Book excerpt: This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Are you exhausted all the time, plagued by brain fog, and unable to lose weight? Do you struggle with insomnia, panic attacks, and tremors? But does your doctor insist that your labs are normal, and that you just need to eat less and exercise more? As anyone who has been there knows, nothing is more frustrating, stressful, and emotionally draining than feeling unwell and being told you're fine by the very person who is supposed to heal you. The truth is, your symptoms could be triggered by a thyroid disorder—the hidden cause behind a wide array of health problems that can threaten to ruin your life. Thyroid dysfunctions like Hashimoto's disease, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism affect at least 20 million Americans and yet conventional medicine frequently misses the diagnosis. The scariest part? Most doctors won't even order thyroid tests unless you specifically ask. Now, in The Thyroid Connection, Dr. Amy Myers teaches you how to take your health into your own hands. Dr. Myers, originally misdiagnosed herself, understands the struggles of thyroid dysfunction firsthand. Fortunately, she also knows how achievable recovery and well-being are, and just how to get you there. In The Thyroid Connection, you'll discover: How to work with your doctor to get the correct diagnosis What blood tests to ask for, as well as what they mean How to find the right type and dose of supplemental thyroid hormone for you The role of gut health, diet, toxins, infections, and stress in thyroid dysfunction A complete 28-day plan to jumpstart your health and reverse your thyroid symptoms Complete with advice on diet and nutrition, supplements, exercise, stress relief, and sleep, The Thyroid Connection is the ultimate roadmap back to your happiest, healthiest self.

Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., bestselling author of The Thyroid Sourcebook (recommended by The New York Times), The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women and The Hypothyroid Sourcebook has just published The Thyroid Cancer Book, the only consumer book to date devoted to thyroid cancer. A thyroid cancer survivor herself, Rosenthal wrote the book she wishes she'd had when diagnosed in 1983. The Thyroid Cancer Book explains all forms of thyroid cancer and its treatment in plain language. It was written in consultation with the leading medical experts on thyroid cancer in North America, and is the only book of its kind in the world. It includes extensive information on: Significant risk factors for developing the disease, and how to find and investigate lumps in the neck Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers, as well as the less common medullary and anaplastic cancers Treatment options, surgery and radioactive iodine Post-treatment follow up, whole body scans and Thyrogen Self-healing and complementary therapies The emotional impact of cancer on families and loved ones Palliative care While thyroid cancer accounts for roughly two percent of all cancers, it's among the fastest growing cancers in incidence. Its causes in North America are associated with fallout from nuclear testing in the American midwest, and environmental causes which Rosenthal also writes about in detail. Recommended by Johns Hopkins Thyroid Tumor Center, The Thyroid Foundation of America, The American Foundation for Thyroid Patients, The Thyroid Foundation of Canada, CancerHelpUK, and thyroid cancer patients from both Thyca and Thry'Vors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date and comprehensive guide to all the common thyroid disorders that may be seen by internists, endocrinologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and endocrine surgeons. While the fundamentals of thyroid hormone function and regulation in health and disease are well covered, the primary focus is on the clinical approach to thyroid disease, with detailed coverage of both initial diagnosis and management and the role of imaging. Because most endocrine diseases are chronic and lifelong, special emphasis is placed on long-term management and the common pitfalls that may be encountered by the clinician. The editors are internationally acknowledged leaders in the field of thyroid disease and have gathered an outstanding team of authors, all of whom are also highly expert in their respective areas, but who, equally importantly, write in a clear and lucid style. The numerous isotope scan and ultrasonographic images ensure that the book will serve as a valuable reference atlas to which the physician will return again and again.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive knowledge about thyroid gland and highlights the recent trends in the management of thyroid dysfunctions. Thyroid disorders are amongst the most prevalent of medical conditions possibly after diabetes. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in adults in the general population ranges from 1 to 10 percent, and is even higher in selected groups. In the United Kingdom, 1–2% of the adult population is found to have thyroid dysfunction. It is interesting to note that thyroxin is the sixth most commonly dispensed drug in Scotland. Virtually all studies report higher prevalence rates for hypothyroidism in women and with advancing age. Abnormal thyroid functions have important public health consequences. Suppressed TSH levels have been associated with decreased bone density and with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation and premature atrial beat. It has been known for decades that overt hypothyroidism contributes to elevated serum cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk and recent studies suggest this may also be true with subclinical hypothyroidism.
