Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of motion sickness in a large (N = 3,618) college population was determined by means of a questionnaires. Significantly greater proportions of men than women had low susceptibility scores; significantly greater proportions of women had high susceptibility scores. Comparisons of MSQ scores were made with other self-assessments, age changes, motion experiences, familial susceptibility, use of motion sickness medication, muscular coordination, willingness to participate in motion experiments, flying experience, phobias, visual motion effects, and use of alcohol. The consistent and significant patterns of results from a variety of tests are discussed in terms of the personality characteristics that generally distinguish those highly susceptible from those nonsusceptible to motion sickness.

Book excerpt: Motion sickness susceptibility of five labyrinthine-defective (L-D) and 25 normal subjects was tested under the force environments encountered in parabolic flight (0 g and hyper-g). The L-D subjects were uniformly symptomless, while the normal subjects revealed great inter- and intra-individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness provoked by standardized head movements during: (1) the hypergravic and (2) the weightless phases of the parabolic maneuver while restrained; and (3) the weightless phase while being rotated in a chair. Four of six subjects tested under condition 1 were completely unaffected by the condition while two reacted with symptoms. Condition 2 provoked severe symptoms in five of the twelve subjects tested and moderate symptoms in one. Fifteen subjects tested under condition 3 revealed either a marked increase or decrease in susceptibility to Coriolis acceleration in weightlessness compared to terrestrial baseline measurements. Book excerpt: This book offers a survey of the state of the art in the field of motion sickness. It begins by describing the historical background and the current definition of motion sickness, then discusses the prevalence among individuals, along with the physiological and psychological concomitants of the disorder. It reviews the incidence of motion sickness in numerous provocative motion environments and discusses various personal factors that appear to influence this aspect. Various characteristics of provocative motion stimuli are also described, together with the results of studies conducted in the laboratory, on motion simulators and at sea. Laboratory tests that could potentially be used to assess an individual’s susceptibility to motion sickness and his or her ability to adapt to motion environments are presented in detail, together with the ways in which individuals might be trained to prevent motion sickness or more effectively cope with motion environments. In closing, the book reports on the cognitive-behavioral approach developed by the author (Dobie, 1963) as well as the various desensitization programs employed in military settings, and discusses the relative effectiveness of these methods in comparison to cognitive-behavioral counseling.

Book excerpt: Histamine is an important mediator of allergic diseases, but knowledge of histamine as a cause of numerous non-allergic symptoms and signs is limited. This book offers wide-ranging coverage of histamine intolerance. There is extensive background discussion of the origin of histamine, its content in food and alcoholic beverages and intolerance to red wine. Diagnosis of histamine intolerance is explained and the various symptoms of histamine intolerance are clearly described. Subsequent chapters cover the relation of histamine to a wide variety of conditions, including drug intolerance, atopic dermatitis, seasickness and osteoporosis. This book will prove of value in clinical practice by facilitating differential diagnosis, which is by no means straightforward given the multiplicity of symptoms of histamine intolerance and by assisting in the selection of therapeutic measures.

Book excerpt: Seven exemplary antimotion sickness drugs and three 'individually treated' placebos were investigated in ten men during twenty-four aerobatic maneuvers in an A1E 'Skyraider' aircraft and in performance of the Pensacola Slow Rotation Room Dial Test. The rank order of drug effectiveness and of subject susceptibility under each condition was determined and compared. Individual difference in drug effectiveness was significant at the .01 level or better and was similar under the two conditions. Susceptibility to motion sickness in the SRR was generally a good predictor of susceptibility in aerobatics in eight subjects, but in the remaining two it was grossly in error. A combination of scopolamine and d-amphetamine was by far the most effective of the drugs tested under both conditions. (Author).

This book was released on 1970 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coriolis (motion) sickness susceptibility index (CSSI) of 275 healthy male subjects was calculated from data obtained by a standardized laboratory procedure at each of five specific levels of motion sickness severity, viz, frank sickness (FS), severe malaise (M III), moderate malaise (M IIA and M IIB), and mild malaise (M I). The stressor value (E factor) of a single standardized head movement associated with each rotational rate of the test chair was adjusted to yield an equivalent CSSI score independent of the endpoint selected. Close agreement among the CSSI scores obtained at each endpoint was found in intercorrelations, test-retest reliability coefficients (N = 30), and frequency distributions that reflected the orderliness and stability in the appearance, ramification, and intensification of the acute symptomatology evoked in progressing from M I to FS. The endpoint M IIA appeared, however, to yield the best balance between subject acceptability and test confidence, and was used without exception to calibrate the motion sickness susceptibility of 250 additional subjects. This book was released on 1969 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A standard method developed for quantifying Coriolis (motion) sickness susceptibility was evaluated in 250 normal and three labyrinthine-defective subjects. The procedure required the subject to execute standard head movements (plus or minus 90 degrees in the frontal and sagittal planes) while seated in a chair device that was rotated at one of several constant velocities. The proper test velocity was predicted in the majority of cases with the Motion Experience Questionnaire. Three of the normal and all of the labyrinthine-defective subjects were found to be unsusceptible to these test conditions. Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index, CSSI, was determined for each subject by multiplying the appropriate E factor, the average stress effect of each head movement for the rpm used in the test, by the number of head movements required to provoke severe malaise (M III). The resultant CSSI values for the 250 subjects ranged from 0.4 to 100, but the distribution was markedly rigt skewed. The procedure yielded a high test-retest reliability (p = .89) in terms of CSSI scores and pattern of symptomatology. In reaching the Malaise III level, the nausea syndrome was manifested in most cases, but a significant percentage (9.6%) of the subjects remained free of any epigastric disturbance or nausea. Book excerpt: Twenty-four healthy men, 22 to 25 years of age, were exposed to stressful accelerations in a rotating room until acute mild motion sickness was elicited. Thirteen subjects in one group were exposed first with eyes open and later with eyes covered; the verse order was used with the remaining eleven in the other group. The stressful accelerations were generated by requiring the subject to execute 120 standardized head movements at each 1-rpm increase in angular velocity until the desired endpoint was reached. This endpoint was 12 units on a scale where a score of 15 points represented the highest level of mild motion sickness and a score of 16, the lowest level of frank motion sickness. In the 48 experimental trials the average was 12.2 points when the endpoint was reached, and the range was 10 to 16 points. Thus, the terminal angular velocity required to achieve a given endpoint furnished a single value for comparing susceptibility between and among subjects; the range was 4 to 14 rpm. When susceptibility to motion sickness with eyes open and covered is compared, 19 subjects were more susceptible with eyes open, three with eyes covered, and in the reamining two susceptibility was the same. Among subjects manifesting greater susceptibility with eyes open than covered the group differences were small, indicating little or no adaptation effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New diagnostic criteria are presented for grading the severity of acute motion sickness. They are more suited to clinical application as empirical evaluations than for precise measurement of physiological functions. The new criteria differ from the old in two important respects: (1) 'moderate malaise, ' previously defined on an exclusion basis, has been divided into two categories and precisely defined, and (2) numerical scoring is optional. By holding fast to the definition of endpoints in the 'old' criteria with proven reliability and validity, the change does not seriously affect the findings in experiments where the old criteria were used.
