Book excerpt: New calculations of the narrow-width and threshold resonances were completed which support the appearance of the threshold resonances in the e - Ps system. The threshold resonances were observed lining up at the first, second, and third two-body thresholds, a trend that is assumed to continue at even higher energies. Calculations were carried out for both the 1S and 3S states. After successfully making calculations of the e - Ps system resonant states, calculations were also carried out for the electron-Hydrogen (e- ) 1S and 3S resonances. The calculations for the e - H system were carried out for the threshold resonances emerging from the 1st threshold. Additionally, we propose an explanation for the emergence of the threshold resonances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although introduced30 years ago, the J-matrix method has witnessed a resurgence of interest in the last few years. In fact, the interest never ceased, as some authors have found in this method an effective way of handling the continuous spectrum of scattering operators, in addition to other operators. The motivation behind the introduction of the J-matrix method will be presented in brief. The introduction of fast computing machines enabled theorists to perform cal- lations, although approximate, in a conveniently short period of time. This made it possible to study varied scenarios and models, and the effects that different possible parameters have on the ?nal results of such calculations. The ?rst area of research that bene?ted from this opportunity was the structural calculation of atomic and nuclear systems. The Hamiltonian element of the system was set up as a matrix in a convenient, ?nite, bound-state-like basis. A matrix of larger size resulted in a better con?guration interaction matrix that was subsequently diagonalized. The discrete energy eigenvalues thus obtained approximated the spectrum of the system, while the eigenfunctions approximated the wave function of the resulting discrete state. Structural theorists were delighted because they were able to obtain very accurate values for the lowest energy states of interest.

An example of this is the Electron-Positronium (e-Ps) system. It's extensively researched and verified both theoretically and experimentally. Highly verifiable results make it an ideal candidate for comparing known results with those of a new method for solving three body resonances.

Book excerpt: The Third US/Mexico Symposium on Atomic and Molecular Physics brought together forty-five leading investigators in many fields. Both theory and experiment were well represented. The papers in this volume are based on the participants' invited talks at the symposium and represent an important collection reviewing the most up-to-date work in the different fields. The diversity of research areas represented, coupled to a common local point, revealed different perspectives on such questions as: How do particles depend on one another? Correlation provides a good starting point, but are there other useful conceptual approaches which will yield a new view of the phenomena and a more complete understanding? The contributions in this volume provide different perspectives and bring together a collection of papers which serve as a basis for further progress in this field.

Although their effect is often lost due to averaging at room temperatures or higher, they can become dominant features at low or ultralow temperatures, where only a few partial waves contribute to the scattering process. Our ability to form and manipulate ultracold molecules provides the seed to study in a precise and controlled fashion the role of single partial waves, and state-to-state processes in chemical systems. We explore resonances occurring due to the existence of a quasi-bound state in the entrance channel of a scattering system and explain the energy scaling due to these near threshold resonances (NTR) based on the properties of the Jost functions. We also investigate the threshold resonance effects in the Efimov systems which have been studied in a variety of context, such as three-body Coulomb systems and nuclear three-body systems. Numerical schemes based on Milne's phase-amplitude approach are formulated to analyze NTR effects. We present a simple and practical approach to solve the long-standing problem of finding the non-oscillatory solution to Milne's equation. Our numerical approach also gives an integral representation of scattering phase shift and allows us to compute ultra-narrow shape resonances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents a decisive breakthrough in our understanding of the physics of universal quantum-mechanical three-body systems. The Efimov scenario is a prime example of how fundamental few-body physics features universally across seemingly disparate fields of modern quantum physics. Initially postulated for nuclear physics more than 40 years ago, the Efimov effect has now become a new research paradigm not only in ultracold atomic gases but also in molecular, biological and condensed matter systems. Despite a lot of effort since its first observations, the scaling behavior, which is a hallmark property and often referred to as the “holy grail” of Efimov physics, remained hidden until recently. In this work, the author demonstrates this behavior for the first time for a heteronuclear mixture of ultracold Li and Cs atoms, and pioneers the experimental understanding of microscopic, non-universal properties in such systems. Based on the application of Born-Oppenheimer approximation, well known from molecular physics textbooks, an exceptionally clear and intuitive picture of heteronuclear Efimov physics is revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the different few-body techniques developed in nuclear physics and their applications to explore the structural properties of neutron-rich unstable nuclei, the so-called halo nuclei. Formal theory of two- and three-body scattering are discussed in a compact and abridged form to initiate the beginners who want to investigate the problems of halo nuclei within the framework of three-body models. Readers gain in-depth knowledge about the methods involved to solve the two- and three-body scattering problem and a special focus is put on the Faddeev approach. In this sense, the authors address both the graduate students and senior researchers. Subsequently, a detailed analysis of the Efimov effect in three-body systems is presented and the search for the effect in atomic nuclei, both Borromean and non-Borromean is addressed. The book also presents a detailed account of how to analyze, within the framework of a 3-body approach and using realistic short range forces, the structural properties of halo nuclei. Finally, the authors discuss the recent progress in effective field theory by setting up the integral equations for 3-body scattering and applying it to study low energy scattering of neutrons off halo nuclear targets.
