Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to numerical methods for solving sparse linear algebra systems of very large dimension which arise in the implementation of the mesh approximations of the partial differential equations. Incomplete factorization is the basis of the wide class of preconditioning interative processes with acceleration by conjugate gradients or the Chebyshev technique. Different kinds of explicit and implicit algorithms are considered. Theoretical grounds of correctness and estimates of the convergence velocity of iterations are presented. Together with the results of experimental investigations for the typical examples, this book is the first on systematic studying of the incomplete factorization methods.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: When certain conditions are imposed on the sparsity pattern of the preconditioning matrix, incomplete Cholesky (IC) factorization is identical to IMGS. Therefore, a sufficient condition on the sparsity pattern for a stable IC factorization can be derived. Based on this condition, three algorithms for modifying a sparsity pattern for which IC may not succeed have been designed. These methods differ from previously proposed methods to guarantee the existence and improve the stability of the IC factorization since they do not require numerical information. Numerical experiments illustrating the capabilities of the preconditioners are also presented."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns modern methods in scientific computing and linear algebra, relevant to image and signal processing. For these applications, it is important to consider ingredients such as: (1) sophisticated mathematical models of the problems, including a priori knowledge, (2) rigorous mathematical theories to understand the difficulties of solving problems which are ill-posed, and (3) fast algorithms for either real-time or data-massive computations. Such are the topics brought into focus by these proceedings of the Workshop on Scientific Computing (held in Hong Kong on March 10-12, 1997, the sixth in such series of Workshops held in Hong Kong since 1990), where the major themes were on numerical linear algebra, signal processing, and image processing.

In just over 100 pages, it shows, via algorithms in pseudocode, in MATLAB, and with several examples, how one can choose an appropriate Newton-type method for a given problem, diagnose problems, and write an efficient solver or apply one written by others. It contains trouble-shooting guides to the major algorithms, their most common failure modes, and the likely causes of failure. It also includes many worked-out examples (available on the SIAM website) in pseudocode and a collection of MATLAB codes, allowing readers to experiment with the algorithms easily and implement them in other languages.

This open access monograph focuses on factorization algorithms for solving such systems. It presents classical techniques for complete factorizations that are used in sparse direct methods and discusses the computation of approximate direct and inverse factorizations that are key to constructing general-purpose algebraic preconditioners for iterative solvers. A unified framework is used that emphasizes the underlying sparsity structures and highlights the importance of understanding sparse direct methods when developing algebraic preconditioners. Theoretical results are complemented by sparse matrix algorithm outlines. This monograph is aimed at students of applied mathematics and scientific computing, as well as computational scientists and software developers who are interested in understanding the theory and algorithms needed to tackle sparse systems. It is assumed that the reader has completed a basic course in linear algebra and numerical mathematics.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we present a class of iterative descent methods for solving large, sparse, nonsymmetric systems of linear equations whose coefficient matrices have positive-definite symmetric parts. Such problems commonly arise from the discretization of non-self-adjoint elliptic partial differential equations. The methods we consider are modelled after the conjugate gradient method. They require no estimation of parameters and their rate of convergence appears to depend on the spectrum of A rather than ATA. Their convergence can also be accelerated by preconditioning techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unifying theoretical framework for iterative solvers for linear systems. The focus is on parameter-free methods, i. e. methods that can be applied without a priori knowledge of inner properties of the systems. Despite the generality of the approach convergence estimates and geometrical properties can be derived. State-of-the-art solvers are surveyed and classified. Many new relations between these methods are furnished leading to a deeper insight. Existing gaps in the theory are pointed out and some visions for the design of more efficient and robust solvers are given. A valuation of established methods based on the theoretical results and on numerical tests is given. Recipes for the application of particular techniques are derived. The criteria are efficiency, robustness and the possibility of parallelization. This book has a triple aim: to simplify the analysis by a unified theory, to survey and valuate state-of-the-art solvers and to give an introduction to iterative solvers for non-experts in the field.

This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on special matrices and matrices which are in some sense `near’ to structured matrices, this volume covers a broad range of topics of current interest in numerical linear algebra. Exploitation of these less obvious structural properties can be of great importance in the design of efficient numerical methods, for example algorithms for matrices with low-rank block structure, matrices with decay, and structured tensor computations. Applications range from quantum chemistry to queuing theory. Structured matrices arise frequently in applications. Examples include banded and sparse matrices, Toeplitz-type matrices, and matrices with semi-separable or quasi-separable structure, as well as Hamiltonian and symplectic matrices. The associated literature is enormous, and many efficient algorithms have been developed for solving problems involving such matrices. The text arose from a C.I.M.E. course held in Cetraro (Italy) in June 2015 which aimed to present this fast growing field to young researchers, exploiting the expertise of five leading lecturers with different theoretical and application perspectives.
