Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This imaginative and unconventional debut novel is set centuries in the future. An unnamed event has wiped out most of humanity, scattering its remnants across vast and now barren lands reminiscent of the 19th century western frontier of America. Small clusters of humans still cling to existence in a post-apocalyptic world that is increasingly overrun by those who have risen from the dead--or, as the living call them, the Walkin'. Thomas, a thirty-two year old conscripted soldier, homeward bound to the small frontier town of Barkley after fighting in a devastating civil war, is filled with hope at the thought of being reunited with his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Mary, both named after characters in the Good Book. As it turns out, he also happens to be among the Walkin'. Devoid of a pulse or sense of pain, but with his memories and hopes intact, Thomas soon realizes that the living, who are increasingly drawn to the followers of the Good Book, are not kindly disposed to the likes of him. And when he learns what the good people of Barkley intend to do to him, and to his family, he realizes he may just have to kidnap his daughter to save her from a fate worse than becoming a member of the undead. When the people of Barkley send out a posse in pursuit of father and daughter, the race for survival truly begins...

Book excerpt: The direction of Paul and Sean Cronin's lives was shaped the day their father, a self-made multimillionaire, decided that one of his boys would grow up to be a cardinal while the other would become president of the United States. For his elder son, Paul, the father had even chosen a wife—the beautiful Nora, who had come to the Cronin home as an orphan child years before. Obediently, and with a genuine vocation, the younger son, Sean, went into the priesthood. With a more cynical view, Paul went to Notre Dame to prepare for a life in politics until the Korean War intervened. Then came the news—Paul Cronin was missing in action. "If he dies," Sean's father told him, "you must leave the seminary and marry Nora." The words sang in Sean's head. Could he renounce his sacred calling—and marry the girl he had always loved? Long out of print, Thy Brother's Wife is a classic tale by one of America's most loved storytellers. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: The murder of the Sell family in 1886 near Erie, Kansas, has been described as one of the most mysterious unsolved crimes in the state's history. The controversial conviction of sixteen year old Willie Sell for the murders, the only family survivor, adds to the tragedy. Throw in some state politics, a suspicious disappearing relative, a prosecuting attorney that changes his mind, and a number of other mysteries tied to the crime makes for interesting factual reading.
Book Synopsis Heroine of Rescue by : Joseph Friedenson
Download or read book Heroine of Rescue written by Joseph Friedenson and published by Artscroll. This book was released on 1984 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of Sternbuch (1905-1971), who was born and raised in Antwerp as the daughter of Rabbi Mordechai Rottenberg, Chief Rabbi of the Orthodox community. Following her marriage to Rabbi Yitzchok Sternbuch, they went to live in St. Gallen, Switzerland. From 1938 their home was open to Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Recha also set up a rescue network to help Jews cross the border illegally and then go on to other countries. Notes that Saly Mayer, head of the Schweizerischer Israelitischer Gemeindebund, actually hindered the rescue work. In spring 1939, Recha was arrested and imprisoned briefly for aiding illegal immigrants. In 1941 all charges were dropped, since she also helped Jews obtain visas to other countries, which was in the interest of the Swiss officials. The Sternbuchs then began to send food and medical supplies to Jews in the Polish ghettos and to Jewish refugees in Shanghai, setting up the Hilfsverein für Jüdische Flüchtlinge in Shanghai (HIJEFS). After the war, through this organization, they helped survivors in DP camps, saved Jewish children who had been hidden in non-Jewish homes, and provided aid for many rabbis and Jewish scholars who had survived.

Book Synopsis Your God is Too Glorious by : Chad Bird
Download or read book Your God is Too Glorious written by Chad Bird and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.
