Book excerpt: In this dissertation, the spectroscopic properties of thulium doped tellurite and thulium doped germanate glass are characterized. Absorption and emission spectra, lifetime, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermo-gravimetric analysis are utilized to characterize the thulium doped tellurite bulk glass samples. Judd-Oflet theory, Fuchtbauer-ladenburg theory, Kushida's model, Burshtein's hopping model, Miyakawa's non-resonant energy transfer model are employed in ab-initio calculation of cross relaxation energy transfer. The fundamental mechanism of cross relaxation energy transfer is examined through ab-initio calculation and self-calibrating spectroscopy. Thulium doped tellurite glass microspheres are fabricated by spin casting technique. Single mode 2-mm laser is demonstrated from tellurite microsphere with high thulium doping concentration. General laser condition for self-terminating transition is discussed and concluded. Demonstration of 1.5-mm laser is achieved from a self-terminating transition of thulium doped in tellurite microsphere through a cooperative lasing technique. Highly efficient 1.9 micron fiber laser is demonstrated in thulium doped germanate fiber laser. The slope efficiency of the fiber laser is 58%, which indicates a quantum efficiency of 1.79. Single frequency laser operation at 1.9 micron has been successfully accomplished. A fiber based Fabry-Perot interferometer is utilized as a scanning filter to examine the single frequency operation. 4 W laser output has been achieved from a 40 cm long Tm-doped germanate double cladding fiber laser.

Book excerpt: Microtechnology has changed our world since the last century, when silicon microelectronics revolutionized sensor, control and communication areas, with applications extending from domotics to automotive, and from security to biomedicine. The present century, however, is also seeing an accelerating pace of innovation in glassy materials; as an example, glass-ceramics, which successfully combine the properties of an amorphous matrix with those of micro- or nano-crystals, offer a very high flexibility of design to chemists, physicists and engineers, who can conceive and implement advanced microdevices. In a very similar way, the synthesis of glassy polymers in a very wide range of chemical structures offers unprecedented potential of applications. The contemporary availability of microfabrication technologies, such as direct laser writing or 3D printing, which add to the most common processes (deposition, lithography and etching), facilitates the development of novel or advanced microdevices based on glassy materials. Biochemical and biomedical sensors, especially with the lab-on-a-chip target, are one of the most evident proofs of the success of this material platform. Other applications have also emerged in environment, food, and chemical industries. The present Special Issue of Micromachines aims at reviewing the current state-of-the-art and presenting perspectives of further development. Contributions related to the technologies, glassy materials, design and fabrication processes, characterization, and, eventually, applications are welcome.

Book excerpt: "The high and rapidly increasing demand for more telecommunication capacity and internet services drives the evolution of fiber optic communication. The third telecom window, which utilizes wavelengths around 1.5 [mu]m and is widely utilized nowadays, can not meet this demand in future. Researchers are trying to develop technologies in new wavelength regions. Longer wavelength region has attracted intense interests for its prospective application. On the other hand, the fact that the wavelength region from 1.7 [mu]m to 2 [mu]m covers the absorption bands of water and greenhouse gas facilitates the applications in such area as sensing, spectroscopy and coherent LIDAR. In this thesis, we demonstrate a multi-wavelength thulium doped fiber laser around 1.9 [mu]m and a bismuth doped fiber laser around 1.7 [mu]m.The 1.9 [mu]m multi-wavelength laser uses a combination of a 25 cm Tm^(3+)-doped silica fiber along with stimulated Brillouin scattering and four wave mixing. More than 100 lines can be observed in the optical spectrum. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest number of lasing wavelengths emitting from a Brillouin thulium fiber laser. The peak wavelengths drift less than 0.02 nm and peak powers fluctuate less than 3.4 dB in 20 minutes. The 1.7 [mu]m CW laser uses a 15 m bismuth doped germanosilicate fiber as active fiber. Both linear cavity and ring cavity are tried to build laser. With linear cavity, a laser at 1726 nm has been achieved. The laser has maximum output power of 55 [mu]W with slope efficiency of 5.76*10^(-5) W/W. With ring cavity, the laser has maximum output power of 300 [mu]W with slope efficiency of 3.55*10^(-4) W/W. The laser has single-wavelength operation at 1735 nm or dual-wavelength operation at 1726 nm and 1735 nm." --

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been significant interest in the "eye-safer" 2-[micrometer] wavelength range for applications varying from laser-driven particle acceleration to remote sensing to mid-infrared spectroscopy. Trivalent thulium has shown promise as a viable dopant to fulfill several requirements of these applications through its wide gain bandwidth, from ~1.8 to 2.1 [micrometers], and its ability to efficiently power scale. By further broadening the output spectrum of an ultrafast Tm-doped fiber source through supercontinuum generation (SCG), an instantaneously broadband mid-IR spectrum can be produced, which is particularly useful for mid-IR spectroscopy. In this dissertation, I demonstrate thulium's ability to generate ultrafast pulses in a mode-locked all-fiber laser, the figure-eight laser (F8L). Through the various operating regimes of the F8L, pulse widths ranging from 1.5 ps to 20 ns could be generated. Amplification of the F8L output allowed for temporal pulse compression to less than 400 fs with ~100 kW of peak power. In addition to the F8L, a subharmonic optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was explored as a possible 2-[micrometer] oscillator. The sync-pumped doubly-resonant OPO converted pulses from a 1-[micrometer] mode-locked fiber laser to 2 [micrometers], utilizing a PPLN crystal as the nonlinear gain medium. The subharmonic OPO generated less than 50-fs pulses, shorter than any reported Tm-doped oscillator to date. To utilize these sources for mid-IR spectroscopy, the spectral bandwidth can be significantly broadened through SCG. With a tapered chalcogenide fiber pumped by a Tm-doped fiber laser, the output spectrum was broadened from ~227 nm centered at 2.04 [micrometers] to span from 1 to 3.7 [micrometers].

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The steady-state gain distribution in cladding pumped thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) is analytically and numerically solved based on the rate equations including loss coefficients and cross relaxation effect. With the gain curve, a problem, which is named optical feedback inhibition (OFI) and always occurs in tandem TDFL-Ho:YAG laser system, is analyzed quantitatively. The actual characteristics of output spectra and power basically prove the conclusion of theoretical analysis. Then a simple mirror-deflected L-shaped cavity is employed to restrain the external feedback and simplify the structure of fiber-bulk Ho:YAG laser. Finally, 25 W of 2097-nm laser power and 51.2% of optical-to-optical conversion efficiency are obtained, and the beam quality factor is less than 1.43 obtained by knife-edge method.
