Book excerpt: The inspiring and hilarious story of Patch Adams's quest to bring free health care to the world and to transform the way doctors practice medicine • Tells the story of Patch Adam's lifetime quest to transform the health care system • Released as a film from Universal Pictures, starring Robin Williams Meet Patch Adams, M.D., a social revolutionary who has devoted his career to giving away health care. Adams is the founder of the Gesundheit Institute, a home-based medical practice that has treated more than 15,000 people for free, and that is now building a full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world free of charge. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? Not for those who know and work with Patch. Whether it means putting on a red clown nose for sick children or taking a disturbed patient outside to roll down a hill with him, Adams does whatever is necessary to help heal. In his frequent lectures at medical schools and international conferences, Adams's irrepressible energy cuts through the businesslike facade of the medical industry to address the caring relationship between doctor and patient that is at the heart of true medicine. All author royalties are used to fund The Gesundheit Institute, a 40-bed free hospital in West Virginia. Adams's positive vision and plan for the future is an inspiration for those concerned with the inaccessibility of affordable, quality health care. Today's high-tech medicine has become too costly, impersonal, and grim. In his frequent lectures to colleges, churches, community groups, medical schools, and conferences, Patch shows how healing can be a loving, creative, humorous human exchange--not a business transaction.

CAVALRY CORPS HOSPITAL, CITY POINT. EARLY in the spring of 1864, General Grant took command of the Army of the Potomac, and preparations were made for breaking up the base at Brandy Station and for a vigorous campaign. In pursuance of an order from head-quarters, there was a general flight of women to Washington. When I next found my division hospital it was at Fredericksburg, Va., after the battle of the Wilderness, May 5th, 6th, and 7th. It would be in vain to attempt a description of the scenes of suffering that crowded on one another there, as our wounded were brought back from the hard fighting of the Wilderness and Spottsylvania. The entire city was turned into a hospital, and the houses were literally filled, from garret to cellar, with our patient, dying soldiers. Thence the Hospital Department was ordered to Port Royal--which was made a base during the fighting at the North Anna River -- and thence to White House Landing, on the Pamunkey. Here we remained for several weeks; the wounded were brought in from the battle of Cold Harbor, and our hospitals were established, and again filled with every conceivable form of suffering. By this time, General D. B. Birney, on whose protection and kindness I had so long relied, was transferred to another command. The old and honored Third Corps, which had so many times stood in the deadly breach, hurling back the tide of invasion that threatened to overwhelm us, was consolidated into the Third Division of the Second Corps. Many of the surgeons with whom I had worked, and other officers, who had been my friends, had left the service at the expiration of their three years' term, or fallen in the recent battles. Finding but few of my old friends remaining, I accepted an invitation...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. First Visit to Annapolis.--Stories of Starved Men.--Burial at Andersonville.--Neely's Life in the Dungeon of Castle Thunder.--Sergeant Kerker.--Captains Wilson and Shelton in the "Iron Cage," in Buncombe County, Tenn.--The Boy and the Flag. -- Gould's returning Consciousness. -- Mr. Brown in Danville Prison. In this closing period of the war, and of our labor in the hospitals, comes the darkest, saddest page of all-- too terrible to be lightly spoken, and too painful in its remembrances to be dwelt upon any longer than is needful for the connected continuance of the narrative. The inhuman, fiendish treatment of our soldiers in Southern prisons has now become a matter of history, the truthfulness of which cannot be doubted. Would that it could be! By the bedsides of dying skeletons, as they shudderingly recalled their prison life, I have written their sad stories, which often ended with: "We can never tell the half of all we have endured; it would not be credited, if we did." All of horrors that I had seen and known during these memorable years, faded into insignificance when contrasted with this heinous crime-- a systematic course of starvation to brave men made captives by the chances of war! Our first visit to Annapolis was with the object of seeing and knowing more of them; that by a recital of their condition, I might interest still more those who were devoting themselves to the preparation of hospital comforts. The little we saw of the starved men, at that time, enlisted all my sympathies. In one of the wards of the hospital at Camp Parole, a man belonging to the 5th Indiana Cavalry was reclining in a large rockingchair near the stove; his features sharpened by suffering, the eyes sunken, skin tightly drawn over the...

Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian comes a riveting history of New York's iconic public hospital that charts the turbulent rise of American medicine. Bellevue Hospital, on New York City's East Side, occupies a colorful and horrifying place in the public imagination: a den of mangled crime victims, vicious psychopaths, assorted derelicts, lunatics, and exotic-disease sufferers. In its two and a half centuries of service, there was hardly an epidemic or social catastrophe—or groundbreaking scientific advance—that did not touch Bellevue. David Oshinsky, whose last book, Polio: An American Story, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, chronicles the history of America's oldest hospital and in so doing also charts the rise of New York to the nation's preeminent city, the path of American medicine from butchery and quackery to a professional and scientific endeavor, and the growth of a civic institution. From its origins in 1738 as an almshouse and pesthouse, Bellevue today is a revered public hospital bringing first-class care to anyone in need. With its diverse, ailing, and unprotesting patient population, the hospital was a natural laboratory for the nation's first clinical research. It treated tens of thousands of Civil War soldiers, launched the first civilian ambulance corps and the first nursing school for women, pioneered medical photography and psychiatric treatment, and spurred New York City to establish the country's first official Board of Health. As medical technology advanced, "voluntary" hospitals began to seek out patients willing to pay for their care. For charity cases, it was left to Bellevue to fill the void. The latter decades of the twentieth century brought rampant crime, drug addiction, and homelessness to the nation's struggling cities—problems that called a public hospital's very survival into question. It took the AIDS crisis to cement Bellevue's enduring place as New York's ultimate safety net, the iconic hospital of last resort. Lively, page-turning, fascinating, Bellevue is essential American history.

Book excerpt: From the author of the multi-million copy bestseller The Tattooist of Auschwitz comes a new novel based on a riveting true story of love and resilience. Her beauty saved her — and condemned her. Cilka is just sixteen years old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival. When the war is over and the camp is liberated, freedom is not granted to Cilka: She is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp. But did she really have a choice? And where do the lines of morality lie for Cilka, who was send to Auschwitz when she was still a child? In Siberia, Cilka faces challenges both new and horribly familiar, including the unwanted attention of the guards. But when she meets a kind female doctor, Cilka is taken under her wing and begins to tend to the ill in the camp, struggling to care for them under brutal conditions. Confronting death and terror daily, Cilka discovers a strength she never knew she had. And when she begins to tentatively form bonds and relationships in this harsh, new reality, Cilka finds that despite everything that has happened to her, there is room in her heart for love. From child to woman, from woman to healer, Cilka's journey illuminates the resilience of the human spirit—and the will we have to survive.
