Book excerpt: The book begins with the turmoil plaguing her family and relations in the Ukraine before and post-WWI, progressing into the chaos of four years of the Russian Civil War. Maria is born in a small village with the country under communist control. As a young girl, she suffered hunger and starvation in the Holodomor in 1933 in the Ukraine, a made famine authorised by Stalin. This was followed by the terror purges carried out by the NKVD. After a short period of peace came the German invasion and occupation. She was selected by the Germans for slave labour, where she was sent to Germany to work in an ammunition factory. She escaped to Magdeburg and lived in German society under an assumed name. Here she experience the horror of allied bombing and consequent firestorm. With the end of WWII, she was liberated by the Americans who handed her over to the Soviets. From the Eastern block, she escaped back to the West to meet up with her future husband. In the small German town of Goslar, she married, and in time, she had a son. For four years, the family lived in Germany as displaced people with the constant fear of being repatriated to the USSR. Eventually, New Zealand opened its door, and a month-long voyage by sea eventually landed the family in a strange land halfway around the world. Life in New Zealand presented its own problems to foreigners who had little to no understanding of the English language. But by hard work and much sacrifice, she achieved her goal of owning a house and a growing family.

Book excerpt: Containing a body of work that spans more than three decades, Pass Thru Fire is a stunning collection of the lyrics of an American original. Through his many incarnations-from proto punk to glam rocker to elder statesman of the avant garde-Lou Reed's work has maintained an undeniable vividness and raw beauty, fueled by precise character studies and rendered with an admirable shot of moral ambiguity. Beginning with his formative days in the Velvet Underground and continuing through his remarkable solo career-albums like Transformer, Berlin, New York, Magic and Loss, and Ecstasy-Pass Thru Fire is crucial to an appreciation of Lou Reed, not only as a consummate underground musician, but as one of the truly significant poets of our time.

Book Synopsis Walk Through Fire by : Sheila Johnson
Download or read book Walk Through Fire written by Sheila Johnson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cofounder of BET and first African American woman billionaire shares her deeply personal, “highly readable” (Kirkus Reviews) journey through love and loss, tragedy and triumph—an inspiring story of overcoming toxic influences, discovering her true self, and at last finding happiness in her work and life. From humble beginnings as a schoolgirl and a young violinist in Maywood, Illinois, Sheila Johnson rose to become one of the most accomplished businesswomen in America. A cofounder of Black Entertainment Television, she became an entrepreneur and philanthropist at the highest levels. But that success came at a painful personal cost. Sheila grew up in a middle-class family that encouraged her love of the arts and music. But her idyllic childhood ended at age sixteen when her beloved father announced that he was leaving for another woman, an act that shattered her mother and destroyed Sheila’s trust. She vowed she’d never be in her mother’s position—dependent on a man for her sense of self-worth and for financial security. Yet when she was barely out of her teens, Sheila married a man who would take her right down that same unfortunate path. Filled with sharply drawn, emotionally powerful senses, Walk Through Fire traces the hardships Sheila faced in her marriage and her professional life. Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning. In the third act of her life, Sheila Johnson has not only made her mark as the founder of Salamander Hotels & Resorts and the only Black female coowner of three professional sports teams, she has also, finally, found true love. Walk Through Fire is a uniquely American success story. And it is the deeply personal portrait of one woman who, despite heartache and obstacles, finally found herself and her place in the world.
