Book excerpt: In this dissertation, an integrated model of an unslotted spread spectrum multiple access (SSMA) packet radio network is developed. The model combines a detailed model of the radio channel, accounting for the effect of multi-user interference, with a network model that traces the evolution of the number of interfering transmissions and accounts for the half-duplex nature of the radios. A new analysis of the performance of a Viterbi decoder in a packet radio environment allows the model to be used for a system with convolutional Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding. The synchronization process is also analyzed and incorporated into the integrated model. The model makes use of several approximations for tractability. A discrete event simulation is used to validate these approximations. The integrated model leads to numerical results which show the throughput and the probability of success for a packet as a function of the channel level and network level parameters. Specifically, for the radio channel, these parameter include the modulation format, the received signal power, the spread spectrum bandwidth expansion, and the presence or absence of FEC coding. Also, the throughput is found as a function of the synchronization parameters, such as the detection thresholds and correlation times, for several different synchronization circuits and preamble structures. At the network level, the parameters are the traffic rate and the network size. The random access protocols considered include unslotted ALOHA and channel load sensing, which is an extension of carrier sensing to an SSMA network. (jhd).

The topology is a single-hop fully connected network with identical users. The network model allows the performance of the radio links to be specified in detail. A model of a BPSK Direct Sequence (DS) CDMA radio channel with convolutional Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding is used. A refinement of the network model takes into account the restriction that half-duplex radios cannot transmit and receive simultaneously. Single hop throughput and probability of successful first transmission are derived. The effects on throughput and probability of successful first transmission are derived. The effects on throughput of the received signal strength Eb/No, the number of chips per bit N and the number of users M are shown. A channel load sense access protocol is introduced in which radios are blocked from transmitting when the channel is heavily loaded. The increase in throughput due to this protocol is shown for zero and for non-zero propagation delay. (rh).

Book excerpt: In this paper we describe throughput/delay performance results for Spread Spectrum Communication Networks. In previous work we have used a strong independence assumption and an iterative algorithm to generate approximate performance models for (non-spread) multiple access broadcast networks using random access protocols. The model incorporates the effect of buffering and finite populations. In this paper we extend these results to Spread Spectrum Networks capable of Code Division Multiple Access and study the effect of the multi-user threshold and capture. Originator-supplied keywords include: Packet Radio; Spread Spectrum Networks; Multihop Networks, Throughput/Delay Performance; Code Division Multiple Access; and Slotted Aloha.

Book excerpt: With the rapidly increasing penetration of laptop computers and mobile phones, which are primarily used by mobile users to access Internet s- vices like e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) access, support of Internet services in a mobile environment is an emerging requirement. Wireless n- works have been used for communication among fully distributed users in a multimedia environment that has the needs to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic with excellent reliability and service quality. To satisfy the huge wireless multimedia service demand and improve the system performance, efficient channel access methods and analytical methods must be provided. In this way very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behavior of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, can be constructed. Most of these system models are discrete-time queueing systems. Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.

Book excerpt: Primary and secondary multiple-access interference processes are characterized for multi-hop packet radio networks, in which users are assumed to be Poisson-distributed in the plane and to use frequency hopped spread-spectrum signaling with a receiver-oriented assignment of frequency-hopping patterns. The throughput per node and the average forward progress are then evaluated for frequency-hopped multi-hop networks that employ (i) random forward routing with fixed transmission radius (RFR) and(ii) most forward progress routing with fixed transmission radius (MFR). The optimal average number of neighbors and transmission radius are derived for these cases when Reed-Solomon forward-error-control coding with minimum distance decoding or binary convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding is employed.

Book excerpt: Multiple access interference is characterized for cellular mobile networks, in which users are assumed to be Poisson-distributed in the plane and employ frequency-hopped spread-spectrum signaling with transmitter-oriented assignment of frequency-hopping patterns. Exact expressions for the bit error probabilities are derived for binary coherently demodulated systems without coding. Approximations for the packet error probability are derived for coherent and noncoherent systems and these approximations are applied when forward-error-control coding is employed. In all cases, the effects of varying interference power are accurately taken into account according to some propagation law. Numerical results are given in terms of bit error probability for the exact case and throughput for the approximate analyses. Comparisons are made with previously derived bounds and it is shown that these tend to be very pessimistic. Keywords: Communications network; Multiple access; Frequency hopping; Spread spectrum; Error control coding. (jhd).

The first chapter considers th optimal packet size for NPCSMA scheme in mobile fading channels. Here, modified expression for the channel throughput of nonpersistent carrier sense multiple access protocol (NPCSMA) in slow Nakagami fading channel is given. The optimal packet size and the acknowledgement size are obtained such that a maximum number of users can share the channel while maintaining reliable values for both the probability of packet and acknowledgement error. Meanwhile the useful throughput is also insured to be at maximum value. The second chapter considers packet radio performance over fast fading channels. Here, expressions for the throughput and packet delay of nonpersistent carrier sense multiple access (NPCSMA) protocol in fast fading environment are derived. Upper and lower bounds are obtained for a case where the fading phenomena is neither slow or fast. An alternative technique is used to approximately predict the performance for the cases that exist between these bounds. Both Nakagami fading and noncoherent reception are assumed.

Book excerpt: The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users' signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA.

Book excerpt: In response to a request from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the committee studied a range of issues to help identify what strategies the Department of Defense might follow to meet its need for flexible, rapidly deployable communications systems. Taking into account the military's particular requirements for security, interoperability, and other capabilities as well as the extent to which commercial technology development can be expected to support these and related needs, the book recommends systems and component research as well as organizational changes to help the DOD field state-of-the-art, cost-effective untethered communications systems. In addition to advising DARPA on where its investment in information technology for mobile wireless communications systems can have the greatest impact, the book explores the evolution of wireless technology, the often fruitful synergy between commercial and military research and development efforts, and the technical challenges still to be overcome in making the dream of "anytime, anywhere" communications a reality.
