, Kramer's secret past is discovered and threatens to wreck not only the treaty, but also the precarious balance of world peace. It seems Kramer is not who he appears to be. This startling revelation sets into motion a course of events with roots planted during the Holocaust that now have crept into the highest echelons of international politics and finance-and the events seem to be unstoppable unless some of the players are eliminated. Baruch Ben-David, the prime minister of Israel, owes his life to Kramer and is willing to prove his gratitude many times over. Meanwhile, Simon Jensen, the egocentric President of the United States, appears mentally unstable; and Paul Cline, a political assassin, faces his most difficult challenge. At the center of this deadly paradox stands Peter Kramer himself as he walks a thin moral tightrope between being a traitor to his people or a traitor to himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Dirac, who died in 1984, was without question one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century. His revolutionary contribution to modern quantum theory is remembered for its insight and creativity. He is especially famous for his prediction of the magnetic moment and spin of the electron and for the existence of antiparticles. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1933 at the age of 31. In this memorial volume, 24 of Dirac's friends, colleagues and contemporaries remember him with affection. There are chapters describing Dirac's personality, and many anecdotes about the man with a reputation for silence. Other chapters describe Dirac's science and its impact on modern physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Power Elite goes back almost a thousand years. A useful starting point, though, for the historical outline of the "modern" Power Elite would be about 350 years ago with their political and economic activities, and their alteration of nations' values to accept the Power Elite's control. A critical moment in their plan for global dominance occurred with the founding of the Illuminati in 1776. Not only did the Illuminati advocate the overthrow of monarchical authority, but religious authority as well. Dr. Cuddy covers the methods they have used to bring this about, including psychological conditioning and misdirection, and presents the Oklahoma City bombing as an example of that misdirection. He then takes an extensive look at how a "bold new world" is being shaped using coercive means to undermine national sovereignty and bring about a world socialist government. Dr. Cuddy also analyzes the role of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Power Elite's plan. Since the driving mechanism to bring about the plan's fulfillment is economics, he next reveals the looming economic disaster created to further the Power Elite's goals. This is followed by a look at the election of 2012, and the importance of President Obama's reelection as he moves the United States closer toward socialism. Finally, in "Looking Backward," Dr. Cuddy projects into the future to see how the Power Elite's ultimate plan for a world socialist government was fulfilled

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the foundations of the theory of nonlinear optimization as well as some related algorithms and presents a variety of applications from diverse areas of applied sciences. The author combines three pillars of optimization?theoretical and algorithmic foundation, familiarity with various applications, and the ability to apply the theory and algorithms on actual problems?and rigorously and gradually builds the connection between theory, algorithms, applications, and implementation. Readers will find more than 170 theoretical, algorithmic, and numerical exercises that deepen and enhance the reader's understanding of the topics. The author includes offers several subjects not typically found in optimization books?for example, optimality conditions in sparsity-constrained optimization, hidden convexity, and total least squares. The book also offers a large number of applications discussed theoretically and algorithmically, such as circle fitting, Chebyshev center, the Fermat?Weber problem, denoising, clustering, total least squares, and orthogonal regression and theoretical and algorithmic topics demonstrated by the MATLAB? toolbox CVX and a package of m-files that is posted on the book?s web site.

Book excerpt: Nonsmooth Optimization contains the proceedings of a workshop on non-smooth optimization (NSO) held from March 28 to April 8,1977 in Austria under the auspices of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. The papers explore the techniques and theory of NSO and cover topics ranging from systems of inequalities to smooth approximation of non-smooth functions, as well as quadratic programming and line searches. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with a survey of Soviet research on subgradient optimization carried out since 1962, followed by a discussion on rates of convergence in subgradient optimization. The reader is then introduced to the method of subgradient optimization in an abstract setting and the minimal hypotheses required to ensure convergence; NSO and nonlinear programming; and bundle methods in NSO. A feasible descent algorithm for linearly constrained least squares problems is described. The book also considers sufficient minimization of piecewise-linear univariate functions before concluding with a description of the method of parametric decomposition in mathematical programming. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians and mathematics students.
