Book Synopsis The Travels of Robert Lyall, 1789–1831 by : Gwyn Campbell
Download or read book The Travels of Robert Lyall, 1789–1831 written by Gwyn Campbell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life of Robert Lyall, surgeon, botanist, voyager, British Agent to the court of Madagascar. Born the year of the French Revolution, Lyall grew up in politically radical Paisley, Scotland, before studying medicine, in Edinburgh, Manchester, and subsequently St. Petersburg, Russia. His criticism of the Tsar and Russian aristocracy led to an abrupt departure for London where Lyall became the voice of liberalism and calls for political reform, before appointed British Resident Agent in Madagascar in 1827, representing the interests of the Tory establishment that he had hitherto so roundly castigated. However, Lyall discovered that the Malagasy crown had turned against the British alliance of 1820, his scientific pursuits alienated the local elite, and his efforts to re-establish British influence antagonized the queen, Ranavalona I, who accused Lyall of sorcery and forced him and his burgeoning family to leave for Mauritius where he died an untimely death, of malaria, in 1831.

Book Synopsis David Griffiths and the Missionary "History of Madagascar" by : Gwyn Campbell
Download or read book David Griffiths and the Missionary "History of Madagascar" written by Gwyn Campbell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1838, William Ellis of the LMS published a History of Madagascar―considered a key primary source for nineteenth-century Malagasy history. Four years later, David Griffiths, longest serving member of the Madagascar Mission, published Hanes Madagascar (“History of Madagascar”) in Welsh. Campbell’s study explores the intriguing relationship between these works and their authors. It analyses the role of Griffiths; presents evidence that much of Ellis’ History derived from Griffiths’ research; and presents the first ever translation of Hanes Madagascar (with extensive annotations). This study suggests that the tensions arising from the different cultural perceptions of Welsh and English missionaries moulded the destiny of the Madagascar mission. It will hopefully inspire re-evaluation of other missions and their relationship to British imperial policy.
Book Synopsis Contest for Land in Madagascar by : Sandra Evers
Download or read book Contest for Land in Madagascar written by Sandra Evers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malagasy possess a profound religious, socio-political and economic attachment to land which connects individuals and kinship groups with the ancestors. International stakeholders value Madagascar for its biodiversity, minerals and agricultural potential, while the Malagasy state views land as the necessary platform for its economic development. This collection presents original research by established and rising scholars across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including Human Genetics, Anthropology and History. Authors focus on land as the pivotal factor underlying the economic, social and religious structures of Malagasy society and its relationship with outsiders, aiming to provide new insights into the issues underlying Madagascar’s ongoing economic and political malaise.
Book Synopsis Ancestral Encounters in Highland Madagascar by : Zoë Crossland
Download or read book Ancestral Encounters in Highland Madagascar written by Zoë Crossland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century highland Madagascar was a place inhabited by the dead as much as the living. Ghosts, ancestors and the possessed were important historical actors alongside local kings and queens, soldiers, traders and missionaries. This book considers the challenges that such actors pose for historical accounts of the past and for thinking about questions of presence and representation. How were the dead made present, and how were they recognized or not? In attending to these multifarious encounters of the nineteenth century, how might we reflect on the ways in which our own history-writing makes the dead present? To tackle these questions, Zoë Crossland tells an anthropological history of highland Madagascar from a perspective rooted in archaeology and Peircean semiotics, as well as in landscape study, oral history and textual sources.
