It is a heart-wrenching account of a womans road through her own personal anguish and back, one that could be written only by the person who experienced it. It describes how she lived through the death of her infant daughter, a fire that totally destroyed her home and its contents, the suicide of her 21-year-old son, the killing of her 25-year-old son, the subsequent trauma, called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that followed, and her return to stability. Such a listing doesnt capture Chriss journey. Though not a professional writer, she has allowed us to enter her world, with all of its twists and turns, moments of sadness and despair, and finally, the peace that comes from emerging on the other side. She has a guileless honesty that wont let you go. No doubt thousands of people have shared some of Chriss experiences few, if any, to her degreebut fewer still have her ability to capture that experience in a way that makes her experiences their own. Kevin Burne, Ph.D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Friday the Thirteenth of October 1995, a sexual predator prowled the quiet city streets of Abbotsford, British Columbia. Two teenage girls were viciously attacked with a baseball bat. Tanya Smith died at the hands of their attacker, and Misty Cockerill only just survived, as she was driven by incredible fighting instinct and the will to live. Now the only living eyewitness, Misty's life would remain in imminent danger. Through the Valley of the Shadow, by Inspector Rod Gehl, is the true story of the manhunt for the Abbotsford Killer. As police investigated this crime, the old adage 'fact is stranger than fiction' proved true many times over. For seven months Inspector Gehl and members of the Homicide Task Force found themselves drawn into a bizarre game of cat and mouse as the Abbotsford Killer made taunting phone calls, sent messages bragging about his actions, and threatened to kill again. Would they catch the killer before he struck again? For the police, it was like chasing a shadow; for the communities involved, the Abbotsford Killer was truly the shadow of death.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Boyd Award for Literary Excellence in Military Fiction In the Valley of the Shadow, they wrote their names in blood. From a daring Confederate raid that nearly seized Washington, D.C., to a stunning reversal on the bloody fields of Cedar Creek, the summer and autumn of 1864 witnessed some of the fiercest fighting of our Civil War—in mighty battles now all but forgotten. The desperate struggle for mastery of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, breadbasket of the Confederacy and the South's key invasion route into the North, pitted a remarkable cast of heroes in blue and gray against each other: runty, rough-hewn Phillip Sheridan, a Union general with an uncanny gift for inspiring soldiers, and Jubal Early, his Confederate counterpart, stubborn, raw-mouthed and deadly; the dashing Yankee boy-general, George Armstrong Custer, and the brilliant, courageous John Brown Gordon, a charismatic Georgian who lived one of the era's greatest love stories. From hungry, hard-bitten Rebel privates to a pair of Union officers destined to become presidents, from a neglected hero who saved our nation's capital and went on to write one of his century's greatest novels, to doomed Confederate leaders of incomparable valor, Ralph Peters brings to life yesteryear's giants and their breathtaking battles with the same authenticity, skill and insight he offered readers in his prize-winning Civil War bestsellers, Cain at Gettysburg and Hell or Richmond. Sharp as a bayonet and piercing as a bullet, Valley of the Shadow is a great novel of our grandest, most-tragic war. Book excerpt: Nearing his final days, a beloved Unitarian minister meditates on life, love, and death: “The goal is to live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for.” On a February day in 2008, Forrest Church sent a letter to the members of his congregation, informing them that he had terminal cancer; his life would now be measured in months, not years. He went on to promise that he would sum up his thoughts on the topics that had been so pervasive in his work—love and death—in a final book. Church has been justly celebrated as a writer of American history, but his works of spiritual guidance have been especially valued for their insight and inspiration. As a minister, Church defined religion as "our human response to the dual reality of being alive and having to die." The goal of life, he tells us "is to live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for." Love & Death is imbued with ideas and exemplars for achieving that goal, and the stories he offers—all drawn from his own experiences and from the lives of his friends, family, and parishioners—are both engrossing and enlightening. Forrest Church's final work may be his most lasting gift to his readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospital intensive care units have changed when and how we die--and not always for the better. The ICU is a new world, one in which once-fatal diseases can be cured and medical treatments greatly enhance our chances of full recovery. But, paradoxically, these places of physical healing can exact a terrible toll, and by focusing on technology rather than humanity, they too often rob the dying of their dignity. By some accounts, the expensive medical treatments provided in ICUs also threaten to bankrupt the nation. In an attempt to give patients a voice in the ICU when they might not otherwise have one, the living will was introduced in 1969, in response to several notorious cases. These documents were meant to keep physicians from ignoring patients' and families' wishes in stressful situations. Unfortunately, despite their aspirations, living wills contain static statements about hypothetical preferences that rarely apply in practice. And they created a process that isn't faithful to who we are as human beings. Further confusing difficult and painful situations, living wills leave patients with the impression that actual communication with their physicians has taken place, when in fact their deepest desires and values remain unaddressed. In this provocative and empathetic book, medical researcher and ICU physician Samuel Morris Brown uses stories from his clinical practice to outline a new way of thinking about life-threatening illness. Brown's approach acknowledges the conflicting emotions we have when talking about the possibility of death and proposes strategies by which patients, their families, and medical practitioners can better address human needs before, during, and after serious illness. Arguing that any solution to the problems of the inhumanity of intensive care must take advantage of new research on the ways human beings process information and make choices, Brown imagines a truly humane ICU. His manifesto for reform advocates wholeness and healing for people facing life-threatening illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elite and highly trained, the 3d Force Recon's eight-man teams were assigned to obtain vital information about NVA operations. Alone, the men of these small teams were sent behind enemy lines, where they all knew that a single mistake could cost everyone their lives. United States Navy Hospital Corpsman Bruce Norton was the only navy corpsman to act as a Marine Force Recon Team Leader. In Force Recon Diary, 1969 Doc Norton chronicles his life, mission by mission, with the 3d Force Recon in the DMZ and the A Shau Valley. He describes the tense patrols, the supreme courage, the sacrifices—in ambushes and hot landing zones—that made this courageous company one of only two Marine units during the entire Vietnam War to receive the United States Army's Valorous Unit Citation.
