Book excerpt: High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the chiral perturbation theory approach is used at the next-to-next-to-leading order with all relevant NN and 3N contributions taken into account. The generated dynamics is then applied to calculate cross-section values by rigorous solution of the 3N Faddeev equations. The comparison of the calculated cross sections with the experimental data shows a clear preference for the predictions in which the 3NF's are included. The majority of the experimental data points is well reproduced by the theoretical predictions. The remaining discrepancies are investigated by inspecting cross sections integrated over certain kinematical variables. The procedure of global comparisons leads to establishing regularities in disagreements between the experimental data and the theoretically predicted values of the cross sections. They indicate deficiencies still present in the assumed models of the 3N system dynamics.

This is because the year 2007 corresponds to the 50 year anniversary of the three-nucleon force model based on the two-pion-exchange mechanism proposed by Fujita Miyazawa. Achievements of three-nucleon force studies, both in theory and in experiment, during this half century are presented and future perspectives for three-nucleon force studies pointing towards a new era are explored.

Book excerpt: The neutron-neutron and neutron-proton [sup 1]S[sub 0] scattering lengths a[sub nn] and a[sub np], respectively, were determined simultaneously from the neutron-deuteron breakup reaction. Their comparison with the recommended values obtained from two body reactions gives a measure of the importance of three-nucleon force effects in the three-nucleon continuum. In order to check on the result obtained for a[sub nn] from the two-body [pi][sup [minus]]-d capture reaction, a new measurement was performed at LANL. Preliminary results of the three experiments are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is apparent from the history of science, that few-body problems have an interdis ciplinary character. Newton, after solving the two-body problem so brilliantly, tried his hand at the Sun-Earth-Moon system. Here he failed in two respects: neither was he able to compute the motion of the moon accurately, nor did he understand the reason for that. It took a long time to understand the fundamental importance of Newton's failure, and only Poincare realised what was the fundamental difficulty in Newtons programme. Nowadays, the term deterministic chaos is associated with this problem. The deep insights of Poincare were neglected by the founding fathers of Quantum Physics. Thus history was repeated by Bohr and his students. After quantising the hydrogen atom, they soon found that the textbook case of a three-body problem in atomic physics, the 3He-atom, did not yield to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation methods. Only these days do people realise what precisely were the difficulties connected to this semi classical way of treating quantum systems. Our field, as we know it today, began in principle in the early 1950's, when Watson sketched the outlines of three-body scattering theory. Mathematical rigour was achieved by Faddeev and thereafter, at the beginning of the 1960's, the quantum three-body prob lem, at least as far as short-range forces were concerned, w&s tamed. In the years that followed, through the work of others, who first applied Faddeev's methods, but later added new techniques, the three-and four-body problems became fully housebroken.

Book excerpt: Few-body physics covers a rich and wide variety of phenomena, ranging from the very lowest energy scales of atomic and molecular physics to high-energy particle physics. The papers contained in the present volume provide an apercu of recent progress in the field from both the theoretical and experimental perspectives and are based on work presented at the “22nd International Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics”. This book is geared towards academics and graduate students involved in the study of systems which present few-body characteristics and those interested in the related mathematical and computational techniques.

Book excerpt: The Few Body Problem covers the proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on the Few Body Problem, held in Eugene, Oregon, USA on August 17-23, 1980. The book focuses on relativistic and particle physics, intermediate energy physics, nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics, and chemistry. The selection first offers information on nucleon-nucleon interaction in applications, including derivation of the nucleon-nucleon potential, nuclear many-body problem, and classic nuclear structure. The text also looks at three- and four-nucleon systems and graphs of three-body wave functions. The publication elaborates on K-meson experiments and non-mesonic few-nucleon phenomena. Topics include tests of invariance principles, properties of nuclei, dynamics, and hypernuclear physics. The manuscript also ponders on the Coulomb problem, atomic, molecular, and nuclear collisions, and muon capture in hydrogen isotopes. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the few body problem.
